Design a dress code or uniform for a high school.

People seem to get quite passionate about dress codes - whether or not they have a point; whether or not they are acceptable; whether or not they infringe on a child's creativity or whatever. What rules would you have?

Nothing that reveals their genitals, backside or excessive amounts of cleavage. Nothing that would be dangerous (e.g. very high heels, loose floaty sleeves in woodwork lessons, etc.) Nothing that might be reasonably expected to cause gross offence to a significant number of people (my younger brother has band t-shirts that make reference to necrophilia and paedophilia for example). In other words, just common sense stuff.

Anything that is just personal expression, that does not risk injury or is not grossly offensive, should be permitted. I think it's ridiculous when kids are sent home from school for dying their hair blue or having a mohican...

Females: mini-skirts, high heels and translucent white blouses. Bras and panties are not allowed.
Males: white sleeveless t-shirts, black dockers and Air Jordans. Underwear optional.

It would be reasonable, like Anchorage School District dress codes. Nothing too revealing, no messages on clothes or buttons that are sexually suggestive or advertise drugs/alcohol, etc. Nothing unsafe. That pretty much works for anchorage schools. Students would have a lot of room for creativity, style, colors, acceptable messages and such, as long as it is within those reasonable rules. I'd probably (unofficially) try to encourage students to wear or display messages. Not as part of the policy, but as a general principle. I'm digressing.

I can't because I don't believe in dress codes. But to have a less stupid-looking uniform than most of the schools have, I'd just have dark (doesn't show dirt as easily), rugged/tough jeans-material pants, cotton T-shirts of various bright colors, and sneakers -- for both boys and girls. No weird-looking little sailor outfits, suit-pants, pleated skirts, white ANYthing, suit-jackets, jumpers - ugly stuff like that. Just dress them as they would dress to go out in the playground. None of this krapola about "gang colors." Kids should be able to wear any colors they want.

One way around dress codes or uniforms that prevent a student from displaying a message, design, symbol or whatever, is for the student to put it on the bottom of a notebook, and hold the notebook close, in such a way that it shows as they walk around. Just thought I'd share.

Girls dress like girls, boys dress like boys. Nothing revealing for the girls, they must wear sturdy shoes, wear dresses or skirts. The boys wear their pants appropriately, not dragging between their knees. Wear shirts that are appropriate, wear sturdy shoes.

I agree with yours. I made this survey because of an activity I did in English Lit where we were talking about daft school dress codes (like girls having to wear skirts). Most of the class agreed on having a uniform, though.

I understand a desire to have everyone dress nice, clean, professional looking. Not that I agree with it, just that I understand the reasoning. Why particular colors, though? If a student is dressed respectably, why couldn't they have more colors to choose from?

I can understand making everyone dress cleanly, respectably, looking reasonably professional. I don't understand the logic behind having everyone dress exactly the same. There are so many different ways to look decent. Walk into even the most high salary business atmosphere, and you will see variety of colors, some people wearing tiny pins, etc. I think there should be some room for variety.

I would enforce dress codes,it would eliminate the discrimination against other children with less money and it would also solve the problem of girls expossing too much skin and boys wearing pants that are too long with their breifs showing. Also i believe it would be a major relief to parents that have to go buy new school clothes every summer.

Yeah, well, why not a LOT of room for variety? I mean, what's it gonna hurt if people dress all kinds of different ways? I never could understand the logic for all this sameness and conservative dress stuff. I mean, it's one thing if you're a cop or fireperson and need to stand out from others by your uniform, but that's a choice made later in life. My mom knew how I was early on and used to threaten me with "If you don't behave, I will send you to Catholic school and they'll make you wear a uniform." That would horrify me... But yeah I can see you should be as clean as possible, but what does "respectably" mean? Un-hookerlike?

I'm for a lot of variety too. I'm for reasonable school rules to keep everyone safe, nothing that would create distractions and conflicts, but other than that, it seems like letting students wear what they want isn't so bad. I can understand the reasoning behind some of the more strict dress codes, though.

I felt incredibly vulnerable wearing a skirt. It took my power away. It did not give some little girls any sense of being equal. Which is what they taught in the 60's.

I liked the uniform at my high school (Catholic, all girls). Long-sleeve white blouse, tie, Blackwatch plaid skirt, green kneesocks, loafers, and an optional sweater and blazer. I thought it was cute, though most of the girls hated it.
