When you forget someone you know's name, what do you call them?

You run into someone you know pretty well and momentarily forget their name. It's on the tip of your tongue but you cannot spit it out.

VotesAnswer
3Well, I don't call them for dinner that's for sure.
4I say, "Hey.....yoouu"
0I make up a nickname to reflect their clothing, or use another prop they may have with them.
14I avoid any name calling at this point.
4Ignore the fact that I forgot their name and carry on the conversation till they get bored and walk away.
5I hope that someone that knows their name and isn't afraid to say it is nearby.
2This never happens to me.
1I don't know anyone well enough to be expected to know their name.
3Umm....SC's other favorite option.

I might ask them to remind me... whatever happened to spill out of my mouth... it's not like I have a ton of control over it.

I avoid saying anyone's name, usually EVERY time, whether I know it or not. I just say "Hi." But many times I've forgotten their names. I hate it when they know mine and I don't remember theirs.

I just wouldn't use their name in the conversation. This would only be a problem if there was someone with me and I felt I should introduce them. I try to avoid using someone's name when there's just the two of us talking - it's a bad habit that I picked up working in nursing (where repeating someone's name as you talk to them is actually helpful, especially to maintain the attention of someone who isn't entirely with it but also to ensure you don't forget it and to make them feel that they are being seen as an individual) but outside of a professional setting, I find it really irritating.

I'm worse at faces. I think I have that upside down face thing.

Me too! I use my customers' names for the same exact reasons.... and I hate it when people use my name a lot when speaking to me, so I would only do it at work.

It's funny how many work-related habits you can pick up - I started using the word "pop" excessively - as in "Can you just pop yourself into the chair while we make your bed?" or "Shall we just pop you some clean trousers on?" or "Can you just pop your arm in the sleeve?". I think because it's such a mild word that it made me sound less like I was bossing them around *smile*

My company paid a fortune for some other company to come in and train us to become "conversational leaders". We were trained in conversational and information gathering techniques.... just subtle little ways to control the mood and flow of a customer service call. I've always thought my job was an experiment in psychology, and I guess they agreed.

One thing that I have carried into my real life is the "empathy statement". It's really effective. *smile* Especially when you don't know what else to say.

What would an empathy statement be? Something like "Oh, that must be very difficult..."?

I never call anyone by their name. It's a quirk of mine. I don't think I've called my wife by her name more than half a dozen times in 26 years. I just yell "Hey are you there?". Don't know why I do that. I feel very uncomfortable addressing anyone by their name. On the opposite side when I hear my wife yell out my name (all the time daily) I immediately think to myself "Now what?"

Most of the time if I run into someone it doesn't really matter much if I recall their name since I wouldn't address them by it anyhow.

Pretty much.

It certainly can be upsetting when such and such happens. It really is aggravating when blah blah blah. etc.

It's funny, because during the training, they provided us with a list of terms that could be used. "Flabbergasted" was one. It became quite the joke..... No one could imagine saying to a customer.... It really is flabberghasting to......
