Noooooooo. No. Nooo.
I don't even like it that much (eh cynicism), but I don't find it offensive. |

No. I can't remember any details in it, but I remember knowing that people found it offensive, reading it, and not finding anything offensive. |

No, it's a classic. |

While I personally did not find the book to be offensive. I would not want my child reading this book unless he were at least in high school (16 or older) because there is quite a bit of swearing in it. Also, I don' think that the main character's outlook on life is really a one I would want my child to share.
By the way, I thought it was good and entertaining book but I did not quite understand why it is considered a literary classic? |

I liked this book. I just read it a couple years ago. Compared to many more recent books, it's quite tame and not offensive at all. I think it has the f-word in it, and a situation with a prostitute. |

"quaint" is the most polite way I could describe anybody who finds "The Catcher in the Rye" offensive. |

It's not offensive at all.
It's also pretty boring. |

I have not read or seen this book to say whether it is offensive or not |

No, it's fine. I read it when I was young, I found it...unrememberable. |

I read it when I was about 20. It was okay. I don't know what people these days would find so offensive about it. As I recall, the narrator says "gosh darn" a lot. Oh my! |

I cannot imagine how anyone could regard the Catcher in The Rye as offensive unless they think that only carefree and innocent young people should ever be portrayed in books... |

I've never read the book BUT, I've seen the movie. |

I've just reread The Catcher in the Rye because of this survey. I can understand why people might have been shocked about it when it was first published. I can understand someone not wanting a 10 year old child reading it because it does mention sex a lot. I don't really see anything offensive about it though, unless you are the type of person who is always going to be offended by anything that isn't The Waltons.
I also thought it was a fantastic book and I definitely read it in a very different way this time. Last time I read it, I was probably about the same age as Holden and I found him quite repulsive (though I mellowed towards him by the end of the book). Reading it a few years later allows me to be a little more objective and see it in the context of everything that's happening to you when you're a teenager (which is obviously taken far into extremes in his case because he's also pretty messed up) so I could feel a lot more sympathy and empathy for him. I've read some other Salinger, but nothing comes close to matching this. |

Yeah, according to a lot of people I've talked to, Holden does have a mental illness. I forgot the name. I'll have to look it up again.....
But i did and still do find Holden to be a very likeable character. =D |
