Years ago. It kept getting more difficult to find one, or to find one that wasn't out of order. The only reason I would call anyway was to call home when grocery shopping to tell my friend the cook that a store was out of something and what would he like me to substitute. Then too, even back then the cost went up to make a call and that bugged me too and being hearing impaired I could not hear well on ordinary phones, especially with traffic in the background. |

I thought it was stupid when they started charging to call time and temperature. Like a person waiting for a bus wants to pay a quarter every time they want to know what time it is. |

I miss public pay phones. No one ever complained of people shouting into the phone about their uncle's gall bladder operation. No one ever complained about "rude pay phone users" or pay phone users being loud or oblivious to those around them. There wasn't this idea floating around that people on pay phones were being 'unsocial' to those in the immediate vicinity. I guess it's not the pay phones I miss, but the attitude about them. People begin using phones they can walk around with, and suddenly all these phone users are "rude"  |

Sometime in the last 20 years, I don't remember. It was after 1986 and before 1999. I don't think I can narrow it down more than that. I do recall that I was calling my parents from a train station and I've had a cell phone since 1999 and the train station was built in 1986. |
