I dont know what to answer because it really depends on how far will take you this roleplaying.. It may lead to weird behaviors sometimes.

I enjoyed (and probably would still enjoy, if I had time and a good gaming group) playing Dungeons and Dragons IRL. But I can't really fathom the fun in pretending to be another person online.

I think I have an idea what it is, but I'd enjoy a brief explanation just to be sure. I don't think it's "wrong" but so far the idea doesn't seem appealing. How does one KNOW when someone is roleplaying?

It's not wrong as long as you aren't deceiving people. To have people who know what's going on and play along is okay. I can see the appeal in it.

I don't think it matters at all.

I've designed various RPG systems.

I use a bell curve generator to apply 'min', 'max', 'likely', and 'likelihood' to situations like jumping distances or quantities.

My magic system is called 'Belief-Mass'. Like E=MC^2, matter and volumes of narrative spiritual enenrgy can be converted into each other, for instance a really powerful spiritual relic could be made by infusing the appropriate sort of gem with the prayer energy of a room full of sorcerors all in a long involved ritual to synchronize their energy frequency on the same subject matter. like water purification or levitation.

I used to do something like this at SC long long ago. Exploring alternative ways of thinking can be useful fun. There's never any good reason to mess with other people heads though.
