To pill or not to pill?

Hypothetically, you become sick and the doctor gives you a pill. The pill removes the discomforts of the illness but does not make you any healthier, would you take the pill?

VotesAnswer
16Indeed I would, without hesitation.
12I would take it until I found something else.
4I would hesitate, look for something else, than make a decision to take the pill.
3I'm incapable of choosing any of the above.
2Highly unlikely, but a small chance I would.
0Never.

No. I can take extra strength tylenol to relieve discomfort. To me, the pill is basically worthless.

I would hesitate because I can't swallow a pill. Then there's the grinding and and taste and the ew.

Eh, few too many variables, but most likely I'd take the pill.

Phenergan, Percoset, Demoral, Vicodin, etc.

Been there, done that.

Will do it again if I have to.

Of course! I'd still look for something to fix whatever is wrong, though. Who would choose not to remove discomfort?

Absolutely. If there is also something that makes me healthier, I would take/do it. But if not, I'd be happy to at least feel better.

i would take it and work on getting myself healthier through other means or in conjunction with my physician. most of the diseases that afflict us in the US are to a certain extent "self inflicted

it didn't say what kind of discomfort, it may be something that tylenol won't touch

*check* I would take it until I found something else.

Medicine should be used to relive discomfort even if it does not cure the ailment. Why would anyone remain in discomfort if relief is available? On the other hand dependence on pills while not seeking good medical treatment is not intelligent.

If there are no side effects and there's no treatment for the causes of the illness then why not?

How strange. I guess it would depend on how much of a weenie I am. If it takes away the discomfort but not the problem that would be kind of dangerous for the "out of sight out of mind" types.

Sounds like my last illness. I knew there wasn't a cure and 'tuffed it out' until I started to lose work over it. Then I took the meds and soon got back to work.

No.....you have to treat the whole body, and the root of the illness, not just put on a bandaid.

If the discomforts of the illness were significant and the pill had no major common side-effects that were worse (or as bad as) the discomfort from the illness, I would probably take the pill.

There are a lot of underlying conditions that we can't cure, or even hope to improve. Palliative care may be all that's on offer, but improving someone's quality of life shouldn't always be seen as second best to saving their life.

I'd take the red pill!
Well, of course I'd take the pill. That's what pain medication is all about. During my period I'm still bloated, but I can't feel my cramps after a few Advil. Yay!
