No. Absolutely not.
(I say this, but I've just embarked on a 50, 000 word project all about apocalypses ) |

There is no apocalypse.
It's a compelling idea, obviously; especially for generations who grew up under the threat of nuclear war. It's just a fantasy. |

No, but I do think we will live through the most radical sudden transformation of society in centuries, the end of the age of hydrocarbon industrialisation and geo-political superpowers. By sudden, I mean spanning between now and 2040.
Otherwise I expect society and technology will still continue to advance for centuries to come, becoming closer to a single-group-minded ant-colony entity. Of course it's that now too if one pulls back the intergalactic telescope far enough. |

I think humanity's obsession with various possible apocalypses is interesting and probably telling us something about our culture's current state of mind. But, I don't think an apocalypse will actually happen. Well, perhaps a minor one, but not an "everybody dies" kind of thing. |

I think it's an understandable delusion to think that the period of history in which your brief lifespan exists is somehow special or different. |

Prolly just the beginning. I don't really think it will necessarily happen all at once. |
Enheduanna | | posted 15-Apr-2008 2:46pm |
No; I don't believe in the concept of apocalypse in any religious context, nor do I think it's likely that the world will completely cease to exist in my lifetime. |

ya its in my lifetime alright. Will i get through it okay? |
Kristal_Rose | | (reply to bill) posted 15-Apr-2008 6:28pm |
That seems to be the state of mind since recorded history in every culture though.
I think it has more to do with people collectively anthropomorphising their own inevitable Berkeleyan end of the world. |
cantilever | | posted 15-Apr-2008 6:47pm |
By the Apocalypse, I think of the breakdown of Western society - caused by financial collapse, energy shortage, overpopulation and food shortages. The Mad Max scenario. I do not mean anything remotely Biblical - that's hogwash! |

I think well see some of that, but not in any instantaneous way we won't adapt too. I imagine some hybrid of local agricultural small-mfgr villages which still supports global tech companies.
It's been a century since the US has been hand-powered, but India and China still are to a large degree, and they do fine in today's world. |

Yes and gee whiz the world feels like it is ending right outside my windows talk about a 70 mph windstorm
and everything flying around in the air out there we go from light to dark just like that wow , plus this small town
is on fire right now a wildland fire and it is moving fast and homes are burning down 2 fires and this one near
Aspen Colorado?
Have not seen anything like this before in a very long time and gee it is not even Summer this is crazy and insane
and those huge bombers are fighting these fires wow and total wow what a whammy
Parts of my home were falling off and blowing away and here I am trying to do emergency repairs outside and
nearly fell off the step ladder to my doom |

I think with the U.S. still being at war in Iraq plus there is a war in Iran I have heard , and with other world hunger
this is the tip of the iceberg and global warming is real as it can get , we look at all these natural disasters earthquakes
and floods plus all those tornados in Tennessee and other states as well getting hit by tornados , and then the
hurricane season is almost here as well yes this is it we are in it
No we do not have to be Christians to realize there is something going with planet earth? |

For every generation there's always stuff going on like this, like WWI, the war to end all wars, like the threat of nuclear world war, like polio or AIDS. The planet has already been through a 100 million ice ages, and yet we still have tons of plants and animals. All global warming will do is make the people in Sri Lanka live in stilt houses with more mosquitos, and knock out a few species who can't migrate. Sure there's an ecological balance, but the system is always self-correcting as we shift to new species.
As long as we don't lose our atmosphere humans will exist for quite some time. A lot of us are about to starve soon though unless we figure out how to replace our dying ocean fishing industry, and find a better transporation/power/industrial fuel than our existing agiculture base.
We do also have to stop cutting down the rain forests which process our CO2. Unfortunately bio-fuel demands will tempt us to do just that to grow more soy. |

Yes if we were to lose the atmosphere we surely would be in deep trouble for sure , I see those huge ice bergs
melting and breaking off on television and a rare sight to see and possibly we could lose our oceans unless
we figure out something soon but yes that is life indeed
But mean while i have those who are trying to get me the help that I need , helping me in a way to be closer to
other transgendered people , if that means moving to places like San Francisco?
they just want me around other people like me , and living out here in the middle of nowhere i really do stand out
among the crowd and being the only transgendered person in this town makes life for me hard and difficult
Yes it is what I wish to do myself be living closer to others like me , people out here just do not understand us at all
I am like public enemy number one to them , or I am like a disease to them and they try to avoid me |

No, but it isn't all to far away. 75 years maybe. |

Didn't the Ancient Greeks believe there had been multiple apocalypses? That would suggest a more circular view of life (death and rebirth) than we currently have. |
Kristal_Rose | | (reply to Melf) posted 17-Apr-2008 1:20am |
The Hindus sure did. They used the metaphor that civilizations come and go like ant colonies.
There are plenty of texts and artifacts indicating remnants of a BC society as advanced as our 19th century, if not beyond what we have now. |
