What is the best word in the English language?

This survey is somewhat experimental. Special instructions must be followed for it to work.
What makes a word "best"? Well, this is meant in an overall sense. Does it sounds good? Does it have a good meaning? Does it look good? Does it have an amazing history? Any and all criteria can be reasons to nominate and/or vote on a word. Nominate and vote on as many as you like and have fun.

Potentially, a follow-up survey can be made to actually put the words with the highest scores to a more-formal vote via a survey. We'll see.

Surely xylem is a common enough word that most people would know (at least roughly) what it means? Or do you not study much plant biology in schools there?

I don't know about the 'best' word, but I try to throw in "anastomose" and/or "anastomosis" whenever I can. It doesn't happen real often.

Makes sense, that's usually where it's used, and the context which I've learned it. I try to apply it otherwise, too, cause it's so good...when I can find a situation where it's appropriate to describe things coming together like that.

I usually manage to say it incorrectly. Even when I get the word right (I embarrassed myself by asking a surgeon about vascular apoptosis) I tend to say "anastomotose"... * wry smile *

I'm a medical student now - I was working as a nursing assistant before but I'm too busy with university at the moment to have a job on the side. I'm enjoying it so far, but there's a lot of new information to take in! * smile *

I'm enjoying it, but it's definitely hard work! I think it's probably a little easier here than in the States because it's not a graduate degree here so most of my peers are fresh from school. I still seem to be putting in a lot of hours though * smile * It's also a *lot* cheaper. I only have to pay £3000 in fees each year - I'm amassing a fair debt (building on the debt from my last degree) but I should qualify with a tiny amount of debt compared with doctors in the US.
