How do you feel about a one-way mission to Mars?

Some background: “Spirit of the Lone Eagle”: an audacious program for a manned Mars landing
Also, To Mars - To Stay (short, colonization) and
A One-Way, One-Person Mission to Mars

This is a somewhat complex issue. But, in summary, the idea is that we could save a lot of expense and trouble if we plan a manned mission to Mars one-way. In other words, any astronaut that goes, will not come back. Either that astronaut will be making the ultimate sacrifice in exchange for the adventure of a lifetime. Or, a more moderate approach might be to essentially attempt to colonize Mars, which would still carry a high risk. A one-way trip may be more likely to succeed because it's easier to plan, so less can go wrong. It may be less of a technical challenge, since it's not necessary to bring along all the fuel and equipment needed for a return trip.

I'm not sure that the need for us to go to Mars is great enough for anyone to sacrifice their life to do it. If they were merely risking their life, and the intention was that they would return, that would be different. That said, I'm sure that there would be individuals out there who would be willing to do this, and who may not see it as a particularly great sacrifice at all.

If people want to do it, let them. I don't see what the big deal is if people are willing to sacrifice their lives, people commit suicide every day, this seems a lot more practical and useful.

Good idea. There'd be plenty of volunteers. Check ignition, and may God's love be with you.

I'm strongly in favor of manned space exploration and I definitely think we've become too risk averse but I'm not sure about this idea. There's something about planning a mission where the person's death is assured that just doesn't sit right.

This sounds like a suicide mission and i could not begin to imagine! putting human lives in harms way , just no
way this could ever happen at all and killing some people this way? Sure would be a good idea! to empty out
some of our jails and prisons and take care of the over crowding by sending condemned men to mars and not
having to worry about them

As long as the people involved understand the risks involved and theres a LOT of regulation put in place, I don't see why not. I am more worried about the "they'll never get to come back to Earth ever again part". Though how would you take into account minors being forced by their idiot parents to abandon Earth and never be able to come back again. I am also more bothered by our tax dollars going in to either directly subsidize this or pay for all the regulations and inspections.

Yes Biggles like some of these murderers behind bars in prison and those repeat offenders , we could offer them
the chance of a one way trip to Mars and to take care the over crowding in jails and prisons problem solved?

JessicaWoman99

Yes this is a great way to empty out our prisons and help save on taxes for the taxpayers and perhaps they
could build fewer and fewer prisons , yes send all the condemned prisoners to Mars a one way ticket

It would be their ticket out of prison and freedom for them and a chance for them to go to Mars one way , or they
could choose life in prison down here on earth give them a choice?
There are probably those that would choose to go into space and take the one way ticket to Mars instead of
rotting away behind bars

And Mars wouldn't be a prison for them once they were there? At least in a real prison, they wouldn't necessarily be in solitary confinement! (But I suppose you're right that there are some people who *might* see it as preferable...)

behind iron bars any longer

I have no problem with it, as long as the person wants to go... I have a problem with the ultimate reason for colonizing though... Did you know that a bill has already been passed that will turn over any exploitation such as mining to private industry? In other words, if anything of value is found up there, it's the people who pay for the research and development but private industries who will make the profit... That really sucks.

As long as how I feel about others doing it do not involve me going I would say "Both colonizing and sacrificing are OK"
If it was me going my choice would be "fudge dat"
People are just not smart enough to figure things out full term situations like this. You can figure that in the beginning mistakes will be made, you can kinda see how things will be in the next few years, but you cannot figure in the ego factor. Some butt-hole going out there is gonna want to be a king or soemthing.

Here's how I picture it will go down:

US world leader: hey, I got an idea. Lets colonize Mars. We'll send a few volunteers to Mars so that our great great great grandchildren can one day move there to have a better life.

the rest of the UN: cool. Tell you what. You pay for about 50% of the cost since you own the world and we'll all pitch in the rest.

US: ok, cool.

one half of the US population: Der, This is an awesome idea. Dee Dee Dee.
another one forth of the US population: This is a retarded liberal idea. Our tax payer money paying to help out the world, like always. Why not take care of our own.
another one forth of the US population: This is a retarded right-winged idea. Always trying to own the world, and now space. No wonder the rest of the world hates us.

20 years later: Idea launches.

US: Cool, can't wait to plan our flag on Mars.

50 years later: The people there start their lives from scratch. They work hard and become very successful.

US liberal half: Damn, the RepubliNazi's will try to make Mars our 51 st so they can screw up the electoral college and steal the election.

US conservative half: Damn, the DemoCommies will try to make Mars our 51 st so they can screw up the electoral college and steal the election.

some Frenchy dipcrap at the UN: Hey, pig dog, what makes you think think you own the world

the rest of the world: Hey, he has a point. What makes you American's think you own the Solar System. There's the rest of the world you know.

US diplomat: Um, I don't know, gee, maybe cause we I don't know, focking subsidized the whole damn operation while the UN didn't do squat. Mars is ours doges.

the rest of the world: No, it belongs to the world.

US diplomat: We have nuclear missiles fool.

the rest of the world: fudge you US

Our great great grandchildren on Mars: hey, whats all the fuss about.

--- WW3 breaks out. Mass starvation in 3rd world countries because of crop failures and overpopulation, global warming. Meanwhile, Mars becomes the wealthiest civilization in nearby space with a thriving economy. All the poor war torn refuguees from Earth get on a spaceship to escape and go to Mars for a better life.

--- 10 years later, our first finally spaceship arrives.

Two Martians talking to each other: Oh crap. Man. Fudging wetbacks.
Reply: I'd bet they'll work for pennies and steal all our jobs. I told you we should have built that border force field.

Send everyone there who sticks their nose where it doesn't belong, intervenes in situations that don't concern them, tries to tell other people what not to do, and thinks it is their right to tell total strangers what NOT to say to other people.

Then everyone who is left will feel more free to say what we want to each other, without total strangers getting their panties in a wad over stuff we aren't even saying to THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
