| Melf | posted 23-Feb-2008 6:35pm Put down. Put to sleep is misleading; when I was eight and Dexter the rabbit was 'put to sleep', I asked my mother when he was going to wake up. |

It's more delicate than the title suggests. Thought-provoking. |

| kirst | posted 24-Feb-2008 3:38am Put to sleep or euthanized, depending on my audience. Would be uncomfortable telling my kids (nearly 8 and 4.5) that an animal was "put to sleep" as it might scare them when they're going to bed at night. However, not an issue as we have no pets. When our cat was euthanized, I didn't tell Claire (who was 4) that the vet was coming that day. Our cat was in really bad shape, not completely conscious. I told Claire that the cat was dying and that she probably wouldn't make it through the day. Then the vet came while Claire was at school.
I have explained what euthanization is, what it entails, and why vets do this. |
| justjulie | posted 24-Feb-2008 7:08am put down/murdered...depends on the situation. |
| Biggles | posted 24-Feb-2008 8:36am I would say "put down" if I were talking about my own pet. If I were a vet and I was talking to someone whose pet I was going to put down I would say "put to sleep". |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 24-Feb-2008 1:36pm Anytime a pet is put to sleep there is just sadness and it hurts so much |

That's a very good answer. |
| Jody | posted 26-Feb-2008 11:23am I've never had to euthanize a pet, but when someone else discusses it I try to use the term they prefer. |
