I don't have an opinion on this matter. |

If they didn't mean for their devices to be seen as bombs, they should not be punished at all. |

You know what? A "hoax bomb" is something that someone pretends is a bomb that isn't... not something that some idiot who's never seen Aquateen Hunger Force can't tell isn't a bomb. |

If it's really a hoax bomb, punish the hoaxers moderately. If it's a mooninite and the Boston Police are just too stupid, then the police should be punished for being the terrorists. |

The people making these bombs are helping the terrorists |

I'd say severe punishment. Unless it's labeled clearly it's fake. (faux hoax)
I'm not a fan of zero tolerance, and I don't think there is any thing remotely funny about it. I don't think we are over reacting, I don't think we need to get over ourselves. I think it is a dangerous hobby to pursue. Dangerous to crowd control.
Am I missing something? Is this a real art project or political statement or something. I've never heard of "hoax bombs". |

They're being stupid and asking for trouble, definitely. I'm not sure about some of the other options. Maybe in part it depends on context, where it was sent, why, etc. I can see how it might be appropriate to at least fine someone who sent one somewhere that it caused a huge ordeal; maybe they should have to pay for the panic and inconvenience they caused. But I don't think they should have to go to jail; the jails are overcrowded as it is, and why bother with something that is ultimately harmless? But I haven't given this topic any thought before this, so I don't know what factors I might not be considering. |

Punishment etc, really depends on what people are doing with their fake bombs. Are they playing around in their basement without intending to show their fake bomb to anyone? Are they abandoning a fake bomb somewhere in public? Are they dumping a fake bomb somewhere and then making hoax calls to the police about them? Motive is key. |

I've considered doing it myself.
My sister-in-law's brother works for the bomb squad (mounties). Apparently it's pretty fun. They get to play with robots and stuff. He's very secretive about it, but he kind of let it slip that there are a lot more of them than people realise. Most of it is kept pretty hush hush from the media. |
