I go back and forth across the store -- first I look for the things I came in for, but I also look around -- especially when I go to Trader Joe's. I'm not always in that much of a hurry to leave Trader Joe's. |

I usually shop at the same grocery store, and try to make my list in categories based on the order of the aisles (more or less), like Produce, Cereal, Meals, Snacks, Frozen Foods, Breads, Dairy. That way I don't have to go back and forth among the aisles much. |

I walk down each aisle in order, but I always miss something and end up having to go back to find it, which results in some back-and-forthing. |

I've been living with my parents so it's been a year since I did a proper grocery shop but in the past I would walk up and down each aisle that I was interested in (fruit and veg, dairy, eggs, pasta/rice, baking, reduced) ignoring the aisles I was not interested in (household products, toiletries, meat, processed foods, alcohol, frozen, crisps/biscuits/chocolate, clothing etc). I'd usually do that in the order that the shop was actually set out, except that if I did decide to buy something frozen (which I usually didn't because it would melt by the time I got home, so I would more often pick up frozen foods from a local Iceland on my way home) I would always go to that aisle last. I could only buy what I could carry so I had to pick up household items separately - I usually found that the supermarket wasn't the cheapest place for those kinds of things anyway. I would often spend some time at the end of my shop walking back around the shop and putting back some items that had taken me over budget or that I realised I wouldn't be able to carry back to my house. I used to really enjoy grocery shopping - I found it relaxing, as long as I was able to take my time about it. |

My wife and I go together. We do most aisles in order, though we will skip some (the snack chips, soda and diaper aisles are easy to skip, usually). Sometimes, we miss something and have to go back. I do make a list, but it's always missing stuff. I partly depend on seeing stuff as I walk and realizing we need to get more of it. |

I'm in the grocery store every night. Just head for the things I need and that's it. We don't do any major shopping at any one time. The store is 2 minutes away so it's no big deal. |
romkey | | posted 12-Jun-2008 6:47pm |
I walk around the outside perimeter and not the inside aisles, only because that's where the things are that I want. I buy very little processed food, and that's usually in the interior of the store. I know where the things I'm looking for are; I go to those things in sequence and then purchase them. |

Kristal_Rose | | posted 13-Jun-2008 3:45am |
I systematically go down each aisle, skipping the totally irrelevant ones.
This is probably more efficient when you shop like I do, rather infrequently, out of most everything. |

I had a problem getting carried away, not keeping in mind what I could carry. I once amazed myself carrying home 21 bags of groceries on my bicycle. I was thinking I might have to ask them to hold my stuff and make two trips. |

We pretty much hit each aisle in order.

21 bags!? How did you manage it? |
Kristal_Rose | | (reply to Biggles) posted 13-Jun-2008 10:54pm |
Lots of bungee cords, a large laundry basket for a trunk, 6 bags on the handlebars, a large bag clipped to the front rack.
I once carried a 10 foot tall bamboo temple, wicker throne, folding table, fringe of 40 sea souls (shoes/sandals i foundwashed up on the beach) and trunk of supernatural relics on my bike.
My mom returned from China reporting that those guys carry three piece sofa sets on their bikes, so I knew it could be done.
It requires balancing like a ballet dancer, sticking a leg out 90º just to correct a slight steering shift. |

I know the grocery stores, like the back of my hand. Depending, I scan the aisles, unless I'm in a hurry, then I just go to the aisle I need an item. |

This is good! Listen carefully! When I arrive at the grocery store the first thing I do is look around to plan my strategy, I usually go first to the meat department. I hate being at the check out and seeing some idiot with a bigger steak than the one I found because he got there first. Once I have my beef or whatever I take a look around for cute women and I see where they are going and slowly I head in that direction. Sometimes I buy things I didn’t want like fruit, she’s checking out the melons and so am I! I have bought more tomatoes then I can eat trying to meet women, the whole process of choosing tomatoes is amazing, the feeling the squeezing all really erotic, especially when a beautiful woman is doing the squeezing. Then if I get shot down (more often then not) I do my real shopping Sometimes I walk all the isles but usually I get in and get out with pretty much what I came in for, unless I see another pretty girl and then I am back buying thing I didn’t want.

It depends... If I know what I want, I go, get it, and get out... If I haven't eaten before I go, and need a lot, I end up with all sorts of stuff since I go around the outside and then up and down the aisles...
|
Kristal_Rose | | (reply to LJD) posted 19-Jun-2008 5:53am |
I know the store full well too. The point of doing the aisles in sequence is using the goods there as your reminder of what you need to get instead of creating a list, and not having to plan an efficient route, rered your list several times, or put it in aisle sequence.
I did once write myself an Excel grocery spreadsheet that was in categorical order but could be printed out in aisle order. It also tracked miminimum prices so I could buy long-shelf-life goods pantry style when the price came down. |
LJD |
You plan well Kristal Rose. I used to write lists when my children were young. I actually made weekly menus, bought food accordingly....but not anymore. I believe I shop alot like you. |
Kristal_Rose | | (reply to LJD) posted 20-Jun-2008 12:47am |
It's an old world way of doing it. Pantries aren't part of the modern instant demand paradigm. My family ranch had a full pantry room full of jellies, honey, fruit, and veggies (probably even salted mutton) all grown on the property. |
LJD |
Kristal Rose, your family sounds much like mine. My parents were farmers, their parents were farmers. When we came from Missouri when I was two, my mom and dad still had a huge garden, my mom canned. I was raised on a 1/3 acre parcel, of course unlike what my parents were raised on. I remember my grandparents home in MO. We visited when I was six years old....I'll never forget. They had nice cellars loaded with canned goods, foodstuffs. They also had a good sized inside pantry. They looked. planned ahead. My aunt and uncle, that still live in MO, they go to the store once a month. They have what they need on the farm. They have a huge home on 1500 acres....but the government pays them not to grow. The children moved into town, one is a CPA, another owns a cable company, the other cousin, I don't know what he does. They're all down to earth people. I only wish my cousins would have kept up with the farming.
I think especially in today's world, where money may be short in families, that people would plan more. |
Zang | | posted 20-Jun-2008 5:15pm |
I tend to go around the outside perimeter and only go up and down the aisles that I need to. Most of my shopping takes place on the perimeter though. |
LindaH | | posted 20-Jun-2008 9:29pm |
Know what would be fun? To pick a person as you go in, who also just arrived and is ahead of you. Follow that person around the store, and put everything in your cart that they put in theirs, like you are their mirror/shadow. get in line behind them at the checkout.
It would be stupid, but hilarious. |
Kristal_Rose | | (reply to LJD) posted 20-Jun-2008 11:38pm |
I expect many do plan. Two hours of planning one's credit management can save more than years of planned grocery shopping. |

Yes, indeed. |
