No. I can think of cheaper ways to look like a fool and I already have two functioning legs that don't seem to have let me down so far.
Besides, I don't think it's even legal to ride them in public. |

No, and I don't especially want to. It's more that I don't care, but that option didn't say whether you had ridden one or not so I didn't pick it. |

No - I think I'd look a bit of a poser if I did. I've never even seen one in person though. |

From the wikipedia article:
Advocacy groups for pedestrians and the blind in the US have been critical of Segway PT use. Specifically, America Walks and the American Council of the Blind oppose allowing the PT to be driven on sidewalks, even for those with disabilities, and have actively lobbied against any such legislation. America Walks' official position[4] is:
“Nothing that moves faster than walking speed belongs in the space intended for walking.”
That's idiotic. Is it worse for a pedestrian to get hit by a Segway rider, or a Segway rider to get hit by a vehicle? This is why I ride my bike on the sidewalk.
Nothing that moves slower than a vehicle belongs in the space intended for vehicles. |

As a pedestrian, I hate it when people ride their bikes on the pavement. Nothing that moves faster than a pedestrian belongs in the space intended for pedestrians. Admittedly, having a cycle lane would be the ideal situation, but if bikes hit pedestrians, they can kill or cause serious injury so I don't want them anywhere near where I have to walk. I know roads aren't necessarily the safest places for cyclists, but that doesn't mean that cyclists have any right to endanger anyone else - two wrongs don't suddenly make a right.

There's more potential for serious injury or death from a car hitting a bike or a segway. It's easier for a bike to swerve or stop to avoid a collission. I'd rather be a pedestrian getting hit by a segway or a bike and be a segway or bike rider getting hit by a car.
What about people on inline skates? |

| Biggles | | (reply to LindaH) posted 27-Feb-2008 3:43pm |
Still, as I said before, two wrongs don't make a right. It's irrelevant that it is safer for you, as the cyclist, to be on the pavement - you're still endangering pedestrians by doing something that is illegal (at least it is here). I've seen elderly people who have been hit by bikes that should have been nowhere near them and suffered very serious injuries.
I've never seen anyone skating down the pavement - it's a frequent sight in public squares, but the people who do it tend to carry their skates when they are travelling to their destination. |
LindaH | | (reply to Biggles) posted 27-Feb-2008 3:47pm |
That doesn't make sense to me. People should run the risk of getting killed by a vehicle so as not to run the risk of injuring someone else. Whose safety is more important? |
| Biggles | | (reply to LindaH) posted 27-Feb-2008 3:58pm |
Pedestrians can die in collisions with bikes too. I'm not saying that it isn't unreasonable for you to be annoyed that roads aren't safer for cyclists, I'm saying that it unreasonable for you to use that as grounds to endanger another group of people. Go campaign for improved cycle lanes in your area, but don't pretend that their poor provision mitigates your endangerment of others. If you don't feel safe using your bike on the road, then I'd suggest you shouldn't be cycling at all. |
LindaH | | (reply to Biggles) posted 27-Feb-2008 4:02pm |
People who can slow down when they see pedestrians aren't really endangering others. Bike riding at excessive speeds is a separate issue. Other people who don't pay attention, or who bike ride too fast on a sidewalk shouldn't affect careful and safe bike riders. I've never hit a pedestrian, or even come close. |
| Biggles | | (reply to LindaH) posted 27-Feb-2008 4:08pm |
I could maybe accept that if you live somewhere where there are few or no corners, no hills and very few pedestrians. Otherwise, I'm not sure that it's possible for you to really be confident of avoiding people. Confidence resulting from the fact it's "never happened before" isn't necessarily well-founded. |
LindaH | | (reply to Biggles) posted 27-Feb-2008 4:10pm |
True. I've never been hit by a car before, but I'm not confident that it won't happen. I have more confidence in my own ability to not hit pedestrians than I have in drivers of motor vehicles not to hit me. And that's why I ride on the sidewalk. |
| Biggles | | (reply to LindaH) posted 27-Feb-2008 4:18pm |
I bet plenty of car drivers have more confidence in their own ability to not hit cyclists than they do in other drivers not hitting them - which is why they probably drive closer to you than the cars on the other side of the road!
As a pedestrian, I have more confidence that I won't suffer injury if there's nothing on the pavement but other pedestrians, but I suppose that's just tough... |
LindaH | | (reply to Biggles) posted 27-Feb-2008 4:21pm |
I just think it's all around safer for a bike rider or segway rider to be on the sidewalk than the street. less likely for an accident to result in casualty.
I'd feel safer as a bike rider if there were no cars on the road. |

But didn't they just build a bike trail in front of your house?
Danny still acts unaware and NEEDS to ride his bike to stay in shape. (or get back in shape I should say) He is oblivious when he rides around the road. Hardly anyone walks on the sidewalks on our road so he rides his bike on the sidewalk. He actually stops when he sees people and turns his bike around or gets off and runs his bike on by them. He hates hitting anything, even bushes. lol |
LindaH | | (reply to Lahdee) posted 28-Feb-2008 11:32am |
Yeah they did. Some areas around here don't have bike trails, though. And, people walk on the bike trails. I don't see how it's any different. |
