Should we bring back Dueling?

image [full]

As practiced from the 15th to 20th centuries in Western societies, a duel was a consensual fight between two people, with matched, usually deadly weapons in accordance with rules explicitly or implicitly agreed upon, over a point of honor, usually accompanied by a trusted representative (who might themselves fight), often in contravention of the law.

Perhaps with paint guns or banana pies. It might even be a more just way to select our president than who can buy the most corporate allied media.

We never got to see the really interesting duels, like poison dart blow guns or bb pistols. "After a grueling six day duel, Alfred Gronk has finally succumbed to Edward de Veigh's relentless Frisbee barrage".

On the down side, duelling might make some good innocent people succumb to pressure to defend their position with their life. On the upside, it would quickly remove remove from society those who find it accepable to handle affairs with fighting. ".. lost mom in a duel over that bridge game dispute".

Good novel question.

I guess so * wry smile * . Undecided. On the one hand, that's a great way we can take out the macho idiots out of the gene pool. Don't we already have something like that in the form of gang violence.

On the other hand, I am not sure if I want to be that libertarian about it. Allowing people to kill each other, even if voluntary, does seem kinda extreme. Also, whose gonna pick up the health care cost for the people that survive but just get injured really badly?

I'm with SY. I'm all for "To each their own" but I'm not sure if we should be allowing people to fight to the death, at least not without intervening and making sure they are both sane. I'm in favor of allowing people to fight without weapons (even in public!) But letting people fight with deadly weapons seems out there.

It's a bad way to settle disputes and it's stupid but it could be a better alternative such as rather than dragging thousands of people to their deaths in a war the two leaders could duel and only one life will be lost. I'm kidding.

In today’s society we have laws and legal avenues to settle disputes the shedding of blood over honor is a far reach but possible in extreme situations, but to ‘bring dueling back’ is stupid!

We could use this like the odd/even gas rationing plan of the 70's.
