Seems to me that a conversation about nutrition is in order, not that it will change peoples eating habits but it will point out what crap we eat. My sister is trying to diet, and sure we all want to support her, and in the process of examining her diet, the thing that stuck me as a key component in diet and weight control was being aware of eating. By that I mean thinking “I am eating” not responsive eating, (eating in response to stress or anxiety). Planning meals and sitting at a table at regular intervals and looking at the food as you eat, tasting the food as you eat, chewing, swallowing, pause, look, taste, chew, swallow. Hunger is triggered by blood sugar; appetite on the other hand is triggered by visual and aromatic senses triggering spontaneous consumption. The key is the remove the spontaneous component from the eating process, think before you eat.

I eat less when I don't plan meals. When I plan meals, I eat because it is mealtime, whether I am hungry or not. I can't stand eating when I'm not hungry.

bowl of granola for breakfast....even though i really like to stay away from it, for i used to use it as a stoner food in my young days, i would party all day and not eat, then come home eat granola or grapenuts then pass out and sleep heavily
so, when i eat it now, i tend to still get sleepy.

That is kinda my point, scheduled meals puts your system on a schedule, eating when you feel like it usually leads to eating food that is not planned for, snacks, (which is usually junk food). Where as if you plan your meal, over time you system will adjust to the new schedule and you should begin to eat less spontaneously. You should not eat if you are not hungry at least not a full meal. My point is my sister grabs food at a whim, and then sits down to a full meal scarfing it down and before her hunger reflex can tell her brain she is full….on to a second helping.

Oh. I don't eat until I am full, I eat until I'm no longer hungry. I don't have a big appetite, and the snacks around here are things like fruit and wheat crackers.

Wholeweat fusilli pasta with peas, sweetcorn and broccoli in a homemade tomato sauce (onions, garlic, pepper, oregano, thyme, tomato puree, tinned tomatoes, and stock paste...but then I had to add a tandoori spice blend, some sweetener and some yoghurt in an attempt to counter the unbelievable acidity of the economy tomatoes - they are usually much better than that *wry smile* )
