I haven't read the whole thing, but I was in a play of it years ago. I've never found Dickens very appealing to read, but it definitely translates well to the stage. |
Melf | | (reply to Biggles) posted 23-Feb-2008 1:02pm |
Why don't you like Dickens? I've only started reading him recently because I'm quite bitter that all through school and all through college I'm not going to have studied any, which is silly. Who were you in the play?
|
| Biggles | | (reply to Melf) posted 23-Feb-2008 1:07pm |
I was Jaggers, which was a pretty fun part to play.
I find Dickens rather dense going whilst also being over-caricaturised and simplistic. I haven't really attempted to sit down and read it properly though, so maybe I should before I knock it completely. I have a huge list of books-to-read though, and no regular slot in which to read them. I hate starting a book and then having to leave it for long periods, or not finding the time to read it at all, so I often find that I just don't bother starting them at all nowadays. Which is a shame, because I love to read |
Melf | | (reply to Biggles) posted 23-Feb-2008 1:24pm |
I agree that his characters are simplistic; and in both Oliver Twist and Great Expectations I dislike that the reader is meant to feel all kinds of pain for the protagonist and his innocence, when just it turns into tedious naivety - adding to the density. But I don't mind dense books too much, because I really dig a lot of atmosphere, which doesn't make sense now I've typed it but I don't know how else to describe it.
Do you ever have time for audiobooks? As in, whilst commuting and so on? |
| Biggles | | (reply to Melf) posted 23-Feb-2008 1:31pm |
Dense is fine, but it has to be a little more meaningful or worthwhile than I think Dickens is.
I haven't tried listening to an audiobook in years, but I think I'd find them annoying and I'm not sure that I would get the same visualisation of the world of the book. I'd have to buy something to play them with too - my gigantic old laptop wouldn't be too great on the tram! Do you listen to them much? |
Melf | | (reply to Biggles) posted 23-Feb-2008 1:34pm |
Yeah, but it's often when I've already read the book and want a brush up. They're not the best for anything too heavy, and a lot of how I end up feeling about them is to do with the narrator. |

I've just finished reading A Tale of Two Cities Not nearly as twee as I expected - I think his dialogue is fantastic and I love a good story of redemption, but I do think his more general narrative is very unfocused. All in all though, a success. I shall have to try some more Dickens |
