What do I think? I think you're trying to find proof for a matter of faith. Faith doesn't require evidence or proof. That's why it's called faith, not science.
I also think that the Bible is a collection of stories and poems written by people, not evidence for the existence of god. | moviesnob | | posted 19-Jan-2008 1:01pm |
How did this get past qual? | | Biggles | | posted 19-Jan-2008 1:04pm |
The God of the Bible is brutal, petty, unforgiving, genocidal, egotistic and contradictory. He is a monster. If He existed, I would not worship Him, I would despise Him.
Fortunately, I have no reason to believe that God really exists as the evidence strongly suggests that He does not. The Bible provides no good evidence for the existence of God, while its many contradictions provide good evidence that it does not have a divine origin. The main concepts of Christianity are riddled with holes, and the dogma that has arisen to try and cover them up is frequently ridiculous and akin to trying to fight one's way out of a non-existent paper bag by adding yet another non-existent paper bag. Devout theologians throughout the ages have acknowledged this, time and time again - that is why the major religions all hold faith (belief in the absence of, or contradicted by evidence) to be such a virtue. Even they could not look at the available evidence - be it Biblical, scientific or reasoned deduction - and use it to prove that God existed.

While I believe in God, I can think of many reasons why a person wouldn't. I've gone through periods where I didn't. I'm also not going to set out to prove anything to anyone. I don't think you can prove there is a God. If someone doesn't believe in God, that has nothing to do with me. That's their personal decision and I'm not about to try to shove my beliefs down anyone's throat. I certainly don't want anyone trying to do that to me. Now, if someone asks me about my beliefs, I'll talk to them about it. If that doesn't happen, I keep my personal beliefs and opinions to myself. | southernyankee | | posted 19-Jan-2008 2:02pm |

No I don't think the Bible has enough "evidence." It's quite easy for me to think there's no "god." Why should I believe what some people wrote long ago and/or what other people tell me now? I think for myself. The Bible is also written in a way that makes it difficult to understand these days, and there are also various ways to interpret it. | bill | | posted 19-Jan-2008 3:28pm |

It was Right Wingers and Robber Barons who didn't believe in a social contract. Yes indeed Frostbrand and so sorry yes Jesus was in fact a socialist you are right on about this and something i
did not understand ? still he is the Son of God | Frostbrand |
Nope, Jesus was a man who was killed by the same kind of people who today try to elect on his grave for trying to give the power to the have-nots. Just like Ghandi, or Dr. King, or Malcom X after he toned down his rhetoric.
And of course you have to buy the socialist part becuase a lot of that made it into the Bible. Seriously, there are chunks of that book that, when you take away the genocide, incest, and slavery, read like socialist tracts. | | mrmarm | | posted 20-Jan-2008 6:19pm |

Yes Frostbrand I did look some of this up Jesus was in a way a socialist to help those in poverty and Jesus was
friendly with people and in good company of people
Jesus was many many things he was claimed to be a prophet of John the Baptist and of Nazareth of
Galilee he was a prophet Matthew 21:11
Mark 6:6 Jesus marvelled because of their unbelief. And he went around about the villages, teaching.
Luke 24:19 And said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which
was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people.
Immanuel in the New Testament and Matthew 1:23 The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they
will call him Immanuel meaning God with us
Matthew 24 :When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home
as his wife. 25 But he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.
No Jesus was the Son of God who died for your sins and mine and all the sins of this ugly horrible world
the Romans crucified Jesus on the cross at Calvary the Roman government crucified Jesus
and I do know my bible pretty good and my bible does not lie | | JessicaWoman99 |

No the Holy Bible does not devalue life it is man who is so corrupt and man who rises above God thinking he
knows more than our Lord God does
It is the Lord God who created all life on earth , it is the Lord God who sent Jesus his only begotten son born
of a woman the virgin birth to die for you and me on that Cross at Calvary for my sins your sins Frostbrand and
all the sins of this whole world , this whole corrupt and sinful world and it all started after Adam and Eve
dis-obeyed God in the garden and ate the fruit just like mankind is doing right not dis-obeying the Lord God
and thinking God does not exist fools they are and fools they will be in the end when Jesus comes
back to take those of us home who believe in him he is the Son of God and all he is
Some will wake up in that place called HELL"
they will realize their mistake of saying no to the Almighty Lord God and regret it for ever yes for ever and only you
will know this.

Well let me explain go to Habakkuk look at 1:11 Then shall his mind change, and he shall pass over, and offend
imputing this his power unto his god.
12 Art thou not from everlasting. O Lord my God, mine Holy one? we shall not die. O Lord, thou hast ordained them
for judgment; and, O mighty God, thou hast established them for correction.
And prophecies have come true and many more are coming true we are seeing the Mark of the Beast the

My fear is that persons would not have the ability to be objective and open minded enough to have a civil and open conversation after all it is a sensitive subject. You say your Bible doesn't lie. Well, it may not lie per se, but it certainly can't get it's facts straight (never mind that you are anthropomrophizing a book, which is the kind of thign I expect from a Disney movie not an alledged adult).
Cut-n-pasted from the Failed Bible Prophecies thread on the Forums.
"Jonah 3:4 And Jonah began to enter into the city a day's journey, and he cried, and said, Yet forty days, and Nineveh shall be overthrown.
Nineveh was never overthrown. Why? Because God changed his mind in verse 3:10, despite what Malachi 3:6, Numbers 23:19 and Ezekiel 24:14 says about God never changing his mind." | | JessicaWoman99 |

I think you missed my point. Perhaps it would help if I explained what anthropomorphizing is. It is "to attribute human form or personality to things not human" (thank you Merriam-Webster's). This is what you are doing with that book. And that's all it is. A book. No amount of circular logic that a 5 year old could spot can convince me otherwise. A book cannot lie or tell the truth, only the people who write them can, and the Bible was written by people, people who wanted power, and the best way to get power is to convicne people that you are somehow divinely chosen or divine yourself. There is little difference intellectually speaking between the authors of the Bible, and men like Xerxes, or the Roman Emperors, or the Egyptian Pharoahs. | | JessicaWoman99 |

Nobody does my thinking for me and I choose to live my life by the words of my Lord God an instruction book for
my daily life and truly what the Bible is to me and what it means to me everyday of my life
And no control freaks have ever written a Bible before and they would not know how to or where to begin
sounds like you need a journey through the Holy land and see all the bloodshed and violence and the other sides
of the bible that were written and inspired by the Lord God who will judge us all at the time of our death and your
choice my choice has already been selected | | JessicaWoman99 |

Human form you said it yourself and Jesus became a human one of us to rid the world of sin......now go figure

You want to prove an untruth with math? Yeah, not gonna happen. | southernyankee | | posted 21-Jan-2008 2:17am |
I hate to be a dick about it (ok, thats a lie, I don't), but religious people aren't the only ones guilty of raising hysteria.
I also hate to get off the subject (ok, thats a lie too) but just like religion, environmentalists have used alarmism making very similar prophecies. EG: The world will end soon, the end is near. Take global warming, which is an excellent example of what I am talking about. Sure, you can find threads of evidence and say that parts of your prophecy came true. Ok, now just replace "sin" with "destroying the environment", replace penance the RCC used to charge in confession with "carbon credits", and "God will smite us with floods" with "global warming" and you got yourself a secular religion.
Besides environmentalism, communists did/do the same thing. Theres your fear mongers always telling you how far the gap between the rich and the poor is widening (but conveniently you never hear about the decreases) and that the middle class is supposedly disappearing. (ok, thats sort of bullcrap too, the prior are examples of what socialists do, not comies). As to the recession, its just part of the natural cycle of ups-and-downs meant to clear out the dead wood. Then off course the motherlord of communist prophecies, that the US will collapse and we should prepare to build out own communities (at least thats what kristal rose's radio was saying-- speaking of which whatever happened to her).
Then lets not forget the politically neutral (neither left nor right) nuts in the survivalist movement. Well, the point is, theres a long list of idiots yelling until they're blue in the face of how the world is about to end soon, offering examples of "evidence" that their prophecy will happen, off course the evidence is stuff that happened that matches some crackpot theory involving some arbitrary list of events.
Now, back to the topic at hand, the existence of (or lack of) God or an afterlife is a separate issue from the Bible. True, the Bible (and just about every other Holy Book---ever, was disproven) over and over again. But that still doesn't really prove the atheist point either. Disproving the Bible doesn't really disprove a God. It only weeds out the blind faithful ones out of the debate. Afterall, we still don't even know what consciousness is.
(ps, frostband, if you're actually reading this, since this isn't a reply to anyone but just an orphan comment, you can't call me a liar since I tell you in advance when I am lying. You also can't call me a rightwinger because I make fun of very diverse set of people and idealogies). | Melf | | posted 21-Jan-2008 2:29am |

No, the Bible doesn't have any evidence at all. If you're going to try and convince people otherwise, I'd try and come up with a better argument than that. | Frostbrand |

OK, the difference here, and it's a HUGE one, is that while Biblical prophecies are super vague, the reality of global warming that so far only the major polluters, the easily misled, and bribed "scientists" deny are to put it mildly a lot more specific, and can pinpoint to within a decade, wheras religious prophecies basiclaly say "it will happen either tomorow or in 2000 years." Global warming* denial illustrates a pretty big weakness of Right Wing movementarianism (thank you thesaurus; I have a new favorite word). Climate change science isn’t partisan at all, but as long as the movementarians think that attacking the science will score a vctory against Evil Liberalism they will go on attacking, reality, logic, and common sense be damned. All the oil industry lobby needed to do was polarize a scientific matter along political lines and the Right Wingers in the U.S, and abroad willingly became what amounts to the private army for a cause "almost completely tangential(sp?) to their individual interests." The part in quotes is somethign I saw in an anonymous MySpace posting and I liked the phrase.
* For what it's worth, I concede that "global warming" is a bad name for the problem, but alas, it was decided without any input from me since I wasn't born yet.

Actually, that's not at all true. http://www.economist.com/world/displaystory.cfm?st... The decreases all happened under a system that was more like the kind of capitalism I talk about; the kind with oversight.

Are you seriously comparing objective peer reviewed studies with religious goobledygook? That makes about as much sense as doing police skectehes with fingerpaints.

I don't dispute that you make fun of all sides, but that doesn't change the fact that you espouse ideas that are generally held by Right Wingers. | | Pomeranian | | posted 21-Jan-2008 4:04am |
