I've never needed to use anything beyond paracetamol and ibuprofen - and that's only if I have a headache and/or sore throat associated with the cold. Otherwise I wouldn't take anything. My Mum likes to take a decongestant, but I'm not keen.
I wouldn't take anything for a mild cough - cough medicine doesn't do much. |

I don't use cough medicines. I have been using Emer-Gen-C, or similar Vitamin C drinks. |

Which any of the following medicines are good for colds?
Poor grammar! You mean “Which “IF” any of the following medicines are good for colds?”
Most of them will alleviate symptoms, but none will do much for a cold. My cure for colds is orange juice and vodka, sleep, and chicken soup! I have also found a good long sauna or hot tub does wonders, gets a good sweat going. But do not forget to replace the body fluid, that’s where orange juice and vodka come in! If you do not like vodka rum is a good substitute. Garlic is good for congestion; it breaks up the mucus in your lungs and throat.
So what I do is eat a large bowl of chicken soup loaded with garlic, and sit in a sauna drinking orange juice spiked heavily with vodka or rum (gin will even work) Then I go to sleep and wake up with no more cold! Works every time!
I forgot to mention hot peppers are also a good remedy! |

There aren't many medicines that are truly good for colds. Some of them help alleviate the symptoms caused by the infection and your body's immune response to it. None of these hold any hope of actually helping your body fight off the cold - rest, fluids and good nutrition are your best hope in that area.
Some people seem to think that antibiotics help, but they don't. Antibiotics treat bacterial infections, not viral. Vaccines help prime the immune system to fight viruses, but there are many, many specific viruses that cause colds.
As for treating the symptoms, try different things and see what works for you. Different people respond to different treatments. |

Yeah, because every cold germ exits your body at a fast rate through your nose. |

Vick's formula 44 or NyQuil are good for colds or just try and overdose that will kill the cold for sure |

I don't tend to get colds, so I don't have much reason to use any of these. |

Why just through my nose? Once the germs caught a whiff of the garlic, along with the alcohol and hot peppers they would exit through every orifice on my body, that’s why you sauna or hot bath you zap with steam or hot water! They won’t have a chance!

Depends on what you are struggling with most. Dry cough- suppressant although the only one that really works is codiene and you need a prescription; wet cough/chest congestion- drink lots of water and warm beverages to keep the phlegm thin, rub some vapo rub on your chest, avoid milk products/cheese, makes phlegm thick, guaffenisen doesn't really help but you find it in everything; sinus congestion- water and pseudophedrin and tylenol, the new replacement sucks, you'll have to go to the pharmacy to get it the real thing; fever- tylenol; sore throat- rinse with salt and baking soda in water, chloraseptic lozenges or spray, tylenol or ibuprofen. Generic everything is fine. Benadryl might help you sleep, might help dry up some nasal discharge but it will make your phlegm and sinus goo thick which can result in a blockage in your sinuses leading to infection. |

I don't know about any of these. My old experiences with such things is that they either uncomfortably dried me out or made me groggy.
I'd prefer instead tons of vitamin C (orange and grapefruit juices), anti-oxidants (pomegranate and cranberry juices), mint tea, and some facsimile of Cyclone Cider, made from vinegar, garlic, chili, and such.
As far as a runny nose goes, I make nose tampons (coiled pellets made of tissue). They prevent dripping or a need for constant blowing and chafing, and when you remove them your free breathing is generally restored for some time, more than if you had been blowing your nose or drying it out with medicine. |

Don't know. I'd assume they're all pretty much alike and if I had to get a drugstore med I'd probably go with the store brand, being cheaper. I'd rather try a natural remedy like honey and lemon maybe. |

If you take cold medicines, your cold lasts about 7 days.
If you don't take anything, it goes away in about a week. |

I would live on NyQuil and DayQuil when I get sick, so those work ok for me. |
| docgbrown | | posted 15-Dec-2007 3:49am |
Most of the above plus sleep, warmth and fluids |
cloudhugger | | posted 15-Dec-2007 8:07am |
I don't know. It's been years since I've had to use any of those and I think I did the Triaminic. I switched to brands found in the health food store. I used to get sick alot, but since I stopped using the over the counter and pharm stuff, and worked on my gut rather than all symptoms all the time, I rarely get sick. Like that anyway, when I do get sick, it seems to be kinda bad stuff. |

vitamin C in massive doses, zinc, echinacea, whiskey, honey, lemon and broth |

it depends on what works for you, i use the generic brand of the nyquil tabs(dayquil and nyquil). many people now use airbourne or zicam...... i haven't used either and i think they are supposed to be started as soon as you feel the cold is coming on. people i know that have used them....... LOVE them. |

| Amanda | | posted 15-Dec-2007 12:01pm |
I don't think any of them are all that great. If I'm really sick, I use Nyquil. I don't think it makes me feel any better, but it knocks me out so I don't care about being sick. |
| kirst | | posted 15-Dec-2007 2:41pm |
These can only help control your symptoms. Nothing (other than your immune system and time) cures a cold. |
| sexy1 | | posted 15-Dec-2007 3:23pm |
none of them but i have been told that the best medication for the common cold is paracetamol
|
| mrmarm | | posted 15-Dec-2007 5:59pm |
I don't take medicine when I have the cold, I usually just get a cold wet hand towel and rub it against my nose, that really does help. |

Depends on what your symptoms are. I was using Robutossin recently. I didn't feel it helped that much. I like to get DayQuil/NyQuild pack sometimes. |
meowry | | posted 18-Oct-2008 3:53am |
I think it really depends on your body and how it reacts to different drugs. For example, I don't get anything out of Tylenol (seriously!) but my body responds nicely to Aleve. My colds are always bad, and they last long. Vick's doesn't help. And I take Nyquil and Dayquil mostly for sleeping. Out of these OTC medicines, Benedryl is the best for me. |
