| cerealkiller | posted 12-Dec-2007 2:48pm Sale. Never ever have heard it pronounced 'sell'. |
| thecomic22 | posted 12-Dec-2007 3:15pm Either one. |
| LindaH | posted 12-Dec-2007 3:17pm I say 'sale'. I'm from Alaska.
I've heard it pronounced 'sell' but with the intention of saying 'sale'. They weren't using the word 'sell', they just pronounce sale different than most people, because they talk faster. "Eggs are on sell this week." I don't know if that made sense. |
| Enheduanna | posted 12-Dec-2007 3:30pm In that example, I would say sale. I use sell when a verb is appropriate and sale when a noun is. |
| romkey | posted 12-Dec-2007 3:49pm Up for sell??? I hope nobody says that. |
| ausfox | posted 12-Dec-2007 4:24pm Sale. I think that saying 'sell' in that example is incorrect. I'm Australian. |
| llamamama | posted 12-Dec-2007 4:43pm Sale. I'm from South eastern Virginia |

I actually think I pronounce both of these words about the same. |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 12-Dec-2007 8:08pm Depends and i say sell or the home is for sale and I am American |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 12-Dec-2007 10:07pm I say, "The house is up for sale", but I also would say, "Would you sell me your house?". |
| kcthedog | posted 13-Dec-2007 2:27am Do you say sell or sale?
Check I say sale, until I sell it, then it becomes sold! You put something up for sale with the intention of selling it. Sell is the action for having sold something you had for sale! (Sale is the prepositional form of the word leading the action to sell) You could say you are going to sell something ! I am in California USA |
| Melf | posted 13-Dec-2007 7:15am Sale, because it actually makes sense. |
| judgescratch | posted 13-Dec-2007 8:01am Sale. Mid-Atlantic. |
| judgescratch | (reply to LindaH) posted 13-Dec-2007 8:02am Ah, I'll bet you that's it. The question confused me, but this is probably what the SC has experienced. Good catch. |
| icurok | posted 13-Dec-2007 10:29am Sell is a verb. Sale is a noun. You sell a house. You put the house up for sale. If you mix them up, it's either because you have an impenetrable accent or because you fail at English. |
| Biggles | posted 13-Dec-2007 4:18pm I'd say "sale" and I'm in the UK. |
| LJD | posted 13-Dec-2007 5:53pm Sale.......I've lived in the East Bay for 63 years |
| RGirl | posted 13-Dec-2007 10:37pm I say 'for sale'. |
| RGirl | I at first 'heard' it on the internet from some one that lived in California. At first I was like 'How can this person be so intelligent about everything but walk around telling me she was going to put something up for 'sell'. I tried to reason it being a phonics type mishap but she typed it 'sell', repeatedly. I ignored it. I have since then run into this with two other people who I know aren't saying 'sale' but with a funky accent because they are typing 'for sell'. |
| Maarten | posted 14-Dec-2007 10:54am We say: dit huis is te koop. |
| they | posted 14-Dec-2007 8:48pm Sale |
| mrmarm | posted 15-Dec-2007 6:10pm Neither, I'd say this house is sellable and I'm Australian. |
| Iseult | posted 16-Dec-2007 10:37pm Sale.
Sell sounds wrong. I'd laugh if somebody said it. |
| moviesnob | posted 17-Dec-2007 1:36pm Sale |
| Alleycat | posted 23-Dec-2007 7:57am Northeast |
| Zang | posted 27-Dec-2007 10:57pm In that context I would say "up for sale". "Up for sell" is just wrong. |
| Zang | posted 27-Dec-2007 10:59pm Oh yeah, and I'm from Canada where we generally know how to speak proper English. Or French as the case may be... |
