I say 'sale'. I'm from Alaska.
I've heard it pronounced 'sell' but with the intention of saying 'sale'. They weren't using the word 'sell', they just pronounce sale different than most people, because they talk faster. "Eggs are on sell this week."

I don't know if that made sense.

In that example, I would say sale. I use sell when a verb is appropriate and sale when a noun is.

Sale. I think that saying 'sell' in that example is incorrect. I'm Australian.

I say, "The house is up for sale", but I also would say, "Would you sell me your house?".

Do you say sell or sale?

Check I say sale, until I sell it, then it becomes sold! You put something up for sale with the intention of selling it. Sell is the action for having sold something you had for sale!

(Sale is the prepositional form of the word leading the action to sell)

You could say you are going to sell something !

I am in California USA

Ah, I'll bet you that's it. The question confused me, but this is probably what the SC has experienced. Good catch.

Sell is a verb. Sale is a noun. You sell a house. You put the house up for sale. If you mix them up, it's either because you have an impenetrable accent or because you fail at English.

I at first 'heard' it on the internet from some one that lived in California. At first I was like 'How can this person be so intelligent about everything but walk around telling me she was going to put something up for 'sell'. I tried to reason it being a phonics type mishap but she typed it 'sell', repeatedly. I ignored it. I have since then run into this with two other people who I know aren't saying 'sale' but with a funky accent because they are typing 'for sell'.

In that context I would say "up for sale". "Up for sell" is just wrong.

Oh yeah, and I'm from Canada where we generally know how to speak proper English. Or French as the case may be...
