What breed of dog would you say makes a better pet to live inside the home, a Jack Russel Terrier or a Dachshund?

I'm trying to decide which breed would better suit my lifestyle, but I'm having trouble choosing. I want a dog that can do well alone for long periods of time while I'm working. Also, I was curious as to which dog would have the best general disposition, be easier to house train, would be less likely to destroy my house, would not cause harm or distress to my 3 cats who are always coming inside etc. I have no children, I do have mild allergies, I can make time for walks in the evening & at night, but I'm gone most of the day. I like both breeds, but I want to make the best choice.

You don't ever want a Jack Russell if you aren't home alot and especially with 3 cats. They are hyper active dogs and not right choice for you. Dachshund might be better.

The real answer is - don't get a dog, period. What's the point of having one if you're not home all day? It's wrong to make a dog go all day without being able to go potty. And no, I don't believe in having a dog if it's gonna be left outside all the time. Cats either.

I suspect both breeds have issues... Have you considered getting a dog from a local animal shelter, a mutt perhaps?

Jack Russel's are very hyper.

I've known people with both of these breeds and I don't think you can decide based solely on the breed. Both can be excellent pets. It's about the individual dog, how much time and attention you devote to it, how you treat it, etc.

Probably neither and i suppose the Dachshund but I will say my cat is the very best to live with

I would say a Dachshund because I know that Jack Russells are energetic little dogs that require a lot of attention. I don't know for sure about daschunds though, I would do more research.

Not a Jack Russell. They're too active and unless you have a secure and large garden, it would be inappropriate to be out of the house for long periods.

Here's a site that gives you a recommendation on which breed would be suitable:

I've known people who have had both type dogs....and they were wonderful dogs. If it were I to choose, I suppose a Jack Russell...extremely loyal dog. Are you talking about a puppy? With either dog, a puppy will give you "a run for your money." I believe both dogs will do well with cats....just need a little adjusting.

Dachshund. A JRT needs a lot of attention, training, space outdoors and energetic owner. They are a bit hyper, smart, dig and bark and run in circles. They are clowns and have a mind of their own. Dachsies will test your patience less. After puppy hood they calm down and aren't as destructive. I think both are barkers and dachsies may dig too but not like a JRT.

I believe that every creature is as unique as you and I! The breed of dog may have different attributes but the temperament and “personality” of the any dog will be unique. To try and quantify two personalities is in my humble opinion impossible. If you can find a dog that you find an attraction to, you should not be concerned about what breed it is. Consider someone looking for a friend and narrowing the possibilities only to Caucasians and Orientals! They would be limiting the opportunity to be friends to at least two thirds of the rest of the population! Any dog you decide on will love you unconditionally! All the logistics will work themselves out!

Weiner dogs are wonderful lil loves, however one must be aware that they can develop back problems and one should be also cautious/aware of their weight.

Dachshund, a terrior will need to be entertained whether you are there or not.

Terriers are generally fiesty, I believe. I am going to say Dachshund because they have a calmer personality. Jack Russel Terrier, unless I'm mistaking, is a hunting dog, and those dogs have lots of energy and need lots of activities. Locking them up while you're gone might make them rip all your furniture and cause damage.

I've heard that Jack Russel's have a tendency to rip things up. I'm going to be getting an inside dog in the next couple of months, and if I had my pick of breed, I'd get a Corgi. I've heard they are great indoor dogs, and so cute to boot.

This is revealing, do you answer yourself as yourself or as somebody else so you can get an objective opinion?

An objective opinion as to clarification of what I confused myself saying? We'll I'd have to strive to be objective, or I'd just confuse myself even more.

But when you find out what was confusing you was not that hard to figure out, are you blunt and just say to yourself “Snap out of it, get a grip!” * ? *
