| Halo | posted 28-Sep-1999 3:18pm Um.. Ugh.. Then = them It was a type-o.. Although I'm sure there will be quite a few people that'll have something to say about it. |
| they | posted 28-Sep-1999 3:21pm I concentrate on trying not to hiccup, hold my breath, and if that doesn't work, a large gulp of water usually works... Unfortunately, if I get the hiccups once in the day, I will get them several times that day. When I was a kid, a spoonful of sugar worked (no kidding). |
| anonymous | posted 28-Sep-1999 3:22pm Halo: I dunno...I have noticed that the spelling bees seemed to have buzzed elsewhere |
| romkey | posted 28-Sep-1999 3:49pm I hold my breath, but that's not enough. I calm myself and slow my heartrate and try to relax my body. |
| Halo | posted 28-Sep-1999 4:15pm They : I have the same problem. I get them several times during a day-- if i get them at all. I used to squeze my throat.. and that actually works. .. but drinking water always worked the best.. 10 fast sips. |
| presti | posted 28-Sep-1999 4:59pm I hold my breath. It works like a charm for me. |
| mandy | posted 28-Sep-1999 6:26pm I do nothing...they eventually pass.... |
| jjg | posted 28-Sep-1999 6:36pm I wait until they go away on their own accord. |
| Gamera | posted 28-Sep-1999 6:38pm They mostly seem to go away pretty quickly by themselves. |
| Lizabeth | posted 28-Sep-1999 7:03pm I have someone scare me, I hold my breath, I drink water. Whatever happens to work that time. |
| they | posted 28-Sep-1999 7:10pm Halo.. do they hurt your chest? When I get hiccups, they are very painful. |
| Halo | posted 28-Sep-1999 7:44pm They : If I have them long enough they'll hurt. It depends. |
| fooyun | posted 28-Sep-1999 9:37pm Hiccups hurt me every time I hic. |
| SueBee | posted 29-Sep-1999 12:03am Put a paper towel over a glass of water and drink the water through the paper towel. It works wonders! |
| supplicant | posted 29-Sep-1999 12:35am What happened to "I do nothing about it at all"? (which is what I do... or don't do ;)) |
| cpierson | posted 29-Sep-1999 10:08am How about "I wait for them to go away"? |
| Jody | posted 29-Sep-1999 10:51am First I try to drink a glass of water through a straw all at once - with no stopping. If drinking water doesn't work, I try to breathe very deeply and slowly - it seems to settle the diaphragm so the hiccups pass. |
| drdt | posted 29-Sep-1999 6:30pm You need an option for lelle... 'I encourage them to continue.' |
| quark | posted 29-Sep-1999 8:13pm A tablespoon of white sugar taken straight. You are allowed to chase it with water after you've tried to swallow it several times (a good effort). It's rarely failed. |
| Guthrie | posted 30-Sep-1999 9:52am They: My hiccups are often extremely loud and dreadfully painful. They are known in my circle of friends as the Hurty-Hiccups. |
| jonathan | posted 30-Sep-1999 11:15am I got hiccups the very night I answered the original survey. Coincidence? |
| Wicksy | posted 30-Sep-1999 12:01pm JONATHAN: That, my friend is the Wicksy curse!! |
| romkey | posted 1-Oct-1999 1:07am I've had heartburn every night since the cheese whiz survey. |
| laurel | posted 1-Oct-1999 5:54pm My mom used to give us a teaspoon full of sugar when we got the hiccups. It usually worked (and still seems to). She said it had something to with the granularity of the sugar. I now think it had/has something to do with the power of suggestion. |
| yorricks | posted 1-Oct-1999 10:07pm take one healthy dose of vinegar mixed with sugar...stir with stainless steel spoon...drink it down with the handle of the spoon under your tongue... |
| seven | posted 2-Oct-1999 12:22pm One carefully-measured dose of placebo works every time |
| Katea | posted 3-Oct-1999 5:11am Apparently sucking a slice of lemon stops hiccups. |
| yorricks | posted 3-Oct-1999 9:58am I'm beginning to think the cure is worse than the disease...Vive la hiccups |
| romkey | posted 4-Oct-1999 9:16am yorricks - are you sure that's meant to cure hiccups and not induce vomiting? |
| drdt | posted 4-Oct-1999 12:27pm romkey: I think thinking about how horrific the cure is will cure you right off. 'Doctor, why did that nun pass out?' 'I told her she was pregnant.' 'Oh, my! Was she?' 'Of course not, but it cured her hiccups.' |
| Resy | posted 6-Oct-1999 7:18pm I just ignore them and they get bored and go away. |
| magbast | posted 11-Oct-1999 12:19am i can't seem to shake 'em once they get started |
| Oscar | posted 11-Oct-1999 5:58pm I hold my breath, plug my nose, plug my ears, close my eyes, and swallow. |
| yorricks | posted 12-Oct-1999 6:06pm romkey: No, its for the hiccups I got it directly from an old wife. I'm getting strangely inspired to write a little hiccup ditty to the tune of "Love Potion #9" I hold my breath, I plug my nose, I pull my uvula. I need to get some sleep. |
| Maarten | posted 12-Oct-1999 11:36pm Do nothing and wait till it's over. |
| SueBee | posted 13-Oct-1999 11:42pm Oscar - How many hands do you have?! |
| supplicant | posted 15-Oct-1999 3:22am SueBee: dunno about you but I don't need hands to do that... just air and pressure :) |
| Avocado | posted 22-Oct-1999 8:57pm Lemon juice! Put some lemon juice on your tongue and the hiccups go away :) But alas, this tends to be difficult when not at home. 2nd choice, holding my breath for a few counts. |
| Mariah | posted 28-Oct-1999 2:46am You have to try and reprogram your breathing or whatever. |
| Mariah | posted 28-Oct-1999 2:48am I heard a spoonful of peanut butter was supposed to work too |
| Oscar | posted 1-Nov-1999 12:47pm Only two hands. I plug my ears with my first fingers and my nose with my pinkies. |
| SueBee | posted 2-Nov-1999 1:02am Wow, that does work! I can cover my eyes at the same time, kind of like one of those little monkeys. See no evil, hear no evil, smell no evil? |
| mandy | posted 2-Nov-1999 1:37am Is THAT what you were doing???? I thought you were trying to block out the noise of the rats drinking out of their water bottle!!!! |
| Wicksy | posted 2-Nov-1999 5:12am slit my throat...the hiccups always seem to stop! |
| ILJ | posted 10-Nov-1999 1:36pm I take a deep breath and hold it, put my head between my legs, and push moderately (not hard enough to blow a blood vessel). Even if I keep hiccuping I don't stop (I've heard that you need to start over if you hiccup while holding your breath) until either the hiccups stop or I can't hold it any longer. I rarely have to do it a second time and I've never had to do it a third. |
| natsim | posted 27-Nov-1999 2:22pm I drink water with my ears blocked (using my fingers) and drink from the opposite side of the glass to usual. |
| Wicksy | posted 28-Nov-1999 12:13am have sex....it works every time |

| magbast | posted 2-Dec-1999 10:08pm oh my...wicksy, your mum is sooo fat..the dog has to iron her pants on the driveway... |
| magbast | posted 2-Dec-1999 10:09pm your mum is so fat, she went to sears...said, "show me something in my size!"...they took the dog to the drapes... |

| ILJ | posted 30-Mar-2000 2:43pm hammerme: Oh sure, that's your answer for everything. |
| LindaH | posted 25-Jul-2008 2:55am I drink hot tea. I can actually feel it go down uncomfortably (tightening) and then everything in there gets all warm and relaxed and it stops the hiccups. I have no idea how it works or what exactly is going on. |
