| EyesOfCharisma | posted 10-Oct-2007 5:39pm both, I always say thank you |
| LindaH | posted 10-Oct-2007 5:47pm Neither. People should say what they feel like saying, and shouldn't expect such pointless extensions as 'courtesy words' from other people. There are enough "shoulds" as there is without making an issue over what people should and shouldn't utter in passing. |
| moviesnob | posted 10-Oct-2007 6:28pm In a perfect world, both. The cashier should ALWAYS say thank you. It is polite for the consumer to say it as well, but not necessary. |
| Galomorro | posted 10-Oct-2007 7:06pm Both I suppose. It's kind of automatic. |
| MacGregor | posted 10-Oct-2007 7:32pm Cashier |
| CarlHalling | posted 10-Oct-2007 9:03pm Both is best; but I guess it's more important for the cashier to say it. |
| ultamate | posted 10-Oct-2007 9:03pm You should always say thank you out of respect no matter if you're the customer or the cashier. And if you're going out to eat you better be polite unless you like eating food that's been spit in. |

"Thank you" "Oh no, thank you." |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 10-Oct-2007 10:31pm Both. Common courtesy is for everyone. |
| Melf | posted 11-Oct-2007 1:51am Both? My usual transaction with a cashier goes thusly:
Me *Walks up to counter*: A'igh'? [My very mumbled greeting] Cashier smiles, scans things and whatnot. I fumble with money. Cashier: That's £15.99, please. *Hands over money* Cashier does the change thing. *Takes bag and from cashier* Cashier: Your receipt is in the bag. Me: Thanks. *Runs away screaming at so much social contact* |
| mrmarm | posted 11-Oct-2007 3:07am It's more the principal of the thank you the customer says thank you in a sign of approval to successful transaction and the cashier for being so patient, I think some thing like that has to happen, it's all etiquette. |
| Biggles | posted 11-Oct-2007 5:48am Both. |
| romkey | posted 11-Oct-2007 9:14am Anyone who appreciates something someone else has done for them should thank them. I'd hope that when you buy something at a store, both parties would appreciate the transaction. |
| bill | posted 11-Oct-2007 9:26am I dislike the word "should". But, I think it's probably best for everyone to be saying thank you, all the time, just to be safe. Thank you. |
| Lahdee | posted 11-Oct-2007 9:37am I wonder why some people hate the word "thanks". I've noticed that, and that's what I have always said. |

| LJD | posted 12-Oct-2007 2:20am Primarily I'd say the Cashier.... |
| Amanda | posted 12-Oct-2007 9:57am Both. Neither. Either.
I think it's nice for a cashier to say thank you, but it really loses it's meaning after they say it 500 times a day. As a consumer, I say thank you a lot. It's just in my nature. I'm a nice person. (Hard to believe, I know!) |
| Amanda | (reply to LJD) posted 12-Oct-2007 10:00am I haven't noticed you around lately. Where've you been hiding? |

Where ya been!? |
| LJD | (reply to Amanda) posted 20-Oct-2007 2:30pm I had surgery on an umbilical hernia....the beginning of October, and been told to take it easy until 11-14...which I didn't do, and it took the wind out of me. The second week after surgery, I sat for 9 hours through Drama presentations with my granddaughter and her class...I was a designated driver, (promised before hand) and then sat the rest of the day...sitting for long periods of time is not good for me...so I've been laying off being on the computer. I have to wear this big binder like girdle...been driving me up the wall.
I must warn all peoples, if you go into the hospital for any surgeries, please scrub down for two days, the night before and morning of your surgery, with the scrubbing soaps the doctor will give you, and wash your bed linens, and nightclothes in hot water the night before. I understand there is a staph issue now with the hospitals. My sister-in-law is a nurse, called me up and asked that I keep an eye on my temperature, and surgery dressing. She said there has been deaths. It was in the newspapers, warning of the staph infections. Of course, cleanliness counts, I was very impressed with my doctor and his awareness. While waiting in the pre-op room, they even having heavy paper gowns, that have warm air pumped into the gowns, for the patient's comfort...they've come a long way. |
| LJD | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 20-Oct-2007 2:48pm Thank you for asking....I've been incapacitated from an umbilical hernia surgery. May I suggest to all if you have any signs of an umbilical hernia, take care of it early, do not wait until it becomes too large, or there is a danger of intestinal strangulation which can cause serious problems, perhaps death. Mine became large, and have an incision of about 4". What scared me into the surgery (which I try to avoid doctors and hospitals) was my friend Bob, that had just come from a 45 day stay in the hospital, lost a lb. a day, was within hours of death because the intestine became strangulated. Bob let his hernia go until it was the size of a grapefruit...almost killed him. All he had was water and ice chips for 45 days. He lives in England...I know the hospitals wouldn't keep a patient here for 45 days.
Sorry I didn't mean to ramble...just asking people to be aware. |
| Lahdee | posted 20-Oct-2007 3:04pm Aaron has staph right now. I got it when I had him-over a year and a half ago, and we've been fighting it off and on in our family ever since. There's stuff you can use BEFORE surgeries to better prevent you from getting staph. Why don't they tell you these things? Staph is going around in schools now. Shreveport is having a problem, and in Virginia (?) they closed down a school and cleaned everything. Not going to help much if kids still have it and go to school with sores. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to LJD) posted 20-Oct-2007 4:01pm Thanks, and take care. |
