By law, can the authorities get into your email?

Say, for example, you killed yourself. Could the cops or whoever accesses your email to see if someone threatened you or discover if somehow you maybe did not do your own self in? Can they use what they find?

I don't know if they can just access it if they want to. They probably need a court order first.

I dont know, doesn't it vary country to country etc? But I am wondering could they for example get Yahoo/google to let them look at their servers? I mean YOUR email isn't stored on your computer per se?

Like most things, I assume they would have to get permission from my family or get a warrant from a judge. Assuming the latter, they would need probable cause that the emails are part of some crime. Given the situation, if they had some evidence that I was murdered and not just a suicide.

I was once contacted by a police detective who was investigating the apparent suicide of a kid who had used GameTZ. He was looking for information about when the kid has been on my site. I told him. He was just making sure there was no foul play (that it truly was a suicide). He said he hadn't found any evidence otherwise and was going to close the case as a suicide.

no, i would think not unless they have probable cause of some sort or your family asks them to look.

I don't know, but I'd imagine they would be able to. Cop shows do it all the time! *smile*

I'm pretty sure that they can legally access my emails if they have any reason to think that I might be involved in criminal activities. I'm pretty sure they also monitor emails for key words as well, without reading the whole content.

Don't know, but suspect it would take a court order to do this?

With a search warrant, yes.
