Only as a juror. |

Didn't have proof of insurance when I had an accident that wasn't my fault. I just had to go and show the judge that I did in fact have insurance at the time, just not proof. That is it and it doesn't amazingly ridiculous, just slightly ridiculous. |

I've been to court as a juror & to testify as well. The latter was when I worked for the custody (bail) referee at the Lane County Jail. Part of my job was filling out bail forms with incoming misdeameanor & felony inmates & then setting their bail according to how certain questions were answered. We didn't set bail for those arrested for murder as that was done by a judge during their first court appearance & people in on fugitive warrants (usually from another state) couldn't be bailed out. They were stuck in jail until the other state extradited them. |

I've only been in court a couple of times.
The first time was traffic court and I was just watching my buddy try to weasel out of a perfectly legitimate fine for failing to produce his license. He did manage to make everyone in the court laugh, so I'll give him credit for that.
The other time I was the person who, when the judge asks who is going to be taking responsibility for the minor (who had been previously convicted and served his time) to allow him to leave jail (well, juvenile hall, or whatever), stood up and said "That would be me." and then had to sign papers and stuff. That was for work. |

Never been to court. I've been accosted, confronted and such for ridiculous reasons, though. I've seen other people in court for dumb reasons. |

Yes, this past summer. Two days after I got back from Germany I had to go to court because..some girl ''got slammed into a filing cabinet"...that part is in quotes because it is a lie.
I had to wake up early..I was so incredibly jet lagged..and I didn't even have to testify. |

I've been to court only once to watch someone's arraigment. I won't go into details. It was semi-ligitimate. |

I was 17... new to driving... but in this case, I still don't believe I did anything wrong. I was driving the speed limit on a main residential road (35).... actually, I was probably going a little slower, as it was raining... and that road has some bends in it.
As I came around one of the bends, a school bus driving the other direction stopped to pick up a kid who was standing on the side of the road. I had two choices... hit the brakes and risk a slide off the road into the kid or the bus... or keep going past the bus's stop sign and be done with it. I made a split decision. Maybe I wouldn't have slid considering my speed.... but I didn't want to risk it.
I continued on to school.... and a few hours later, the pricipal came and pulled me from class so that I could talk to an officer. He wrote me a ticket and I went to court.
Nervous as hell, I went up before the judge and explained all of this to her. She agreed with me and dismissed the case.
That's the only time I've ever been to court. |

I used to work for a video retailer in Jackson, MS. The store I worked in had been in the mall for almost 10 years. I had been the manager for about 6-8 months when this occured. One day the new mall manager came in, upset because of the positioning of our adult dvds we sold. She's been the manager a couple of months at this point. The adult DVD's consisited of playboy and Girls Gone Wild dvd's, the kind of stuff you can find on late night Showtime and HBO. It was deemed "unrated" and was not "X" rated videos. We had the merchandise down an aisle straight from the counter (we had a clear view of it from the register this way, as it was the most stolen-from section in the store). The worry was that it was catty-corner to anime merchandise, which several youngsters may look at. It was also directly across from our Used DVD's (Anime and Used being the next most pilfered from sections in the store). We moved the merchandise as requested.
A couple of days later, the mall manager comes in with her regional manager. They go straight to the mature section, looking at it and commenting on it. The regional manager asks me if we check ID (18 and over), which we do. Our retail chain has no specific rule making us check ID, as the material is not X rated, but we obviously do as a courtesy. The regional manager says they are trying hard to get this kind of merchandise out of their malls. I ask, "Why haven't you tried any time in the past 10 years that the store has been here?" Well, a new owner just bought out the mall, and they do not care for it. They are also cracking down on Spencers. My response was "Are you telling me you work with malls for a living, and you did not know what kind of merchandise Spencers carried?" (Spenders is a novelty gift store, many of the gifts are very adult-themed). The mall manager tells me she has a file on my store of complaints they have received about the merchandise. In the months I've been a manager, I had never had a customer come up to me and complain about the section. We always kept it covered and ran any youngsters out of the section. I ask her if any of the complaints are recent - she says yes. I tell her I find it very hard to believe that someone would have a complaint about that kind of issue in the store, and they would go to mall management instead of complaining first to the manager of the store itself (none of my managers on staff had had complaints).
Cut to a week or so later. It's a pretty busy night for a weekday, and a kid comes in and I sell him a Girls Gone Wild dvd. Completely blows my mind to check ID. Of course, he is working with 2 undercover cops who then come in and give me a ticket and a court date.
Yes, I screwed up and did not check ID. But UNDERCOVER COPS??? For a Girls Gone Wild DVD? Nice.
Since the company did not have a rule to check ID, I did not break company policy in not checking it, so they paid for my lawyer. The DA said this was the first time he'd encountered this kind of a citation. The charges were dropped, as my store was closing down anyway and I was soon moving out of state.
Anytime I want to make myself angry, I think of that dogy-new-trying-to-make-a-name-for-herself mall manager. IMO, completely ridiculous. |
