| drdt | posted 16-Sep-1999 1:05pm Jeans: from the jeans store. Shoes and socks: from the shoes and socks store. Button down shirts: from the button-down-shirt store. T-shirts: at events where they sell T-shirts as souvenirs. I used to get jeans from the Army-Navy store but they stopped selling them (and the storekeeper actually told me to start buying clothes at a clothing store) |

| bill | posted 17-Sep-1999 7:56am Twister, *ahem*, don't you mean "pleasantly plump"? |
| North79 | posted 17-Sep-1999 3:36pm I work for a major sportswear company so I get more than 2/3 of my clothing from them at a huge discount. |
| mandy | posted 17-Sep-1999 7:12pm nope :( I'm having a bad body day! |
| they | posted 18-Sep-1999 1:07pm Mostly thrift stores, Kmart, Walmart, and Sears... Maternity clothes are very expensive and you get them where you can find them. |
| mandy | posted 18-Sep-1999 2:46pm they....and I found that most maternity clothes...look....stupid. Has there been any improvement since 1989? |
| Jane | posted 18-Sep-1999 3:18pm lets see...Gap, American Eagle, Express, J. Crew, and Old Navy. I'm a preppy little brand names girl. |
| they | posted 18-Sep-1999 7:18pm mandy... yes.. Kmart had some really cute things, I couldn't believe it. I think the part about maternity clothes that looked stupid is that they had big ugly designs on them or a seam going around right underneath the bust... Now they are made without the seam and in solid colors... some of the ones I got have stripes though... I love em. |
| mandy | posted 18-Sep-1999 11:45pm KEWL! I never wore maternity clothes...I actually only gained 17 pounds during my pregnancy so I just wore my regular ...stretchy..clothes. |
| SueBee | posted 19-Sep-1999 3:58pm Eddie Bauer is my favorite store. I love their jeans and sweatshirts. I will probably order from their website next time, instead of the catalog. |
| bill | posted 19-Sep-1999 9:05pm Jane - at least you're aware. |
| kristalynn | posted 19-Sep-1999 9:15pm I get them from on-line or catalogs or hot topic, rag stock, cats meow or wherever i find clothes i like. |
| jcdino | posted 21-Sep-1999 10:03pm Preferably as gifts. That way I don't have to shop for them. Good thing my family and friends have good taste :) |

| Resy | posted 15-Oct-1999 3:58pm mandy - there used to be a line of clothing put out by JC Penny called "BBW" it stood for "Big Beautiful Woman" but we used to call it "Big Butts and Boobs" and just left of the "w" .... |
| mandy | posted 17-Oct-1999 4:41pm hehehe |
| Mariah | posted 29-Oct-1999 4:26pm Wal-Mart actually has some really cute stuff now. I was pleasantly surprised at the amount of nice stuff I could get for $40 there. We'll just have to wait and see how well they hold up in the wash. |
| mandy | posted 30-Oct-1999 5:14pm I went to Lane Bryant Last night. Everything I tried on was to big. My SO kept saying, "Try a smaller size." I was in denial. "No...those won't fit!!!!" I kept saying. I gave in and tried on the smallest size they carry. They fit with room to spare.... I cried. As much as I despised all that extra weight...there is a part of me resisting. What if I lose all of it, reach my goal, and I'm not happy. I don't remember what it was like to be thin. I'm frightened. Why? And, where do I shop now? |
| SueBee | posted 31-Oct-1999 3:28am Anywhere you want, Babe! |
| mandy | posted 31-Oct-1999 3:03pm Not only that...the quality is superb. I am very sad. :( They finally have clothing for large women that doesn't look like some granny moo moo thingy and I have to go and lose weight! What the hell was I thinking! |
| Avocado | posted 6-Nov-1999 8:03pm I do wish that Lane Bryant would picture more heavy women in their catalogue photos. Their main customer base is not tall slender women, I'd wager... I'm bummed at how hard it is to find cool clothes in a wide petite. Sometimes I think that it's almost a blessing in disguise that I'm heavy, b/c were I of more slender build I'd want to buy more cool clothes than I could afford! But, the thing I dislike most about being heavy is not being able to find lots of cool clothes. I enjoy clothing swaps... I also like thrift stores; easier to find things in real-person sizes there. |
| they | posted 6-Nov-1999 8:10pm Avocado: A friend and I were discussing the Lane Bryant models one day and I called their cust. service number and asked about it. The woman told me that they had put out a catalog with heavy women and one with thin women.. and the thin one sold more clothes. I guess they think people will think the clothes will make them look thinner? |
| Avocado | posted 7-Nov-1999 8:04am they - Thanks for the info - and cool that you asked! I think I'll call or write them, too. I guess it's nice that they tried this out... though I wish they'd give options for people to choose which catalogue they want instead of discontinuing the heavy womens' one altogether. I'm *less* likely to buy from the tall thin womens' catalogue, because I know from long experience that those clothes are not going to look the same on me. I'd rather see what the clothes really *will* look like on me. I dislike the message that they give - "We're selling clothes for your size - but we don't trust enough that someone like you could actually look good in them to show this in our catalogues. Your size should have pretty clothing options - but the tall thin model type is still really the standard." I mean, there *are* plenty of people who are both heavy and nice-looking out there, who could be models for this! I'd even be happy if they used people who were simply "pleasantly plump," though it would be good for them to show very heavy people too. Sigh - they have so much hype about "finally, clothing made for *you*" - but the ads say otherwise. Like we should be grateful enough simply to find clothes that we can fit into... |
| lelle | posted 8-Nov-1999 6:29pm Avocado: The new Lane Bryant advertising (not the catalogue company, the retail shops) uses Camryn Mannheim as their main model. The advertising booklet I got in the mail even had appropriately-sized models in lingerie -- as in black stockings, suspender belt, bra and panty. I have to admit I was impressed. :) |
| mandy | posted 8-Nov-1999 6:58pm Lane Bryant the store...and Lane Bryant the catalog are actually separate entities. |
| Avocado | posted 9-Nov-1999 3:10am lelle - That is cool! :) I'll have to check it out. |
| ILJ | posted 10-Nov-1999 4:49pm Department stores if they have my size, which is a hit-and-miss proposition at best. |
| natsim | posted 23-Nov-1999 2:08pm What about second-hand from friends? I know, you'd think that I would have stopped wearing hand-me-downs by now, but some people have fabulous stuff that they never wear. I have a good friend and relatives who give me great retro clothes! |
| gilly | posted 23-Nov-1999 2:23pm I got some great hand-me-down business suits from my boss, and my little sister gives me hand-me-ups all the time. |
