Is hip-hop dead/dying?

With all these new "snap" songs getting airplay, rappers flaunting their wealth every chance they get, and rap lyrics full of violence and misogyny, has the true meaning of hip-hop been forgotten?

I don't think so. Its not any different than heavy metal in the 80's. Ok, maybe the positive message is sort of dying, but theres still rappers out there who aren't rapping about partying and money.

There's all kinds of hip hop. The wealth and bling is part of it. They are born, rise up then switch to producing or doing something else with their new found wealth a lot of the time. For a lot of rappers their intensity was borne of their poverty, without it their raps aren't the same.
It depends on what kind of hip hop you like. All rap isn't hip hop.

no, maybe just leveling off........... i don't think most of the really popular songs have ANY message anymore or anything worth saying which i thought was suppose to be the draw of hip hop. but i probably don't listen to it enough to have an opinion!

No. Judging from the noise I can hear coming from cars, portable CD players, and iPod-type players turned up loud enough so the whole bus can hear.

No, you still have The Diplomats and Dizzee Rascal going strong. Reading these answers... I never knew SC was so exclusive. It's not at all all bling and whatnot.

I think I only got into hip hop just as Emo music was coming in and hip hop was dieing, I like hip hop, but I don't get completely rapped up in the dog slap ho slut whore scene of it. I'm generally on the border line between liking hip hop and R& B, anyone yes, but mainly because of the Emo hype too. I don't think most people stayed under the hypnosis of bling bling and instead became entranced by the black make up.

I prefer the YingYang twins, but I've only heard two of their songs but they were really good, I like the black eyed peas, but they've generally always borderlined into R&B and with Fergies separation she pretty much sent it that way, Rick Ross is okay same with Ken Hell.

It hasn't been forgotten, but there's no doubt mainstream hip-hop is moving towards less meaningful songs.

*shrugs* ..... I put other, I dont even know what the EXACT difference is between hip/hop & Rap is (yeah I know one has loads of talking in it) but the beats are very much the same and I do like some of the stuff, but to be honest this is normally because the Rap/hip/hop artist is covering a song I already like.

Like DMX's "Aint No sunshine" ...... which is a cover of Bill Whithers classic

If you took the words:

Nigga, Killed, nine/9mm, Ho, doges, driving, Bentley, homies

out of the average Rap/hip/hop song you'd be left with about 4 minutes of Silence, interjected with the odd "Uhhuh"

That's generally extreme hardcore hip hop, there are different varieties of hip hop and different standards of what hip hop is.

Something like that, R&B notwithstanding. Then again, do the same thing with emo except make the words "suicide, slit my wrists, love sucks and you would be left with about 4 minutes of silence interjected with sighs of despair. Do the same thing with Pop love songs and take out the words "baby" and you won't be left with much. Then take heavy metal and take out the words "sex, drugs, rock and roll, party" and see what you're left with.

Yeah, I like most of them, but small doses. It is a trend towards something new, which is a bonus. This will lead to better music as trends seem to go. It seems like the beginning of a decade, the music is still from the last decade, but struggling with minimally new experience. Than the middle of the decade is boring, with a few reaching out into something very new, but misunderstood. Those are some of the bands that self combust. At the end of the decade is some of the better stuff that comes out. At least this was the case for the past 40 years, I haven't been into music much at all these last few years. I hear some new stuff, and than I can't find them until I see they are still out there. A band has to continually shift and change or they become stagnant and left behind.

Like half way through last year, will she didn't really leave more take and rename, but apparently at the end of the year they're going to reform the black eyed since Fergie wants Will.i.am to take over again or something. I love the songs Bojangles and Dangerous that Ying Yang twins sing, you?
mrmarm
(reply to cloudhugger) posted 3-Sep-2007 6:20pm
Yeah, but apparently that the end of the year the black eyed peas are getting back together to reform the black eyed peas, so I see what you mean the band a change and then change back seen newer and different. I guess it's kind of like the Emo hype it'll wear down eventually but still be successful to it's devoted fans that stick to it.

Sometimes a band goes through something completely different style. It either kills them or makes them stronger. Look at the Stones....unbelievable how freaking old they are, yet they keep coming up with new stuff. For a while there, they were living on thier legend and they were going downhill, so it may be the new songs, or people show up to see their concerts because it is like a freak show. (gawd they are soooo old * laughing out loud * )

wait a minute...she's not old......she is only a few years older than me squirt....The differance I see right away on that, is she is not doing the same thing she did twenty years ago. she evolved, made career mistakes but bounded back. She probably wouldn't think any of them were mistakes, she is a busines genious. I do admire her tenacity.

Well, back in the day (and this was before your and my time), hip hop was about things that are not smacking hoes, cheddar (aka personal wealth), and running shoes. It was a music trying to raise awareness towards many black related issues, like the racism and living conditions, among many other things. PE might be disgraced nowadays with Flavor Flave running around and trying to bone everything that walks, but their old work is very distinguished.
