| darkshadowsseeker | posted 25-Aug-2007 7:22pm I don't really have emergency supplies because we seldom lose power due to storms. It's been many years since that last happened since we don't get hit by storms like the people in the Midwest, on the East Coast & in areas like Texas & Florida. The last time we lost power was for about 2 hours when a squirrel got fried in the electric substation about 6-8 blocks from our home. However, this was during the day, so it wasn't that big of a deal. I do keep some candles & candle holders on the coat closet shelf in the dining room, but that's about it. If I was living in Iowa (where I was born), I'd probably have a storm kit at the ready because Iowa has been known to get blizzards, tornadoes & flooding. |
| Enheduanna | posted 25-Aug-2007 7:45pm I'm ready, although I'm also not really worried about it. |
| RGirl | posted 25-Aug-2007 7:47pm We're ready. I have a flash light in most rooms, batteries, candles, matches are in one area. Bottled water in the fridge. |
| Otter | posted 25-Aug-2007 7:56pm I don't have a generator, but other than that I'm ready. |
| iamdonte | posted 25-Aug-2007 10:41pm I lived in Louisiana far too long not to have emergency supplies year round...batteries, candles, flashlights, battery operated tv and radio, MRE's, firewood (for winter storms), paper goods, etc are all in a storage box and ready to be brought out at any given time. |

| Biggles | posted 26-Aug-2007 9:45am I don't personally have any emergency supplies. I'm currently staying with my parents though and they have loads of bottled water stowed away and could find candles, matches etc if they needed. They also have a (bad) wind-up radio/torch and a (fairly dim) solar powered light. They also have a gas cooker - so if the electricity goes off, but not the gas, they can still cook. They were left without any power for several days a few weeks ago when there were some pretty dramatic floods here (people died - completely unheard of where it happened). They coped okay, but the one thing I think that would have come in handy that they didn't have would have been a wind-up or solar powered mobile phone recharger.
Having seen how easily my parents got cut-off in a major city, I shall definitely think more seriously about having an emergency kit when I move out again in a few weeks. I'd probably make sure I had some bottled water (but I wouldn't be able to store very much), a wind-up torch, a wind-up radio, candles, matches, basic first-aid kit, and a mobile phone recharger that doesn't rely on mains electricity. |
| Iseult | posted 26-Aug-2007 12:11pm I don't have any. |
| cloudhugger | posted 26-Aug-2007 12:41pm Most of it gets done during a storm. I add to it, and than when the next storm hits, I'll add to it again.
I had everything neccesary, fully prepared at my house. Since we have been to the new house, we've talked about it, and where it needs to be, but every storm that comes by now, it's getting harder and harder to find flashlite. There is a flashlite gremlin here, it ate about 3 or 4 flashlites so far. I have resorted to camping lights, they are much better than candles, and I have several candles for emergency. Our electricity goes out when a cloud sneezes on a transformer around here, so I have practice at this. at my old house, new house...different story. |
| Melf | (reply to Biggles) posted 26-Aug-2007 6:08pm You'll need a baseball bat and some bin liners if you want to get some decent looting done too. |
| Biggles | (reply to Melf) posted 26-Aug-2007 8:22pm And a boat of some kind (if there's flooding) so you can be the first to arrive anywhere with potential loot... |
| gambler | posted 26-Aug-2007 8:30pm Before the big storm hit, I was ready..............stocked up couple of days before |

| Galomorro | posted 27-Aug-2007 12:33pm I know I should, etc. Usually I have plenty of candles and matches if the electricity goes out (and it's safe to light candles), but no flashlight nor batteries. Two bottles of water I got free someplace. That's it. We don't have huge storms that cause this much trouble here though. |
| cerealkiller | posted 27-Aug-2007 3:06pm "When" did I? Awkwardly presented question. Should maybe have asked "Do you have emergency supplies?" |
| they | posted 29-Aug-2007 10:44pm We could make it.... but it's not all in a tidy little emergency area. |
| moviesnob | posted 6-Sep-2007 1:10pm Usually I worry about an issue like this when I know a storm is on the way. I used to live in Louisiana and Mississippi and went through this many times. Now I live in Minnesota, but still have to be prepped for blizzards up here. |
| Zang | posted 8-Sep-2007 9:47pm No. I have candles handy. I can reach four of them from where I'm sitting. If I really need anything else, I can always go over to the store across the street. |

| LindaH | posted 16-Sep-2007 12:53pm We get them together, but they get messed with, played in, shuffled through, borrowed from, and the whole set is rendered pretty much useless. I'd keep emergency supplies if I could keep everyone out of them unless there's a real emergency. |
| Enigma | posted 22-Sep-2007 6:49pm Before the storm hit, I was ready. |
| Amanda | posted 4-Oct-2007 7:36pm I have emergency supplies? I wonder where I keep them. I think I do have a flashlight or two around here somewhere. Whether the batteries work or not, I have no idea. There's also some smell good candles that I could use for light if I needed to. Other than that, I guess we'll just deal with it. It'll be fine.
I forgot about the generator. There's no gas in it and I don't think there's any gas in the gas can. So, I guess it'd be pretty useless. |
