| Melf | posted 23-Aug-2007 6:43pm Yes. The pronounciation is much harder at first; French flows much more easily; the grammar is more confusing; there are no tangible differences between der, die, and das unlike in French ('e's at the end of words and so on). |
| Galomorro | posted 23-Aug-2007 7:27pm No language is easier or harder than any other, especially if you're lucky enough to be introduced to two or more languages as a baby or toddler. I think learning another language is especially difficult for adults. |
| Enigma | posted 23-Aug-2007 7:38pm My mother spoke German, Russian and English as well as her mother tongue. She told me German was similar to English but English was harder to learn because a lot of the rules didn't make sense.
I speak nothing but English (unfortunately). |
| Enheduanna | posted 23-Aug-2007 7:56pm Yes, at least it was for me. I think it has a much more complicated syntactic structure than Romance languages. Plus, it has things that English doesn't have, like case for nouns and adjectives. |
| mrmarm | posted 23-Aug-2007 9:48pm I used to learn german, I guess it's easy considering there are complex languages such as chinese and the words aren't that beyond similiarity to english words. |
| ausfox | posted 23-Aug-2007 10:18pm I don't know |
| llamamama | posted 23-Aug-2007 10:18pm No...it's not harder or easier. Some aspects of it are easier than say..spanish. But..unless you've taken German..you can't really judge. It wasn't that tough all things considered. |
| llamamama | (reply to Melf) posted 23-Aug-2007 10:20pm yes there is..the nouns end differently. |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 23-Aug-2007 10:45pm I do not know and besides I speak only one language english |
| Maarten | posted 24-Aug-2007 1:41am Nein, not too difficult. |
| Melf | (reply to llamamama) posted 24-Aug-2007 2:48am Maybe I was answering 'Is German 'hard' to learn with a crapty teacher?'... we never got told that |
| mve17 | posted 24-Aug-2007 7:26am Nein!! |
| Biggles | posted 24-Aug-2007 8:34am I've never had the opportunity to learn it, but I was under the impression that it was easier for English speakers to learn languages with a Germanic-base than the Romance languages, because the grammar is more similar, and many of the words sound very much the same. English has been hugely influenced by Norman French, but as I understand it, the root is essentially Germanic. But I've only ever studied French properly, so I really don't know |
| llamamama | (reply to Melf) posted 24-Aug-2007 8:38am Oh, well..they do. Like, die ones usually end with an e..and I think der is usually r..or something..I was never good at grammar and my german teacher never knew how to explain it..(he was german..well, he still is) |
| bill | posted 24-Aug-2007 9:02am I would assume it's easier because English has more in common with German than romance languages. |
| Irene007 | posted 24-Aug-2007 9:29am I don't think so - the origin of the language is the same as English while Spanish and French are of Latin origin. |
| Melf | (reply to llamamama) posted 24-Aug-2007 10:20am Hehe... thanks |
| EyesOfCharisma | posted 24-Aug-2007 10:32am I don't know... haven't tried learning it |
| paulyw | posted 24-Aug-2007 11:34am I really do not want to know German. |
| Iseult | posted 24-Aug-2007 1:22pm I personally had an easier time with French. But I found German much easier to comprehend, while French I can barely catch few words if they're spoken on their own. I had no experience with Spanish. |
| cerealkiller | posted 24-Aug-2007 1:25pm How would I know? I took French in high school but remember none of it. Would think Russian would be harder than the others. |
| thecomic22 | posted 24-Aug-2007 1:44pm I dunno. |
| Crayons | posted 24-Aug-2007 3:44pm Well, since I've been slightly exposed to Spanish in school and a little at home because my mom's Puerto-Rican, and also because Spanish is easy to read for the most part, i would say Spanish is easier. I tried French once on a computer program at school, but the audio all sounded hard to say. A teacher of mine taught us some German, which is very close to English, but it has a few intimidating noises and that weird letter too, so I'm not sure. But I'd say Spanish. |
| cloudhugger | posted 24-Aug-2007 6:26pm Yes, it is. I grew up listening to it. I take the class and find out it had nothing to do with the 'slang' my mom grew up on. With bits of russian thrown in for good measure. I took two years and I still have no clue. It was very hard, but I have to say that my teacher kinda sucked at being a teacher. I hope she doesn't see this, she was really nice. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to Enigma) posted 24-Aug-2007 6:28pm I'm wondering if your mom was related to my dad. I am much like my dad, are you your mother's daughter? |
| llamamama | (reply to Melf) posted 24-Aug-2007 7:58pm |
| docgbrown | posted 24-Aug-2007 11:03pm I donno, since I haven't tried learning them |
| Enigma | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 25-Aug-2007 12:41am Very much so. |
| ihatespiders | posted 25-Aug-2007 2:30am I had trouble pronouncing some of the words. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to Enigma) posted 25-Aug-2007 3:35am oooOOOOooooo spooky. |
| Melf | (reply to llamamama) posted 25-Aug-2007 3:55am WOohoo for Germans who break the mold! |
| llamamama | (reply to Melf) posted 25-Aug-2007 9:20am Woohoo!! |
| gambler | posted 25-Aug-2007 3:18pm I don't know, since I haven't tried learning them ........... I have heard that "English" is pretty hard for people to learn because so many words sound the same, but are spelt differently and have different meanings and that one word can have loads of different meanings (Look up the word "set" in a dictionary) |
| moviesnob | posted 6-Sep-2007 1:18pm I have no idea. |
| autumnlight | posted 8-Sep-2007 9:03pm No, I thought German was easier than French. |
| pondbar | posted 23-Sep-2007 6:25pm I know a little German, and I think it's an easy language to learn. What the heck, in Germany even little toddlers are speaking German. |
