No, I don't. That isn't something I pay a lot of attention to.

I haven't seen generic products since the eighties. Do they still make those?

I receive several grocery store circulars in the mail each week. I go through each and find which store has the most items I usually need on sale (usually a mix of name brand and store brand), and make my shopping list around those sale items. I typically save 20%-30% shopping this way (based on the store receipt). I'm attached to a few name brands, but I just wait for them to go on sale and stock up when I can.

I buy some of each. It really depends on what the item is.

It depends on what I'm buying. Some things I buy are name brand because I dislike the store and/or generic brand of the product.

It depends. On the whole, I buy brand items, but on occasion, generic items are of such high quality, that I opt for them instead.

Generics died out years ago (the plain yellow packaging stuff). For me it depends on what it is - some food stuff doesn't taste as good in store brands but some is fine, and cheaper too.

Some items I buy are store brand, some are name brands, I rarely buy anything that's generic. In the early eighties, living in southern New England I drove for a trucking company. One of our customers was Sweetlife foods which was later bought out by Super Value. We used to pick up at Green Giant, Del Monte, and other name brand companies that canned and packaged food for the store brands. So there's little differance between buying name brand vs store brand, most of it comes from the same plants or facilities.

I usually try to buy the store brand, like Whole Foods' 365 brand, cuz they're lower in cost. Sometimes when I can't find the store brand I'll get another brand.

I know that you definitely get generic medication and whatnot; not sure about other products.

It depends.

When I go to Highland Farms, I only have the option of brand name items.
The only other grocery chains I shop in are Loblaws and Sobeys. I only have an option of buying generic items at Loblaws, and I do it rarely to never. However, when it comes to store brand, I am far more likely to buy President's Choice items at Loblaws then Compliments at Sobeys.

I buy some of each. Like I refuse to by generic or store brand macaroni-n-cheese, but I buy store brand pop and some foods. The truly generic stuff that came in the white packaging with black lettering I haven't seen in a long time.

I was thinking of things like the white can with "beer" or "peas" written in very plain black letters.

They made a brief splash in the mid eighties over here. Maybe they didn't have them outside of North America. Of course, all they really were was another "name brand" that happened to sell extraordinarily cheap and low quality products with the plainest possible packaging.

That's a pretty smart idea. Over here, the supermarket Tescos has the 'Value' range. It's meant to be the same sort of thing; cheap and low quality. However, the packaging is so simple and the food is meant to be so crap that the customer feels put off and will intentionally buy something which has a higher price and looks a lot classier. Pretty sly, huh?

Clever! ...and they only have to make a very small amount, enough to stock each store and then just let them gather dust...

Exactly; damn supermarkets playing with our weaknesses!
