It's hard to pick one thing, nothing really stands out, but I get a steady steam of DVDs and games in the mail, and it makes me happy when I get one. |

Usually nothing but junkmail comes my way, but what does occasionally make me happy is if I order something and get it the day it's delivered -- as in someone lets the mail delivery guy in with the package instead of when they put a sticky on your door and you have to wait for days to redeliver or have to go pick it up yourself. Or if it's small enough to be put in the mailbox -- like a music CD. Sometimes if I get a really long snailmail survey -- they always enclosed a postage paid self-addressed envelope to mail it back. Once in a great while if I get a small check from a survey company, like $5 or $10 -- that doesn't happen that often. |

I got a $25 amazon.com rewards certificate (I have their credit card). I really haven't gotten a lot of good mail this month. |

child support checks, they are small tho... Any day I get money in the mail is a good day |

These days there is no good mail. I avoid getting the mail and sometimes let it go a few days before heading to the mailbox. Mostly bills, past due notices, threatening letters from creditors. |

Hmm, I'm not sure. I got an information pack through from my new university which was exciting to see, but actually pretty boring once I had opened it. I've had a few freebies in the post though - a ladies' razor worth about £8, some lip salve samples...I always like getting free stuff |

I only received one piece of mail and I wouldn't say it made me happy. It was a bank statement, which wasn't particularly good or bad. |

Xena photos I ordered. The person sent me some extras as a bonus and two Xena greeting cards that apparently the money goes to Lucy Lawless' charity, something about children. I am going to make a collage to hang on my Xena wall. |

Getting my magazine subscriptions, especially the one to National Geographic. That gets read thoroughly from cover to cover. If I had a second choice, it would be Netflix DVDs. |

Me too.... I'm sure it pisses my mailman off that he has to keep cramming new mail into a full box.
I avoid it though.... and when I finally get it out of the box, I mostly throw it away... I pay all my bills online anyway. |

You wouldn't believe the amount of debt I'm in since closing my store! But this really helped keep the wolves from the door. We took a loan on an RRSP we have. I didn't want to do it but hey, you do what you have to. We've got ten years to replace the money. I can only hope that we'll be in a better position soon. I'm not gettin' any younger y'know! |

Thank you so much for saying so. There's people worse off than me I know that. I'm just trying to, well, you know, keep me me through all of this and not get despondent or negative. |

Well if it weren't for all the heels I'd be fine. I'm down to just 2 or 3 pairs of sensible shoes. |

How do you avoid them coming after your house?
I've been meaning to tell you... I've been watching this show "Flip that House" a lot... there are a lot of california and texas homes.... and I couldn't believe what they pay for crap houses out there. My little house in Ohio is a 3 bedroom, 1 bath slab... and it cost me 73k about 5-6 years ago. It's nicer than almost all the houses when they start out on that show. I saw a one room garbage and mold filled shack in south central LA sell for 222k!!!
What the hell?? I knew you'd mentioned before that property costs a lot out there... but what the hell? How does a normal person like myself ever make it in a town like that? Do people who work at regular jobs like call centers, restaurants, etc... make four times as much there as they do here? It's the only way they could buy a shack in CA! Do you happen to know what the starting wage for a fast food restaurant or a call center job would be there? Around here, I'd bet fast food starts around 7-8/hr... and call centers usually start around 10-13/hr. |
cerealkiller | | (reply to they) posted 11-Jul-2007 1:17pm |
Only people who can come after my house is the mortgage company for non-payment. Unsecured creditors can attempt to sue for wage assignment or put a lien on the house if I ever want to sell it. I owe $50k more than it's currently worth so big deal.
Ohio and California don't compare. Who wants to live in Ohio? This is the electronics, computer centroid of the whole world. Housing is about the highest in the nation, gasoline IS the highest here, other stuff pretty much also. Los Angeles is cheaper than up here.
Your house in my town would fetch about $300k. Over in San Jose maybe $650k and believe it or not in extremely desirable areas like Palo Alto and up the peninsula to San Francisco you'd get $750-$900k. Hah, many people spend $750k for maybe a house like yours, tear it down and then build a bigger multi-story home on the property. My son has a 2br 1ba 900sf old home in San Jose. He could easily get $600k for it.
It's all relative though. I make $125k a year but my mortgage is $3000 a month on $450k mortgage. With everything else being high I'm broke and behind on most everything.
Think I heard only 20% of the people can afford to buy a house in California, something like that. Standard blue collar or lower level white collar people live in shacks or rent. If they want to buy a house then both spouses must work and maybe two jobs also.
Wages are higher in general, but not drastically so for low-end entry jobs. There are plenty of young kids willing to work for the $8 minimum wage at fast food places, $9 for security guards and so forth.
Most of the deal about California is the location - beaches, the weather, the mountains, etc. The houses are no way realistically worth the prices they sell for. You're paying to be here and not in Ohio. I could make just as much money living in other states and have a much lower cost of living, or maybe a huge house for $450k. We'd love to move but are pretty much stuck now with the kids and six grandchildren here. Couldn't abandon them. |

Oh yeah, and I was at the mall the other day and tried a sleep number bed... I'm a 30-40.... I forget, what's your number? |
cerealkiller | | (reply to they) posted 11-Jul-2007 4:38pm |

they |
Nothing... it's just that I was thinking.... while I'm talking to CK, there's this one other thing I'd been meaning to tell him.
I can be spacey like that sometimes!
Wow.... 60, you like it firm. He had it set at 100 when we first laid down and it was like a rock!
I just haven't gotten around to replying to the other one.... I didn't have time to read it yet. I'll go look at it now. |
they |
That's what I was thinking about: Liens... I wonder how much you'd have to owe a creditor before they would consider a lien over writing you off and ruining your credit.
I can see your point... That when someone pays that much for a house, they aren't actually paying for the house... but to live in an area with a good climate, ocean, etc.
So I guess it's much easier there to find a low rent apartment than it is to buy a house. Here, I pay less per month on my house payment vs. what I would pay for rent. |
cerealkiller | | (reply to they) posted 12-Jul-2007 4:23pm |
Rents aren't exactly low in desirable areas. In my town here though I could rent a house almost twice the size of mine at half the price. But who would rent to someone with a bunch of cats?
In the urban areas - San Francisco/Oakland/San Jose it's pretty pricey. 20 years ago we paid $950 for a small 3 bedroom apartment. |
