| southernyankee | posted 10-May-2007 10:41pm I think each school should decide for themselves, since all their situations are different. |
| LJD | posted 10-May-2007 11:11pm You have got to be kidding. I do not think gum should be banned from school. |
| LindaH | posted 10-May-2007 11:14pm If it was a big problem, gum everywhere, distracting, popping, etc. I could understand why they would want to ban it. If they banned it, they would still have to make exceptions for teens who use gum to relieve pressure/itching in their ears, or for other medical uses. |
| falkensmaze | posted 11-May-2007 12:07am It should be decided by the school and then only if it has becomea real problem and there isn't another solution. I wouldn't consider banning it at colleges and universities where the students are adults. |
| romkey | posted 11-May-2007 1:02am How about if people start taking responsiblity for their actions and we stop talking about banning things because of a few bad apples/ |
| cloudhugger | posted 11-May-2007 1:13am Um, gum eats your brain cells.
I remember having to spit gum into the nuns hand back when I was a young'n. I thought it was a banned substance. There is something liberating about spitting gum into a nun's hand. |

| CarlHalling | posted 11-May-2007 7:04am When I was a kid, the craze was bubble gum. They used to hand the stuff out free in the playground. I remember once, all the kids had bubble gum, but all I had was some measly piece of chewing gum. I felt so inadequate, especially when one of the kids asked me about my bubble gum, and all I could offer was this tiny piece of grey chewing gum. He proceeded to blow a magnificent bubble, remove the offending matter from his mouth and then turn his gum into a gorgeous pink hot air balloon floating groundwards, just to accentuate my shame. So no! No gum in schools...;o) |
| Cain | posted 11-May-2007 7:17am No, absolutely not. I had to endure the sound of people squelching gum all through High School and it drove me demented. No-one was supposed to do it, but the teachers were quite lax about it.
And then it would get stuck to your clothes because of where people had stuck it. Yuck. |
| paulyw | posted 11-May-2007 10:14am Well, I am actually undecided. My opinion is gum can be allowed as long the students don't abuse it. When I was in Jr, High, kids sometime will spit the gum in the drinking fountain, and that was so GROSS! They also would spit it elsewhere, and not the garbage can where it should be. I usually don't chew gum though, because I have the habit of swallowing it after chewing it for a while. One teacher only allowed us to chew gum once a week only, (no candy) but if you abused it, such as blowing bubbles in her face, then you would not be able to chew gum for the rest of the school year. Therefore, I would allow gum in school, but if students don't spit the gum in the garbage, then gum will not be allowed. |
| kitkat | posted 11-May-2007 2:29pm Yes, it should. The last thing we need is yet another ban. |
| filiasan | posted 11-May-2007 4:15pm I love gum, as well. But many, many children and teenagers like to be rude. And allowing them gum would just give them another chance to be disruptive. I used to have mints in school but I had some teachers who were okay with that. I wasn't rude at all. In fact, I was pretty shy. |
| RGirl | posted 11-May-2007 9:06pm No because it can be noisy, distracting and kids don't dispose of it properly all the time. It is nasty for your teeth anyway. |
| RGirl | (reply to LindaH) posted 11-May-2007 9:08pm Yeah, I used to have to chew Biotene gum for dry mouth. That or get red bleeding gums. Medical uses would be the exception. |
| llamamama | posted 11-May-2007 9:49pm Yes it should be...and you shouldn't state your opinion in a survey question.. |
| Iseult | posted 11-May-2007 11:17pm I don't know. I'm personally okay with it, but it's not best manners to be chewing gum, and I do agree, gums under desks are a problems. I'm going to go with yes, gum should be allowed in school, but only in high school (not because high schoolers are oh so mature, but because at their age they should be able to act responsible (I'm not saying that they do, but they ought to)). |
| CarolL | posted 12-May-2007 12:57am Yes, gum should be compulsory in fact. No gum, no learn. The halls should be lined with gumball machines and complimentary scissors should be provided for those "little accidents". |
| Danger | posted 12-May-2007 1:15am I had a teacher who once told me how a girl in his class used to cheat using gum, when it was allowed. She would take sticks of gum and write a cheat sheet on them using a toothpick and food coloring, then would lay them on her desk during tests and use them. If a teacher walked by and looked too closely, all she would have to do to avoid being caught was chew the gum.
That being said, I think gum should be allowed. And hey, if someone is creative enough to use gum to cheat, I say let 'em! |
| Enheduanna | posted 12-May-2007 9:41am No; it's annoying. |
| Biggles | posted 12-May-2007 3:04pm I want to say yes, but it does make such a nasty mess...so I suppose the answer would be no. |
| jettles | posted 12-May-2007 6:16pm i think that gum shouldn't be allowed in this survey because it is bad! |
| Maarten | posted 12-May-2007 8:02pm This needs options like:
I don't care I don't know Yes, because ... No, because ... What's gum? Also it should be non-biased. |
| Lahdee | posted 13-May-2007 8:57am I think they should allow it, and when they catch kids sticking it to tables or throwing it on the floor, make them clean the undersides of desks or something. Some teachers allowed gum and others didn't. I chewed it anyway. It's easy to be discreet about chewing gum, if you want to be. Did anyone click my google search? Chewing gum helps you think when you study. Whatever helps the kids is a good thing. Punish those who abuse the privileges. |

| cerealkiller | posted 14-May-2007 6:57pm Only if you bring enough for everyone in class.
Guns should be allowed though |
| dab | (reply to cerealkiller) posted 14-May-2007 7:14pm > Guns should be allowed though
But only if you bring enough for everyone? |
| cerealkiller | (reply to dab) posted 14-May-2007 7:15pm Sure. You should be scanned when entering the school to make sure you HAVE a gat on you. |
| LindaH | posted 14-May-2007 8:45pm I never understood that "bring enough for everyone" nonsense. It's a fact of life that some people will have their own snacks, their own toys, their own goodies they brought from home. Whiners who think it's "no fair" their friend has treats and they don't need to get it in their head that it is fair. The teacher isn't doling out the treats, they are being brought from home. It's theirs. There's absolutely nothing unfair about that, unless you're a commie. Any kid over age 4 should understand property ownership. |
| thecomic22 | posted 14-May-2007 9:26pm I dont really care. I mean I chewed my share through school, but I was always careful not to get caught. I really dont see what the huge deal is. |
| Melf | posted 16-May-2007 3:08pm Yes, but with bins encouraged and put in easy to see places. The problem is that people put gum under desks because they can't go to the bin to get rid of it, or aren't encouraged to because they aren't meant to be chewing in the first place. |
| Zang | posted 16-May-2007 9:15pm I think gum-chewing is a filthy disgusting habit. I don't necessarily think that it should be completely banned from school grounds, but I don't think it would be unreasonable to insist that it not be chewed during class time. |
| vampiresareundead | posted 17-May-2007 1:59am why not? not everybody sticks it under desks & stuff |
| pablonunez2125 | posted 8-Jun-2007 6:12am hell yes it should it actually doesnt matter because i always do and ive never been caught |
