I pretty much equally dislike the ones of these that I have tried. Not a soft-drink drinker.

Sorry, I have to leave them all blank, I've never tried any of them. I don't think we get them in Australia and even if we do, I don't drink soft drink.

They all suck, but I can tolerate Dr Pepper. I totally refuse to drink any flavored Coke or Pepsi. Disgusting.

I forgot all about this! *raspberry*

I don't drink this sort of stuff very often. A lot of these are limited availability around here anyway. It was just a whim. When I do drink soda pop, I tend to favour these ones. My ranking was:

1. Black Cherry Vanilla Coke
2. Cherry Coke
3. Mr Pibb
4. Wild Cherry Pepsi
5. Dr Pepper
6. Dr. Skipper

Of the list, I've only ever tried Dr. Pepper and Cherry Coke (neither of which I'm that keen on). Dr. Pepper just edges it.

Do you know of any good resources to dispute the claim that soft drinks dehydrate you? My bullcrapometer went off on reading LJD's comment, but the only thing I can find is an article on the British Nutrition Foundation website which isn't that informative.

Well, severe hyperglycaemia *can* lead to dehydration - but I think it would be pretty difficult to get that from chugging soft drinks unless you were diabetic. However caffeine is often considered to be a diuretic and my guess would be that is what LJD is referring to. A quick search of journal articles via Scirus throws up a few that dispute that idea. For example a paper that concludes that diuresis due to caffeine is overemphasised and another paper by the same author. However this is a paper that finds that caffeine *does* increase diuresis but a glucose-like substance does not (so soft drinks are no more diuretic than other caffeinated drinks)...but with all of these I can only view the abstracts, which can sometimes be a bit misleading about the findings. My feelings from skimming through a few searches I did are 1) that caffeine has been widely accepted as a diuretic for a long time and this is stated in a lot of papers that are not specifically investigating this and 2) although caffeine may have diuretic properties, soft drinks containing caffeine are no more likely to dehydrate you than coffee or tea and 3) decaffeinated soft drinks probably won't dehydrate you unless you drink quite a lot and are diabetic, or you drink absolutely loads and aren't diabetic.

On a sidenote, This is the first place I go for any nutritional advice/information as almost every claim is well referenced. I couldn't find anything on there about soft drinks though.

I've read stuff on coffee and alcohol both being diuretics, however what I've read suggests that the water content of coffee and beer far outweighs the diuretic potential of either. The only caveat is long-haul air travel because the cabin pressure provokes diuresis. Obviously spirits like whisky are far more likely to dehydrate you because of the concentration of alcohol. When I read LJD's comment, I did a quick search and found this gem of an article (that looks to have been penned by the American equivalent of "Dr." Gillian McKeith) which lead me to think that perhaps it's not the caffeine content of soft drinks that is thought to be the issue, but the idea that soft drinks are *gasp* carbonated.
