...beautiful day..., ...James's..., What's an...
It's funny, I was just talking about this elsewhere (specifically, the case where you end up with "s's", in our case it was "Bill Gates's" which sounds awkward but is correct, as is James's). |

I need to find James's hat.
What's an apostrophe?
In the James's hat one, it would be correct with or without the second s. |

...It's a beautiful day (it's = it is)...friend of yours' (in this case, speaking to more than one person)...What's (= what is)....Those are correct. The "it's" in the second sentence should be "its". DVD's and 1960's are fairly obvious (the apostrophe is not needed). And James's shouldn't have the extra "s". |

Don't forget that plural possessive rule. |

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood is the only one I think I know is right. The one with James's I am torn on because I just saw this in a book I am reading and thought it was wrong. I thought it was supposed to be James'. My grammar is atrocious these days. So is my spelling. |

Dammit! I didn't include What's an because I just thought it was an option. This was a trick survey! |

You are correct that it should be James' and not the odd American version with adding the extra s.

Yeah, I thought some one had made a major typo in the book! |

I'm not sure about James's - I've seen it written both James' and James's before - I think James' is usually seen as correct, but I think the alternate version is accepted also. |

I'm also not sure about James's. My personal belief is that James' is correct and James's is not correct, but I'm really not sure that I'm right about that one. Other than that, "It's a beautiful ..." and "What's an ... " are the only correct ones.
I use apostrophes to indicate plurals often... "DVD's"... when I shouldn't. |

I need to find James's hat. - Both James' and James's are accepted, although I prefer the former one.

Cool survey! "It's a beautiful day" is correct, and "What's an apostrophe?" I'm not sure about the 1960's one, but I don't think it's right. The others are not correct.
