If the after-life was a dream...

I recently watched Open Your Eyes (Abre los ojos) (1997) (Vanilla Sky was a remake of this film), and it has a similar thing going on in it.

I'm having trouble answering this survey. I don't think there is an afterlife. So, I suppose anything other than nothing is better. But, recycling my life experiences seems like it would get old pretty fast. Can I dream up some new experiences? Can I lucid dream a little? It's hard for me even to say if I like my dreams. Sometimes, I do, I suppose. But, I don't really think of them that way, they just are. Mostly, I don't remember them very well and they don't make a lot of sense. So...

I need to start racking up some better life experiences.

I would be quite shocked that there was an afterlife.

It would depend on whether it was my good dreams or bad dreams. Either way, though, it might be a little frustrating, since my dreams are frequently a little nonsensical.

An infinitely long dream derived from a finite source material is the worst form of torture imaginable.

Some of my dreams are really nice, some are just strange and some are absolutely terrifying - it's not what I would hope for as an afterlife. And if the dreams were just based on things that had already happened, it would be living the same thing again. It wasn't much fun the first time, wouldn't want to do all that again!

I would hope for something different, but similar. Something along the lines of similar to reincarnation where in the next life you live as a regular human being with its normal ups and downs.

I just saw the movie Brain Candy yesterday. I am kinda hoping that "heaven" wouldn't be anything like that, where you are constantly living in bliss reliving happy memories, but more like real life where you still get fired or attacked by violent random criminals once in a while, and you still have to go to work 9-to-5 (maybe it gets cut to 10-to-4); except maybe you get given "immortality" or something and you don't have children or age and stay at 30.

This is all assuming that there actually is something like an afterlife and also assuming that right now isn't a dread already.

It seems I've replaced real life with dreaming lately. The dreams are great, but I'd rather do earthly things while I have the chance instead of sleeping till sunset. It's a vicious cycle.

The main intent of my question isn't actually about dreams or an 'after'life at all (especially if you don't even believe in one), it's about making the best of this life. I figure an eternity of reaping as one sowed might give people pause to consider just what it is they do here. My dreams take place in alternate realities anyhow, but I still think reincarnation is the best deal possible. (Better than spending eternity at the p-D Walmart, to be sure.)

How did Open Your Eyes compare to Vanilla Sky (which I enjoyed).

Open Your Eyes was better than Vanilla sky, though it's Spanish with subtitles...

If the after-life was like my dreams, then romkey would be in hospital with a kidney problem and repeatedly flashing my grandmother! I always have strange dreams when I'm working nights...

You must stop whatever you're doing and go rent/buy 'A Scanner Darkly' right now! It's very true to the book, I think you'll like it a lot. I thought it really gave life to the book on top of that. It was great.

Ah, the 'was', not 'were'. I hadn't noticed your correction. Upon examination, it doesn't make sense, and yet I'm sure it's at least fairly common to say such things as 'Supposing there were a nation that..'. I'll mind better in the future on that one.

Minority Report and Blade Runner were improvments too in some respects, although some of the things that made P.K. Dick special were lost too. He has excellent concepts, but his writing is kind of clumsy.

Minority Report and Blade Runner are crappy adaptations compared to Linklater's "A Scanner Darkly". I loved Blade Runner, but it's pretty different from "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep". "Minority Report" and "Pay Check" where both just star-driven Hollywood swill.

I think clumsy is unfair, but to each his or her own.

Let me put it this way, his stuff seldom flowed so naturally that I forget I was reading someone's writing. But then some people's speaking can be that way too, so if you're writing about such people, then it is realistic. I'm also bugged by movies where one gets the feeling that the actors trade places reciting lines (most any 70's movie)

I had another sort of prophetic-like dream last night, in which I was walking along a california beach looking at an oil refinery with a hundred tanks half-buried in sand dunes and overgrown in ivy. It was almost pretty.

Well, both, if your dreams are like your life experiences. I'd call something like flying over things you'd seen in a movie or having all your teeth fall out to still be based on life experience.

I think my dream was psychically tied into a protest at the San Ramon, CA Chevron refinery taking place earlier that day (4th year of Iraq war), but a projection of what it will look like in the future.

Well, I think I had a stroke half a week ago, and all the songs on the radio have been about heaven or death since then. I've gone so far as to start planning my next life and writing a will. I see the Dr in the morning about it.

Are serious about the stroke?

Alas, yes. I have no idea for sure what it was. My ideas range from B12 deficiency to diabetes or MS. The sudden appearance of a bulging cranial artery sort of backs up the stroke/embolism theory though. I went to a doctor yesterday, but alas, the saying 'Couldn't be on time to save their life' applies to me, so I had to reschedule my appt. for tomorrow.

Is that chocolate on my hand?
