I've heard, start setting aside 20-30% by the age of 30. Impossible, and not even permissable on disability.

I put the maximum allowed in to my 401K. If my company matched, it could go higher, but alas. My dad has been giving me and my wife put in an IRA every year. We did a Roth, but then our incomes went above the threshold for eligibility, so then we did and will continue to do normal IRAs. We've got some stocks and stock fund investments that aren't earmarked for anything, so I'm classifying them as retirement.
I hate insurance, especially life insurance. Maybe I'd feel different if I had kids. A fair part of our money right now is a money market account as I move it from company stock options to managed stock funds.

I'm really not thinking of it as 'saving for my retirement' at this point; I'd really like to die on the job

[they found him slumped over the keyboard, his final words were 'if (STAR_has_rebels (starrec) && (Rebels_Think_They_Can_Win (starrec)))) Set_Up_Revfr4t5gbhg']

but I've got all this extra money so I might as well put it somewhere and see if it really does compound as fast as they say it does.

Bill: life insurance can also be used as an investment vehicle. Variable life policies share many of the characteristics of annuities and can earn a respectful return. Most people think of term life or whole life when they think of insurance, the new forms of insurance are much better.

drdt: i'm almost with you. I once considered sky-diving sans parachute, or being torn asunder by wild animals, but now, i think i'll just skip out on the whole process. I have the been there, done that sensation too much already.

jjg - the Motley Fools (www.fool.com) counterrecommend insurance as an investment vehicle. They recommend taking term life, and investing the difference for a greater yield.

Jas: I don't think you are with me at all. It isn't about dying early, its about working late (something I am getting to be an expert on).

My sentiments exactly, not sure how i steered you wrong. I just expect a great deal of terra-forming along the way. I'm not adverse to gardening or propogating asteroid belts.
I used to put in my 70 hours /wk on the clock, now it's off the clock. But i can smell the roses now.

drdt: someone I work with came in to work (at his previous job) one day to find a guy slumped at his computer, dead. It happens.

So, does this mean you're working on a new version of Stella? * smile *

We've already put away quite a bit of money for our retirement. The largest portion is in stocks. One thing that has helped our net worth is a rental property we own (condo) on Longboat Key. We're also building a flat in Phuket, Thailand with our best friends. It will also be a rental property.

I have an IRA mostly because the 401K at work that I participated in because it seemed the responsible thing to do even if I don't see myself living to be old enough to enjoy it had to be rolled over.
