Is this a quotation of hope or of despair?

"Life's like an hourglass stuck to the table"
Anna Nalick-Breathe

You do not have to listen to the song to form an opinion...

I'm thinking "frustration", though mostly I just don't understand what she's trying to say. Are there more lyrics that put this line into context? ... ah, I found it myself:
Cause you can’t jump the track, we’re like cars on a cable
And life’s like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, girl.
So cradle your head in your hands
And breathe… just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe

I think she's just talking about making a mistake and no being able to go back and redo things. That's clearly not hope, but I wouldn't say despair either. Just, regret, I suppose.

I think it's actually "Life's like an hourglass glued to the table". Not to pick nits or anything.

It sounds like despair to me, since you can't flip it over if it's stuck to the table. But really, I think I would want to hear it the context of the whole song to know whether it was intended this way. Perhaps there's some element of the simile that I'm missing.

I cannot make any sense of this line I have to confess, but it sounds vaguely pessimistic to these ears.

This sounds like despair to me and the way life is most times

The word "stuck" is rarely positive, so I'd say despair. But it's mostly a bad metaphor.

Sounds extremely frustrating...it's a song of frustration in being unable to move forward.

Despair and desperation. Don't you know that most would spend their last fleeting moments desperately trying to flip that thing over instead of living?

I sense despair here. The use of the word "stuck" is the biggest clue. It clearly indicates that the writer sees life as a stagnant condition, something that is not allowed to evolve. Take away the curvy, sexy images that "hourglass" conjures and what you have is "Life's stuck to the table." Not much joy and hope here, my friends...

P.S. I knew those Content Analysis classes would come in handy some day! *laughing out loud*

I'd say "neither". I don't think it's about hope or despair. It's just a statement of fact. Once you're on this planet, your time is limited.

Actually, they do - "Days of Our Lives" - but they also use it as a humorous line in "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure".

I find myself caring less and less about such things. I think there might be something wrong with me but I have no true concern about my health at this moment.
