Don't kid yourself: there's always something around. The reason it seems like there's nothing around is that the spiders are eating everything before you see it.

Nothing until something arrives. After they eat they discard thier trash, leaving the appearance of nothing to eat.

I dunno - saw my first big one this year - bloody massive and moved like streak lightning! Euck.

Does wrapping something in web preserve it? Maybe they have stockpiles of food they caught in the summer.
