When I was a kid, my family would drive from Massachusetts to Florida for vacation (we did it 4-5 times). My dad had it all worked out. My parents would load me and my brother into the back of the Ford LTD station-wagon, still asleep, at 3am. Then, he'd drive straight from Massachusetts down to Lumberton, North Carolina. According to Yahoo Maps, that's about 780 miles, 12 hours, 20 minutes. I assume it took longer, since I'm sure we stopped (though, we ate packed lunches and stuff; there was a mini-fridge in the station-wagon too).
Later, as an adult, my wife and I drove from Massachusetts to Lexington, Kentucky in one shot (also, back), for her brother's wedding. Yahoo Maps says that's 900 miles, 14 hours. I seem to recall it took us more like 20 hours, though. That was too long, we've opted to fly ever since. |

The longest car ride I've taken was from Winnipeg to Thunder Bay, about 8 hours (9 if you count the 1 hour break in Kenora). |

Probably Boston to the Baltimore area in the mid-80's. I drove Boston to San Francisco once but stopped for a lot more than "comfort" breaks. |

I'm not sure; maybe 10-12 hours? I was on a longer bus trip, but that's not really the same. |

The longest journey I have ever taken was riding in the car while my father drove us to Riverside (an amusement park in New England). Of course I was only 9 at the time, but when you are a kid, car rides that take only one hour can feel like a life time. "Are we there yet?" |

Drumnadrochit to Leeds - a quick check on the internet states it's just shy of 400 miles. With one pee stop.
Not the longest trip posted on here I'm sure, but far too long for me - hate being cramped in a car. |

I was just up at the Lexington Airport picking up Ben a few weeks ago. It's a tiny little place. I used to work in Lexington occasionally for the last company I was with. It's about 1.5 hours from me. |

Yeah, we drove through Cincinnati on the way down... though, we drove back through West Virginia... We flew down there a few years ago, but I think we arrived in Louisville (I can't remember! I remember it has just snowed, which was unusual). They moved a little, though they are still somewhat close to Lexington, I think (they drove us around, so I don't really know where I was). I think they were actually in Versailles (which they don't pronounce the French way, lol). Oh, and they are near Frankfurt now too. |
they | | (reply to bill) posted 25-Feb-2007 8:10pm |
You must have taken 64 across on the WV trip. I still use 64 in WV for taking Mare to her dad's in NC.
Yeah, Versailles' pronunciation has always bugged me. There are some beautiful horse farms in Lexington, and some awesome camping and hiking (Daniel Boone National Forest) further south... but otherwise, there's not much to drive around and look at in Lexington that I've noticed. |

WV was pretty to drive through... I remember the horse pastures, nice grass.

As in Point Pleasant, WV? From the Mothman Prophecies?
I drive through Pt. Pleasant when I take Mare to meet her dad. He lives in NC, and we meet in the mountains of WV halfway. I have to drive East across the entire bottom of Ohio, and through Pt. Pleasant to get there. It's kind of a creepy area... but you leave the highway in Ohio to use this country road that runs along the river for about 40 miles... that's when you're in Pt. Pleasant.... A lot of truckers use that road so there is this weird mixture of small farms, mansions, wrecked trailers, and truckstops with dirty movie booths. The country road leads to the highway in WV. |
they | | (reply to bill) posted 25-Feb-2007 9:27pm |
I agree, it's beautiful. If you ever want to take a scenic drive, I recommend taking 77S through West Virginia and Virginia in the fall. You go through Charleston and all through the mountains. It goes through two very long tunnels as well. |

| cabinfever | | posted 26-Feb-2007 12:39am |
The longest wasn't a car trip... it was two weeks of hell trapped in a motor home with my mother, sister, and stepfather. We drove from southeastern Washington to Missouri, via the Dakotas, then back through Oklahoma and New Mexico. At least New Mexico was cool... we saw Carlsbad Caverns. Over 1800 miles there, and a little more back.
Ooops, edit. Didn't quite read correctly the part about just being a straight journey. Our trip was for a family reunion, with lots of site-seeing along the way. |

I forget what roads we took, but whatever you guessed it probably right, we just took the big interstates. It took so long, we just had to keep driving the whole time. On the way there, we got really tired and it was getting super late too (2am?). We were staying at the Ramada in Lexington, so we kept chanting "Ramada, Ramada, Ra-Ma-Da, ra-ma-da, RA-ma-DA, ..." It was funny, but also really sad and pathetic-like.
Anyway, the drive home was better somehow. We left early in the morning, and it was foggy and the hills and mountains were misty. I remember, we got off the highway once to get gas and ended up driving forever to get anywhere, but then we suddenly got somewhere (gas station, etc) and it was on the top of this plateau. So, it had a nice view and was worth it, in the end. It was kind of a long time ago, I just remember bits and pieces of it. I remember seeing signs for "Cracker Barrel" a lot. I'd never heard of the place before. Since then, I think there are some up here now too.
I don't recall any tunnels, but tunnels are cool, I agree. I suspect I probably sang that John Denver song (in my head) most of the way through WV. "West Virginia, mountain momma" ... |
they | | (reply to bill) posted 26-Feb-2007 7:12am |
And what do you think?
I'm leaning towards active imaginations.
That's an awesome statue, I had no idea.... Maybe next time, I should hang around Pt Pleasant and have a look.... I cross what I assume is the replacement for that Silver bridge every time I go on that trip. |

I'm taking this to mean no stopping to sleep. If so, Tampa to Atlanta or the reverse. Did that several times when I lived in Florida. I also drove from CT to Tampa when I moved. However, I did stop to sleep in South Carolina. I was the driver on all of these trip and with the exception of my roommate joining me once, I was always alone. |

Probably Vancouver to some little buttfudge town in northern California. Redding? At least 12 hours, I don't know...maybe 550 miles?
I'm not including journeys that were by truck or bus or any other vehicle aside from a "car". I'm assuming that the journey ends when you stop to sleep. I'm also assuming that "fuel, food and comfort" is an exception to "must have been in the car". |

California to Alaska. There was one stretch where I was driving 31 hours straight, watching things pass on the adjacent highway which I found later did not exist, until finally I just came to a stop on the highway, totally asleep. |

Worse, we were in San Diego getting ready to go home to LA when we found out a parent friend of ours kids just drove off with their parent's car keys to head home to LA. We tried to catch up to them quickly, but the darn teenagers made it all the way home before we could get to them, get their parent's car keys from them, drive back to San Diego to give them to the parents and to then head back to LA to go home. Ugh, what a long day. |
Kristal_Rose | | (reply to docgbrown) posted 18-Mar-2007 7:13am |
Oh man, hope you had good music and conversation. That probably took away much of the sight-seeing mood of both trips. Now you know better than to try and catch up to teenagers. Your only hope was their briefly getting lost or distracted along the way. |
