What do you do when you arrive at a stop sign?

I'm not asking what you are supposed to do, or what you did when you took your driving test. I'm asking what you actually do in practice.

Please select the answers that most closely resemble your usual behavior.

Slow down and "almost" stop but not quite, depending on your definition of almost; look both ways before coming to the stop sign so I know I am not stopping for nothing. If theres a car coming I try to beat out the other guy to get to the stop sign first. It also depends on the area. I always make a complete stop whenever I am in the city in broad daylight, especially the CBD. It also depends on what location and if that area is notorious for cops being there all the time. I don't think I ever completely ignored a stop sign unless I honestly don't see it.

I stop completely for a second or two, then, if the coast is clear, I drive off.

There's a couple I completely ignore. There's one I treat as a yield sign. There's some I kind of coast through. Others that I completely stop at. Some I only come to a complete stop if there's traffic.

Zang: In qual, I meant that some people come to a complete stop at the stop sign, which is what you're supposed to do. There wasn't an option for that. But, I guess that's what other is for.

Usually a rolling stop. Sometimes, if someone else is approaching from the opposite direction, I speed up so I can get there first.

Complete stop before the sign. I have to here. There are four way stops, three way stops and two way stops and I haven't memorized them yet and there is always something I have to look around like parked cars.
I used to just pause.

It depends... sometimes I slow down and almost stop, but not quite at the backroads intersections that are never busy. Some stop signs in this backwater burg are in weird places and you have no choice but to stop a car length or two past the sign so you can see down the intersecting road. But most times I try to come to a stop before or next to the stop sign.

I come to a comeplete stop, and I count to three. It's a dumb stupid way to get a ticket to not take the time to do this.

Yes, Teatree used to say that all the time...I mean all the freakin' time and would get pissed because 'we' kept asking her driving surveys.
And twisted as it is, Teatree was Wolfs sister. And you know they ended up being the same person.

If there's no traffic (which is common where I live), I will often do the rolling stop, after the sign thing, then go through. I know, I shouldn't but I'm an evil bastard. If there are cars around, I generally come to a complete stop, that my be slightly after the sign, in some cases.

Another case... if someone is in front of me, and they go through, I will sometimes ride their heels through the intersection without doing the complete stop (again) since I had been stopped behind them previously, and that's enough stopping for me thank you very much. I only do this when it's safe (no cars coming).

Lets face it, stop sign rules are a little excessive. If a driver is alert and looking around, it's safe to fudge the rules a little.

I have two theories. Either everyone is lying, or people on SC are much more conscientious drivers than 95% of the drivers around here. Almost no one stops at stop signs here. They just kind of slow down unless there's something in their way. Also, the point at which they come closest to stopping is never before the stop sign, but about a car length past the stop sign.

I realised what you were getting at later. When I said "before", I meant what you are thinking of as "at". I didn't mean "before" as in 50 feet down the street before. The place you are supposed to stop is just behind the stop sign. The stop sign should be more or less in line with the very front of your car. That's what I meant. When you brought that up in qualification, I thought you just didn't see the two options that mentioned coming to a complete stop.

Actually, I'm noticing that the comments don't match up with the survey results. Most of the comments seem to admit to fudging quite a bit, but if you look at how people selected options you get a different impression.

Or it could be just the area that you live. People who live in cities and certain areas are more observant to the rules. Maybe you are just lucky to live in a town that doesn't have any cops.

Part of the reason I stop is because I got pulled over for 'pausing' and got off with a warning. Seemed like a simple change to avoid a ticket.

It depends on a lot of things, but I slow down and almost stop sometimes, and sometimes I come to a complete stop before the sign and sometimes after the sign. Just depends on how well I can see what's coming.

(reply to Zang) posted 24-Feb-2007 4:05pm

Yeah, but do they actually enforce the law. One time I remember I was doing around 85 in a 70 mile zone in the fast lane and a cop in an unmarked vehicle turned the sirens on me and I was very nervous. When I started to slow down and move to the right lane he sped up and zoomed right past me. Then my brother started lecturing me "dude, man, you shouldn't be hogging the left lane if you gonna be driving so slow, you're blocking traffic."

That about sums up the attitude cops around here have about speeding. I don't think they make too much of a fuss about running stop signs but I rather not test that theory. Over here its normal for a lot of people to do 90. Hell, I almost failed my drivers licences test for doing a rolling stop. Yeah, I ALMOST failed; apparently doing a rolling stop even on a driver's test doesn't seem too unreasonable. Ask me about my (in)ability to parallel park. I know that in some states you can't even pass your test if you can't parallel park, but here, no one gives a crap.

Up north, in the Northeastern states or northern Midwestern states, Milwaukee comes to mind, its a totally different story. From what I hear, they ticket your ass for doing 30 in a 20 zone. I don't know how things are done in Canada, much less the part of Canada that you live in. My guess is that SC has a lot of users who happen to live in the Northeast or Northern Midwest which would explain the answers that you get.

I think they have a lot more important things to worry about. Speeding in a school zone? Yeah. Fudging through a stop sign? I really doubt it. Maybe if they were bored...

I believe on the drivers test (here) you are allowed some minor mistakes, a very small number of very minor ones.

I would think that doing 30 in a 20 zone would be like doing 90 in a 60 zone. Possibly worse! If it's a 20 zone, it's probably a playground or something...
