Celebrities who aren't famous for doing anything in particular:

I'll get you started: Donald Trump, Paris Hilton, Anna Nicole Smith...

List as many as you can think of.

Is that the all-singing, dancing, and acting Paris Hilton who has several lucrative business deals going (perfumes, jewellery, nightclubs, mobile phone games, etc, etc)? I don't like her much, but she can hardly be accused of not doing anything.

I'd disagree. His album "Thriller" is one of the highest sold of all time. In recent years he has done nothing but his music was very popular in years past.

I don't know how Donald Trump got lumped in with these two. He's done quite a bit with his life. Lately he's let himself become a bit of a joke but that doesn't take away from what he has done.

It's kind of hard to come up with people... Most people did something, though often it's kind of lame or was a long time ago.

hm... how about Quentin Crisp? He's dead now, and I know he did some writing, but mostly he was just a fun personality for talk shows and parties.

Yes! He did write a book though.

I guess part of what I'm looking for is people who seem to be way more famous than their achievements would lead one to expect. Or people who's claim to fame seems to be appearing as a "celebrity" on a game show or whatever and they milk that for so long that everyone forgets how they became one in the first place.

I also think that being famous just for being rich is kind of lame. Okay, Bill Gates. Fine. Everyone else?!! How is that interesting? It seems just as well to have people being famous for being fabulously poor! *grin*

Celebrity homeless guys! *laughing out loud*

I know there's more. I'm having trouble thinking of them too.

(reply to Enigma) posted 21-Feb-2007 2:29am

I just know him as this guy who started getting a lot of media attention back in the eighties for no particular reason other than he was supposed to be really wealthy, although no where near the Forbes list or anything.

Then a few years later, it turned out that he bought all that from a press agent. The idea was to gain a reputation so that he could bank on it. Then he went bankrupt or close to it. Then everyone forgot about him until this reality show thing hit.

And Gawd he has an awful hair style!

Lots of people do "quite a bit" more with their lives. I suppose I don't understand why someone like him should be so famous. What contribution has he made to society, culture, history etc.? Nothing that I'm aware of.

1819 The "soda fountain" patented by Samuel Fahnestock.
1835 The first bottled soda water in the U.S. 1850 A manual hand & foot operated filling & corking device, first used for bottling soda water.
1851 Ginger ale created in Ireland.
1861 The term "pop" first coined.

I think he just qualifies as a stand-up comic that some people like, some people are indifferent to and a lot of people hate.

I mean, I could say "Pauly Shore" or "Sinbad", but just because I don't like what they do, doesn't mean that they haven't done anything. Although they're both kind of borderline... *grin*

Donald Trump famous for nothing in particular? Um, maybe cause he's a multi-billionaire businessman. By that standard ANYONE who is famous ever, other than politicians and scientists is famous for being famous.

Ok, allow me to start. Carrot Top, Marilyn Monroe, half the women in playboy, Tyra Banks, half of every model ever, Britney Spears, Kevin Federline, that Dell Kid, Princess Dianna, some more people I can't think of.

But they are all famous for something; Trump for his rebounding real estate success, Anna Nichole Smith and her stripping career and subsequent, messy probate legal issues, her son’s death, her death and the most accomplished one of all, the actor, author, singer, party hostess, and vixen; Paris Hilton.
