Could you drink out of your toilet?

In the event of a disaster you might lose your water supply, and in that case the only water around may be in your toilet. If this happened right now, could you drink out of your toilets? I mean the ones where you live.

I suppose if that were the only water there were and I really needed it I would scrub it extra well, flush the chemicals out a few times, and then drink... but it would be pretty gross.

Gilly: but if there were a disaster and you lost your water supply, flushing would be a bad idea... OTOH, there is a lot of water in the tank which isn't contaminated by excrement so you should be okay.

I think you could drink out of the top of it, not the bowl.

I grew up a couple of yards from the San Andraes Fault (Not that I necessarily learned how to spell it) and with that came the knowlage that the water from the toiet *tanks* might be my source of water for a while if things got ugly...

I would drink the water from the tank on the back.

I'd drink from the water stored in the tank. Not from the bowl itself.

I could have until the landlord installed the new low-flow model three weeks ago. It doesn't hold much. On the other hand, I have two water containers specifically for that purpose.

in a survival situation I might, but I really wouldn't consider it otherwise

Water from the tank, I would probably want just filter. The water from the bowl on the other hand I think I would try to boil, if possible, first before drinking.

I generally drink from other peoples drinks and otherwise expose myself to routine immunity conditioning, though i'd avoid challenges like hepatitis or aids. In an emergency, I'd drink from a toilet, but i'd certainly deplete the upper tank first, and add some chlorine to it. If i didn't know the health history of all those who used it, I'd probably make a distillation system out of my pressure cooker first.

Only if i really had too.
I know this is beside the point, but I'm listening to the radio, and all the songs were redone. Even my theme song 'Silent all those years'

jaff- Good to know you can. p.s. i like 'Jazz' and the other marks. i'm thinking to do a survey about wouls people want to remember their prior incarnation.
foo- I thought maybe you did because you mentioned a SC road sign and the earthquake damage, i take it your somewhere in the bay area though. I loved Santa Cruz, maybe i should move back. New York would probably be a healthy contrast for me. I have the sudden urge these past couple days to go world travelling, like never before. I suddenly have all these things i want to do, so i guess i'm trying to figure out what kind of work i can do.

Jazz//~~> glad you like it :) it seems to fit...hmm...i'm not sure i'd like to remember previous lives...my two best friends (one male, one female and they're a couple) and i have a theory that we are three parts of a disassociated whole that won't combine again until several lives from now if it doesn't become even more fragmented

I can remember a bit from both mt own and a lineage graft ()like Dax), and even a slight genetic memory of the planet, but even remembering my mutiples from this life can be a burden. Although it's been good, i'd still choose to forget, knowing too much ruins things. The fragmentation makes sense in that many of us can inherit some Da Vinci, and Joan of Arc, on the other hand, do you ever get the sensation that you keep running into variations of the same people.

i -insist- that i keep running into variations of the same people and I DON'T LIKE THEM

i've seen a past me in a mirror...i'd like to believe also that it was a dream

Not me, all my peter's have prison energy, my michaels are angels, debbies are hell fire, bob's are lazy scoundrels, robert's are knights, jim's are structured philosophers, on and on. Some i like, others i dont. Of course i still get totally unique people, but even then i start searching memory cause it seems like i always knew them. & i don't let such wacky stereotyping affect people i just meet any more than astrology.

Is this a changling, or a beverage connoisseur.
I seem to recall some joke about drinking straws, but it's probably not worth remembering entirely. My father-in-law was once talking about taking a chainsaw to frozen outhouse piles, then he replied to my reply by saying "I'd like to take a chainsaw to those scientists with their heads full of brain". I though it was rather funny. I've sculpted toilets before. One was had an overhead tank for the 1882 play 'spring's awakening' another was a faux installation of a urinal on the wall of our conceptual art classroom, with the urinal ripped out of the wall entitled 'this is not art'. I later (actually earlier) made a piece entitled 'this is not art' and that's all there was. I did the 'urinal minus the urinal' piece later, just to prove i was handy at sculpture, and not copping out with my purely conceptual piece. I also designed a pretty wild piece for my cosmic pop series entitled 'Cosmic Crap'. Those were the good old days.

If there was no other water available for days I could drink the water out of the toilet tank. I would boil it first and maybe add a few drops of bleach. I'd have to be REALLY desperate to use the water out of the toilet bowl for anything other than its intended use! We have several gallons of drinking water stored in the event of an emergency, so hopefully it wouldn't come to that.

Given a choice between drinking from the toilet and dying of thirst, what else would I do?

No, I couldn't because both toilets on our boat use salt water. However, if they used fresh water I probably could. (I'm not ready to die yet!)

I could but I wouldn't. They're pretty nasty, maybe not nasty enough to make you sick but nasty enough.
