Do you always finish books you start reading?

When you start reading a book, do you always finish it? Or are you the type of reader who wants the book to grab their attention quickly, otherwise it will be put down and not read? I'm mostly referring to novels.

Usually, but a few times I've given up on one that I wasn't enjoying. This happens more often if the writing is very dense or hard to read. If it's a lot of effort, and I'm not getting much out of it, I start asking myself why I'm continuing. But, I have completed some books that weren't very good, but were easy to read.

Of course I try to finish every book I start. It's rare when I don't succeed.

Usually. I generally have a pretty good idea of whether it's likely I'll enjoy a book before I start it... I just try the ones that I think will suck. Once in a while I do give up on a book before I finish it... if I give up it's usually earlier rather than later. And I usually don't try again.

I sometimes try to, but it's very rare that I read a book cover to cover. Most of the time, I'll just read parts of the book that interest me the most.

Sometimes I don't finish one because it moves too slowly or doesn't grab my attention enough.

I always try my hardest to finish a book. There are only 3 books I stopped partway through:
The Silmarillion - J. R. R. Tolkien (I tried to read it 3 times, never could; don't care anymore)
Time's Arrow - Martin Amis (had a great premise, but was pretty confusing at the time; want to try again someday)
The Name of the Rose - Umberto Eco (I loved Foucault's Pendulum, so I know I can read this. I was just bored by the extensive history and descriptions. WILL get back to it)

A romantic novel...I always finish. Other books such as medical or political, I read, put down, read, put down. I really enjoy Biblical, historical reading.

Most often, I finish whatever I start reading. There was a book not long ago that I never finished reading, though. I was really into it for a while, but it was way too easy to figure out what was going to happen. I became bored with it. Also, I usually read books fairly quickly. If I'm really into it, I'll finish it in a couple of days. However, I'm reading Angels and Demons now. I like it, but it's been almost 3 weeks since I started reading it and I'm still only halfway through it. I don't know what's up with that. I guess I just haven't been in much of a reading mood.

Shoot, I can't even finish a sentence.

Mostly novels, I don't read. If I do, it better be darn good or I won't even start it.

That was one of my record readings. Angels and Demons I finished in 5 days.

When I first started reading it, I figured I would finish it pretty quickly. I really like it. But, with everything going on in my life, I just haven't been in the mood to sit and read. Any down time I get is spent sleeping. Yay for sleep!

I know the kind of books that I like, and its rare that I read outside those genres, so tis rare that I would start a book and not finish it.

Yes I try....... 99% of the time, the back cover is enough to draw me in (I am a suspense/thriller reader) James Patterson, Lee Childs, MIchael Connelly, Harlan Coben, John Lescroart, David Baldacci etc etc...... But I do remember starting a a couple of books and finding they didnt "Grab" me.... usually its because I have another book that I want to start

There have been only a couple of books I couldn't force myself to finish. One was The Wings of the Dove. The punctuation was just horrid. I don't what he was smoking when he wrote that. I can read everything else of his so far. And a biography of Emily Dickinson. It was THE worst biography I have read in all my life. I love a good biography, this one lacked facts and proof and was only crazy insane speculation.

Oh, and I would LOVE to read Sophie's Choice completely but I never get past the middle.

I will read at least 50 pages before deciding whether I like it or not... I try to finish what I start, but if it's not interesting, then it literally becomes painful for me to continue.

I do that too... If I'm really into a book, I can plow through it in about two days. I'll stay up late reading it, spend every spare moment reading. It's almost like I become part of the book and I just can't put it down. I've always been a fast reader.

Almost always. Very rarely, I'll start a book and at some point when I should pick it up and continue, I decide to start reading something else instead. There are books that I've read about the first five pages before giving up on it and books that I've read two thirds of and didn't bother finishing and everything in between. Some books I'll eventually get around to finishing. Those are always authors that I really like, I just put them aside for a couple of months and finish them later.

If I don't finish a book, or if I take a long break from it, rest assured that I'll consider it a "bad book".

I don't read a lot of novels, they mostly bore me or I just think they're crap. I used to read them pretty much exclusively.

Just about. In the past 10 years, I have probably finished all but about 5 of the books that I started (and I've finished well over 100). This is the reading I do in my free time, though, not academic reading.

Sometimes I just don't finish books I start. Usually I'm reading more than one book at once, and if there's a book I just can't seem to get into I just neglect that one and read other ones for awhile, until eventually I put the boring book back onto the shelf. I usually try again in a couple months though, because I just hate not reading a book that I've started.

I once starting reading a book called "Life before Life", it was peoples account of being born and their reluctance to leave the womb and come into the world. It eventually got me so depressed that I quit reading it. There was only one other occasion where I realized a booked sucked close to the end and did not finish it.

I give all books a honest tryout, but if the book isn't holding my attention and making me want to continue by the time I'm a quarter to a third of the way through, I give up on it and move to another book.
