| Jody | posted 9-Feb-2007 10:31am I've heard of some elderly people who were not in full health succumb unexpectedly to what they normally might have survived after the loss of their spouse. |
| romkey | posted 9-Feb-2007 12:18pm You don't really want me to be literal here, so...
You don't "die of a broken heart" as a direct result of your heart breaking... but of course if you're really depressed and stop taking care of yourself and lose the will to live, this can lead to sickness and death... |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 9-Feb-2007 1:12pm Yes it is possible for somebody to die of a broken heart |
| mandy | posted 9-Feb-2007 1:17pm Yes. |
| Iseult | posted 9-Feb-2007 1:23pm No. Although I don't know all that much about medicine (not being a doctor and all), I think that broken heart can make lose will to live and that can have an effect. |
| filiasan | posted 9-Feb-2007 3:21pm It can make one lose the will to live, which in turn can make a person go down that road. |
| Enigma | posted 9-Feb-2007 3:44pm It happens in romance novels. I think a "broken heart" might turn into depression and a broken spirit. Death from depression unaided? I don't know enough about that. |

| Zang | posted 9-Feb-2007 8:12pm Yeah, I think so. Particularly if you break it open with a big axe. |
| Amanda | posted 9-Feb-2007 9:42pm Of course. If you don't think it's possible, just watch Where The Red Fern Grows. |

| gambler | posted 11-Feb-2007 5:39pm I am not sure?....... maybe, if your partner dies and you get so depressed you stop taking care of yourself and commit suicide- I guess in that way |
| gambler | (reply to Amanda) posted 11-Feb-2007 5:40pm Or the "Notebook" |
| Amanda | (reply to gambler) posted 11-Feb-2007 6:34pm I don't know how I forgot about that one. I loved that movie. It's my all time favorite love story! |
| hypersky | posted 13-Feb-2007 9:29am I think so. Your immune system crashes when you go through a major heartbreak, and it can have very real physical effects. This one woman I know of was physically fit, had a medical check-up annually and, despite being a smoker, always had a clean bill of health. When her only daughter died in a car crash, she went into a depression. She died of cancer almost a year to the day after her daughter. That to me says that there is a very real connection between your psyche and your physical being. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 18-Feb-2007 10:56am Nope, unless they commit suicide, or just give up on living. Not directly though if I'm reading this right. |
