Something comforting for when it gets tough. Could be a stuffed animal, a favorite book, a CD... whatever works for you.

When in doubt throw away...though, of course, keep the things that are not replacable, like photos.
While I have your ear...make sure you have FUN in college. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise...and study WHATEVER is fun to you...do that and everything will fall into place.

I go to a local community college, but my advice is:
A diary and 10 color pen, Fun hobby stuff to share with you new friends, a disk of bookmarks, a stuffed animal, some music from your younger years in case you ever need an afternoon to remember your roots, a flower vase, homemade jam from a relative, stuff found at the beach, a diverse spiritual or poetry book, little tidbits like incense, old perfumes, and things. You won't have much room so pack a box of intriguing history with as much meaning as possible. Also expect to escape on a weekend, so pack for an overnight camping/hiking trip or a trip to the big cities highlife.

and a selection of postcards to thank your parents, and tell them what a great time your having. Otherwise, that ATM card might not mean so much.

drat...i've most of those things already...but i -am- -very- liking the idea ofgiving myself an entire box for memory objects...mmm... i won't need the ATM b/c my college id is like that already but the thanking postcards are a fab-o idey...

I would say take something that is personal, that is yours alone for those moments when everything seems to be changing so fast or there's so much pressure that you want some time alone with something comforting, and something else that is fun to share. Maybe a stuffed animal, a book of poetry, a pair of rollerblades, a journal, a favorite game, a really beautiful bong, a prayer book... whatever floats your boat. Everything else you need can be begged, borrowed, or stolen. Good Luck!!

I'm with Pommy on taking whatever classes seem fun at the time. I never liked the "do what you're good at," I say fudge that! "Do what you find fun, and you'll get good at it in no time!" Most people I know went into college liking one thing- often totally defining themselves in relationship to that interest, then on an off chance took some class totally unrelated and ended up going into that new field in grad school.

jettison as much as possible linking yourself to your old life. this is a new experience, and while you should be informed by your past, you should take the opportunity to truly re-create and re-invent yourself.

A diary, whether it's on paper or computer or whatever. It's a great place to sort things out and keep track of your changing life, and it's wonderful to look back on years later.

Something that can make you comfortable in trying times, like a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, book, CD, etc. If you haven't realized it already, it becomes pretty clear in college how much you are your own responsibility and something that can lift you up is nice to have around.

You really ought to. Find one with the baddest fangs, perhaps shreds of stuffed heart in it's hands, one that sends the neighbor kids screaming, but make sure you always give it a warm kiss goodnight. If you can do that, you'll make it through college just fine.

or a wooden doll with many hooks, wires, and clips hanging off of it?

or a rather LARGE battle ax?

or... hehe... well... i'll tell you what else if those things are up to par :)

jaff- does she know you have that picture? i like the rubber things, i know it would mean something cosmic to kristal, but you're my favorite here so far, so maybe she can meet you on one level and me on something a lot more innocent. I have a whole collection of toys. I just made a survey to list them all Essay: What toys do you own. It cheered me up to get them out.

Every time you move, throw away half of your stuff.
Jasmine
posted 25-Aug-1999 2:17am
That's right. If you throw away 90% of it, you'll regret it when you try to rebuild your record collection. Actually I am down to one box of material I call my jettison box in case I move. Most everthing else is a keepsake or a tool I've proven over the years I will always need. I try to get rid of jewelry, books, or anything else the moment I realize I won't be needing them. It makes my life much more manageable. I keep an out basket next to my door, for when I go visiting friends or thrift stores.

Your parents' credit card and a box of pipe screens. You can make many friends in college with just the words, "hey I've got a new screen if you need one..."
