| Halo | posted 6-Aug-1999 4:16pm Lots and lots at lots of ramen soup...It only costs 17cents a pack. |
| Pomeranian | posted 6-Aug-1999 6:10pm When in doubt throw away...though, of course, keep the things that are not replacable, like photos. While I have your ear...make sure you have FUN in college. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise...and study WHATEVER is fun to you...do that and everything will fall into place. |
| pandora | posted 6-Aug-1999 7:05pm The best thing to take to college...maybe an open mind and lots of party money. |

| kirst | posted 6-Aug-1999 11:35pm Music! |
| Jasmine | posted 7-Aug-1999 12:32am I go to a local community college, but my advice is: A diary and 10 color pen, Fun hobby stuff to share with you new friends, a disk of bookmarks, a stuffed animal, some music from your younger years in case you ever need an afternoon to remember your roots, a flower vase, homemade jam from a relative, stuff found at the beach, a diverse spiritual or poetry book, little tidbits like incense, old perfumes, and things. You won't have much room so pack a box of intriguing history with as much meaning as possible. Also expect to escape on a weekend, so pack for an overnight camping/hiking trip or a trip to the big cities highlife. |
| fooyun | posted 7-Aug-1999 12:52am Your brain. And an ATM card. |
| Jasmine | posted 7-Aug-1999 1:10am and a selection of postcards to thank your parents, and tell them what a great time your having. Otherwise, that ATM card might not mean so much. |
| jaff | posted 7-Aug-1999 1:46am drat...i've most of those things already...but i -am- -very- liking the idea ofgiving myself an entire box for memory objects...mmm... i won't need the ATM b/c my college id is like that already but the thanking postcards are a fab-o idey... Pomeranian: 's wot bug bio is for ;) |
| mandy | posted 7-Aug-1999 2:04am and kiss your parents a lot before you go...especially if they have worked and toiled for years to make college possible for you. If you are going on your own merit, kiss yourself! :) |

| jaff | posted 7-Aug-1999 5:28am ooooo.......GREAT idea!!! *snatches a mirror and gives into a fit of Narcissism long enough to give herself a couple of healthy smooches* ;) 'm going on a series of academic-based scholarships ~~Jasmine...wot'z the matter w/ what miyk said? |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 7-Aug-1999 6:38am a fresh start, a full tank, your mind, heart, body, & soul, dreams, a guidance system, an expectation of having every aspect of your life synergized, the will to achieve, a desire to help others, and a desire to learn. |
| bill | posted 7-Aug-1999 6:51am books, TV, computer - stuff to relieve boredom. |
| Jasmine | posted 7-Aug-1999 6:54am xoxoxooxoxxxoxxoxo That's exactly right, us angels kiss in the mirror. I was wondering when you'd show your face. Nothing ever, but i'll let him field the hitler, land baron, and political ideology questions. |

| Kristal_Rose | posted 7-Aug-1999 8:08am jaff: As in descent incarnate. Of course. What's your specialty? |
| Gamera | posted 7-Aug-1999 11:37am I would say take something that is personal, that is yours alone for those moments when everything seems to be changing so fast or there's so much pressure that you want some time alone with something comforting, and something else that is fun to share. Maybe a stuffed animal, a book of poetry, a pair of rollerblades, a journal, a favorite game, a really beautiful bong, a prayer book... whatever floats your boat. Everything else you need can be begged, borrowed, or stolen. Good Luck!! |
| Gamera | posted 7-Aug-1999 11:43am I'm with Pommy on taking whatever classes seem fun at the time. I never liked the "do what you're good at," I say fudge that! "Do what you find fun, and you'll get good at it in no time!" Most people I know went into college liking one thing- often totally defining themselves in relationship to that interest, then on an off chance took some class totally unrelated and ended up going into that new field in grad school. |
| jaff | posted 7-Aug-1999 8:53pm quite simple, really... i'm the Avatar of Nothing |
| anonymous | posted 8-Aug-1999 7:39am jettison as much as possible linking yourself to your old life. this is a new experience, and while you should be informed by your past, you should take the opportunity to truly re-create and re-invent yourself. |
| msgman | posted 8-Aug-1999 8:41am Take your mind. Leave behind your prejudices. |
| gilly | posted 8-Aug-1999 9:39am A diary, whether it's on paper or computer or whatever. It's a great place to sort things out and keep track of your changing life, and it's wonderful to look back on years later. |
| jonathan | posted 8-Aug-1999 11:16am Something that can make you comfortable in trying times, like a favorite blanket, stuffed animal, book, CD, etc. If you haven't realized it already, it becomes pretty clear in college how much you are your own responsibility and something that can lift you up is nice to have around. |
| bluebird1974 | posted 8-Aug-1999 2:42pm I hate essays |
| jaff | posted 8-Aug-1999 3:19pm ooooooh, yes... my new journal...t'anx!! :) 'n 've packed my fuzzy blanky for sure already... |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 8-Aug-1999 7:34pm You really ought to. Find one with the baddest fangs, perhaps shreds of stuffed heart in it's hands, one that sends the neighbor kids screaming, but make sure you always give it a warm kiss goodnight. If you can do that, you'll make it through college just fine. |
| Jasmine | posted 9-Aug-1999 1:01am i have a siberian tiger named 'Furgus'. |

| jaff | posted 9-Aug-1999 9:40pm what about a copy of Angelo's "the creation of adam" with a speech balloon in which the phrase "pull my finger" floats? or a wooden doll with many hooks, wires, and clips hanging off of it? or a rather LARGE battle ax? or... hehe... well... i'll tell you what else if those things are up to par :) |
| jaff | posted 9-Aug-1999 9:43pm agh...meant aren't |
| Kristal_Rose | posted 9-Aug-1999 10:18pm It's a good start. |
| jaff | posted 9-Aug-1999 11:09pm only a start? :( hm... let me recall what i've packed and see if i can't catalog a few more things others think oddities.... runes, tarot cards, a nude portrait of my older sister... about 50 rubber turtles/lizards/frogs... you know... you're right... *sigh* it is just a start... 'm so going to have to get wierder this year.... |
| Jasmine | posted 10-Aug-1999 1:01am jaff- does she know you have that picture? i like the rubber things, i know it would mean something cosmic to kristal, but you're my favorite here so far, so maybe she can meet you on one level and me on something a lot more innocent. I have a whole collection of toys. I just made a survey to list them all Essay: What toys do you own. It cheered me up to get them out. |

| jaff | posted 13-Aug-1999 1:00pm Jazz//~~> come again? |
| Jasmine | posted 13-Aug-1999 3:30pm He had just announced his band, which i happen to know is *hIP*HOp*. I fell in love with tree kangaroos when i found them on the front leaf of an encyclopedia at age 5. |

| Guthrie | posted 23-Aug-1999 5:01am Take as little as possible. You'll be amazed how little you actually need. I overpacked seriously and hardly used any of the stuff. |
| drdt | posted 24-Aug-1999 4:45pm Every time you move, throw away half of your stuff. |
| Jasmine | posted 25-Aug-1999 2:17am That's right. If you throw away 90% of it, you'll regret it when you try to rebuild your record collection. Actually I am down to one box of material I call my jettison box in case I move. Most everthing else is a keepsake or a tool I've proven over the years I will always need. I try to get rid of jewelry, books, or anything else the moment I realize I won't be needing them. It makes my life much more manageable. I keep an out basket next to my door, for when I go visiting friends or thrift stores. |

| ILJ | posted 19-Nov-1999 4:48pm Your parents' credit card and a box of pipe screens. You can make many friends in college with just the words, "hey I've got a new screen if you need one..." |
| they | posted 19-Nov-1999 5:31pm ILJ: that's what the screens in the sink faucets are for. |
| Mariah | posted 19-Nov-1999 6:33pm they: I never thought of that! Cool! |
| they | posted 20-Nov-1999 9:19am jen: I started thinking about that later. |
