| Galomorro | posted 19-Jan-2007 11:32am Other. It is NOT that I think a job may be "beneath me" -- it may be a perfectly good job for some other people and I wouldn't think of belittling them for having such a job. My main concern is that it be something I can do, and do well, and not feel unduly uncomfortable. It has nothing to do with the pay nor that it is a job others might put down as a drudge job, etc. It is whether I feel comfortable with it and it won't put too much of a strain on me -- like I would not want to work in the fast food industry -- not because it is a bad job but because it has so much standing and constantly interacting with other people -- these two things I do not do well. I would not want a job where I had to wear a tie, was restricted in my choice of footwear, or other dress codes. Fortunately all that hassle is finally behind me since I'm newly retired. |
| cerealkiller | posted 19-Jan-2007 1:03pm Farmworker, telemarketer, bill collector and fast food. For the danger factor I never worked in steel mills and refineries when in college like my friends did. The money was very good but people got hurt and killed regularly. |
| LJD | posted 19-Jan-2007 1:06pm I feel any work that is legal or moral, is not beneath me....if it puts bread on the table, that is what counts. Of course, one has to take in account, especially with a family, how much income they need, not want, but what they need to live. |
| mandy | posted 19-Jan-2007 1:10pm I had to think about this a lot while unemployed. I refused to apply to Fast Food. I have no problem working for minimum wage if it is full time. I can always work on the side to make up for low pay. I just took a job as an Alzheimer's/dementia caregiver in a facility here in town. Full time. I will be working and studying to test for certification and be an actual CNA. I didn't even ask how much they were going to pay. The work itself is the reward for me. I don't even consider the task of toileting the residents beneath me, in fact I feel honored to help. I also do caregiving for a gentleman one morning a week privately, which they have left my schedule open to continue doing. I feel I have a career now, a purpose. I am happy. |
| dab | posted 19-Jan-2007 1:40pm Working for the government would be hard, since I think they get their money through immoral means. Though I've been paid from government sources in the past so maybe I'd just close my eyes and take the money. |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 19-Jan-2007 2:04pm I will work part time at some jobs doing housekeeping and I do deserve better like working in an Office filing, typing and computer work and I would love to |
| judgescratch | posted 19-Jan-2007 2:36pm Of course. But I don't know if it's a below me thing or if it's just an apples and oranges thing. |
| bill | posted 19-Jan-2007 2:59pm I'm not in a position where I have to work a job that sucks, so I don't. But, if I was, I would. I have in the past. Though, I hope I don't have to in the future. So, I said "no/other". |
| Jody | posted 19-Jan-2007 3:50pm I've done all kinds of jobs. I've taken care of peoples' children and worked for an institutional food service and cleaned the dead bugs out of peoples' windowsills and scrubbed their grout with a toothbrush and Ajax. I'm not too proud for manual labor, as long as the pay was good. |
| Maarten | posted 19-Jan-2007 4:13pm Sure. |
| Amanda | posted 19-Jan-2007 4:16pm I don't think any job is beneath me, but there are some jobs I'm not interested in doing. I have worked in the food industry before, but I wouldn't do it again. I also wouldn't work for minimum wage, which is only $5.75 here. Or I say I wouldn't. If it came down to it and I couldn't find anything else, I'd do whatever it took to provide for my child. But, at this point, I wouldn't do it. |
| romkey | posted 19-Jan-2007 5:10pm I may not be too good at certain kinds of work, but I'm not too good for any kind of work.
If I chose not to work at a job a minimum wage it would be because it didn't make financial sense to me, not because I was above doing that job. There's a big difference between not doing certain work because you're really good at something else or something else pays better than because the work is "beneath you". |
| cabinfever | posted 19-Jan-2007 5:15pm I will not work for minimum wage because I have more experience than that. Right now I can't work for less than $9/hr because after I pay taxes and the babysitter, I would be paying to work if I was being paid less than that. |
| ausfox | posted 19-Jan-2007 5:48pm I wouldn't work in the fast food industry. I don't really like working in hospitality at all. I don't think it is beneath me, but I waitressed a lot when I was younger and that kind of work is not for me. |
| autumnlight | posted 19-Jan-2007 6:21pm I would never do a job for minimum wage unless I had absolutely no other option. Also I would never wear a crapey uniform. So that pretty much rules out fast food. |
| RainingFeathers | posted 19-Jan-2007 6:27pm I don't think any job is beneath me. There are many jobs I would never do, but that's because I have no interest and/or skill in any of them. |
| RGirl | posted 19-Jan-2007 6:46pm First, I wouldn't work in the fast food industry but not because I think it is beneath me. I tried it and didn't like it. Hated it.
Now, I would like to say no work is beneath me but when I couldn't do nursing anymore and got a low paying job at Walmart I don't know which caused me more grief, functioning at such a low level that I couldn't handle this job or the fact that I had fallen so far from being a nurse specializing in oncology. It had to do with pride. I am contemplating when I go to get a job again some time not telling coworkers that I was a nurse. Maybe then I would feel more comfortable. |
| hypersky | posted 19-Jan-2007 9:35pm I can't see myself in a sales job where I knew the point was to screw the customer, like used car salesman or time share sales. |
| caviartaste | posted 19-Jan-2007 9:39pm no fast food...ever.
and being highly skilled i would expect more than a mediocre or minimum wage |

Well said! That's kinda how I feel about it. I'll do work for free to help people out. I'll be taking care of a neighbors yard this coming summer. They don't live here just come down on the weekends. We always have a good time with them when they are here. I just figured I would help him out so they could enjoy their time here better. |
| icurok | posted 20-Jan-2007 10:37am Sewage workers are beneath me (at least when they're working). |
| Enheduanna | posted 20-Jan-2007 11:00pm There are plenty of jobs that I would feel were below my skill level (and below pretty much anyone's skill level), but if I desperately needed a job and that was all I could find, I would take it. I would think I deserved a better job, and would probably continue trying to find a better one, but in the meantime I would suck it up. I hope I am never in the situation where I have to take a job that isn't interesting, challenging, and mentally stimulating to me, but I don't know what the future will bring. |
| filiasan | posted 21-Jan-2007 12:59am Not that I think a job would be "beneath me", but certainly demeaning. And there are some job I'd never do just because I'm concerned for my own safety. |
| patarnone | posted 21-Jan-2007 7:23pm If I needed a job for money, I would do anything legal. We are talking "legal" here, aren't we? |
| Zang | posted 21-Jan-2007 8:29pm In spite of the fact that I've spent the past several years cleaning up after the mentally ill...
Yeah, I have certain standards. At this point in my life, I would hope that I would never have to deliver things or solicit on the telephone. Minimum wage and fast food both sound extremely unappealing. I don't think I could honestly say that I wouldn't do any of these things if I was desperate enough, but I suppose the question has more to do with what I consider to be "beneath me". Right now, I'm making about $34,000 a year. Anything less than that would be a disappointment. Anything less than $27,000 would make me feel underpaid and exploited. |
| Iseult | posted 22-Jan-2007 4:51pm As long as you pay me enough, I'll do any kind of job. Maybe something that's really dangerous or that I physically can't do, I would skip on those, but I have my price for everything.
I prefer not to work at minimum wage jobs, although at my stage in life they are unavoidable. |
| jettles | posted 23-Jan-2007 3:58pm actually no, i don't think any type of work is beneath me. if i had to do it to live, i would! |
| shorty189 | posted 3-Feb-2007 6:29pm i don't know. fast food.

| Anderz | posted 6-Feb-2007 6:05pm I would work as anything for money; I would never claim benefits just because I thought working in McDonalds was below me! Pathetic! |
| mrmarm | posted 29-May-2007 7:09am Yes I'm currently unemployed but I go to high school and yes I can think of afew jobs beneath me. |
