What is your favorite part about Valentine's Day?

Everyone -- well, almost everyone-- loves Valentine's Day, especially when you've got someone special to celebrate with. What is it that gives you butterflies in your stomach, gives you a perma-grin, and enables you to spend money left and right, even when you don't have money to spend? Why is Valentine's Day such a great day?

VotesAnswer
5The fact that love is amazing, and this night is just one more of many, that allows you to express yourself freely
2The love of an amazing holiday that affords you the opportunity to shower the one you adore with lots of love
2The idea that your place of work will be packed with shoppers, and your paycheck will be a bit bigger this month
2The night that crushes can become more, couples can leap into love, and lovers can grow even closer to one another
1The love of shopping that feeds off the need to buy people things, although the money isn't available
1The fact that expressing your love for someone in public is something that you share with many people on this night, rather than any other day
1The idea that the more money you spend on someone is the more you will receive in turn
1The notion that you'll be getting some great jewelry and/or other surprises that will sparkle and shine

I consider myself a bit of a romantic, but I'm not big on St-Valentine's Day (or Christmas, or New Year's or Mother's Day or Father's Day or Halloween or any other "special occasion" you care to mention.) You don't need a special day to declare your love to someone; just do it whenever you feel like it.

My favorite part is that my wife doesn't go in for Hallmark holidays so I can ignore the whole thing with no fear.

This assumes that everyone likes Valentine's Day. It's not really celebrated much here, it is considered just a commercial holiday. My husband and I will give each other a card, that's about it.

It is really only another day that I will do what I do pretty much everyday, show lots of affection and probably extra. I don't want anything shiny or expensive. I'd rather have something warm and loving, just spend time with the person I love.

Exactly!! That is how I look at it too. I don't need a special day so to speak to buy something for my Woman.

I dislike the consumerism, but it is a nice opportunity to make some expression of love for your significant other.

I don't really have this reaction to Valentine's Day. Don't get me wrong; I like it and all. But I don't get this excited about it. In fact, your description much more accurately describes how I feel about Christmas. Valentine's Day is fun, and I enjoy getting flowers and whatever else my SO gets me. But I often have trouble thinking of really cool gifts for him for Valentine's Day. And we just don't tend to make a big deal out of it.

I had a dream about you last night! There were a bunch of people and we were all at your place and planning to have a big bonfire-type bbq. I was trying to find rugs to put on the ground. I don't remember what you looked like in my dream, although I'm sure it wasn't what you actually look like.

As in buying the leftover VD candy the next day at the supermarket for half off, then for $.50 a bag a few days after that.

I used to dislike Valentine's Day because I was usually single. My friends and I would go out together and man-bash... it was fun. But now when I think of Valentine's Day, I think of my daughter... because that is when she was conceived.

That's funny. I have been known to build some big bonfires. So big in fact that the fire dept. has come. * laughing out loud * I don't have any rugs to put on the ground. I usually always set up logs (log benches) for people to sit on. Then if I needed to add to the fire...

'The night that crushes can become more' than just crushes?
Or maybe, 'The night that crushes can become more' intense?

Try reading it this way: "The night when crushes can become more intense." It's not the night that is crushing. It's the crush you have on someone perhaps turning into something more than a crush.

Valentine's Day is primarily an excuse for heterosexual women in relationships to castigate their partners for failing to live up to whatever level of excess they had imagined appropriate for the occasion.

But it's not just that! It's also an opportunity for heterosexual women who are not in relationships to wallow in self-loathing and sit in front of the TV set with a gallon of ice cream feeling miserable!

Mine is so sweet when she pretends to get excited about the interactions I have here. She will actualy ask, "so how was SC today?" I know she doesn't really care, or the idea makes her nervous talking to internet strangers. When I told her Irene was coming, she kinda freaked but she really liked her after she got here. I don't know how she will react when I tell her I invited a bunch here during Chicagos blues festival this summer... * surprise * * laughing out loud *
