What would be your 'Desert Island Discs'?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/factual/desertislanddi...

Desert Island Discs is an interview programme on BBC Radio 4. First broadcast in 1942, it is one of the longest running programmes in radio history.

Each week, a famous guest is asked to imagine that they have been stranded on a desert island and discusses the eight pieces of music they would want to take with them. A section from each piece of music is played, interspersed by the interview itself which acts as a review of their life and how they might cope on the island.

What would be your eight Desert Island Discs?

let's see, i would have to have a few beatles albums: rubber soul, revolver, sgt. pepper's, abbey road, let it be and the white album. so that leaves two more, hmmmmm. an indigo girls cd(any one would be fine) and cat stevens greatest hits cd. this is quickly off the top of my head, i know i will think of something later that i would want to change out.

I'll take Natasha Spender's picks. ...not that I'm familar with any of them, but I bet she picked some good stuff. If I picked stuff I already liked, I'm sure I'd get sick of it pretty fast. But, perhaps classical music (which I never listen to) might last longer. I'm willing to take the risk.

This is a hard question, I'd really have to put some thought into it. There would be some music by The Doors, Leonardo's Bride and Al Green.

1. "The Robots" by Kraftwerk
2. "The Narrow Way" by Pink Floyd
3. "Red Mask" by Cabaret Voltaire
4. "Thru Metamorphic Rocks" by Tangerine Dream
5. "Spanish Key" by Miles Davis
6. "Before She Changed Your Mind" by George Jones & Melba Montgomery
7. "Convincing People" by Throbbing Gristle
8. "Jenny Ondioline" by Stereolab

The first three were easy. The last three were a lot harder, particularly the last one. "Tango Till They're Sore" by Tom Waits just barely missed the number 8 spot.

In the actual programme, the 8 songs are merely a shortlist and at the end of the interview you have to pick the single song you would take!

For the purposes of this survey, I'll let you take all of them. * wink *

Also, you're allowed to take one book with you. The Complete Works of Shakespeare and the religious book of your choice (Bible, Koran, Bhagavad-Gita, etc) are deemed to be on the island already. Finally, you are allowed one luxury item, which must serve no practical use as far as escaping (i.e not a boat or a cellphone). Again, for the purposes of this survey I didn't want to complicate things so just stuck with the songs.

Check out the link in the explanation. It shows the choices of previous guests. Most will be British people you've probably never heard of, but previous guests have included George Clooney, John Malkovich, Stephen King and Kim Catrall.

I'm assuming that this means single tracks rather than entire albums.

I would take -
Barrel of a Gun - Depeche Mode
The Sea - Morcheeba
Personal Jesus - Marilyn Manson
John the Revelator - Depeche Mode
Home - Depeche Mode
Swan Lake - Tchaichovsky (sp)
Can't Stop - RHCP
Here to Stay - Korn

This sounds like a good show...if it's done well.
As for my picks, I'm just too distracted about the reality of being stranded to consider what music I'd want.

Mozart. It helps clear my mind for unimportant brain babble. Sort of like my life passing before my eyes.
Led Zepplin, Stairway to Heaven, about hopes and dreams and altered realitys.
Grateful Dead, What a Long Strange Trip It's Been, to see about my past and the present.
It wouldn't matter if I were on an island or in the middle of a bustling city. It's all about getting along with yourself and a high strength to live.
