| LJD | posted 4-Jan-2007 8:27pm When cooked properly, the "wild" meats are delicious. I like Venison stew, when seasoned properly. |
| dab | posted 4-Jan-2007 8:33pm Also caribou. |
| Enigma | posted 4-Jan-2007 8:43pm From this list, deer. I've also had bear which is fantastic. I've heard about how great wild turkey is but I've unfortunately never had it. |
| hypersky | posted 4-Jan-2007 9:36pm Deer/moose
Rabbit Wild Goose Wild Duck All good!!! |
| RGirl | posted 4-Jan-2007 9:38pm I may have had deer meat at some point. I'm not positive. |
| Irene007 | posted 4-Jan-2007 10:29pm Wild? Only duck, rabbit deer and moose (got some in the freezer now). I liked them all, I cook them and I know how! I tried some of the others but they weren't wild.... |

> heard about how great wild turkey is but I've unfortunately never > had it. I've had bear and come to think of it, raccoon as well (it was properly prepared and really delicious!). There used to be this wild game dinner held yearly in Vermont that my Dad often participated in (he was the entertainment!) - Hmmm, maybe the turkey was wild too? I always thought that the turkey was there to appease the weaker stomachs who were forced to tag along to the dinner! |
| LindaH | posted 5-Jan-2007 12:00am If I tried any of that, I was too young to remember |
| Zang | posted 5-Jan-2007 12:56am I'd still like to try rabbit meat. I had the liver once and it was excellent.
I've eaten venison sausage. You can't really tell what it is. It's sausage. I've had bear a number of times. Funny that isn't an option. Most of the time people grind it up like hamburger and use it in much the same manner. I've had spaghetti made with ground bear meat, hamburgers...Bear stew...It's a little gamey. Not exactly filet mignon... |
| Zang | Bear meat must be a Canadian thing. I noticed we were the only ones that seemed to notice it missing from the list. |
| Enigma | (reply to Zang) posted 5-Jan-2007 1:00am Maybe it is... I'm telling you I really liked that bear. |
| Zang | (reply to Enigma) posted 5-Jan-2007 1:37am I did a google search on "bear meat" and found a lot of articles about trichinosis. |
| Melf | posted 5-Jan-2007 2:18am Wild duck. Once. |
| FordGuy | posted 5-Jan-2007 8:32am If it swims or flies I don't eat it. I prefer my meat to have mooooooooo'd in its past. |
| bill | posted 5-Jan-2007 8:59am My neighbor's brother cut some meat off a deer he had strung up (mostly skinned, with hooves sticking out in all directions), then handed it to me. That was a couple months ago. We made stew from it. It tasted pretty good. But, we didn't sleep so well the night he handed the meat to us. There was an odd smell that was hard to forget. |
| judgescratch | posted 5-Jan-2007 9:38am Squirrel, rabbit, venison. |
| Iseult | posted 5-Jan-2007 10:34am My mum made rabbit, but I couldn't make myself eat it.
Raccoon? Who'd eat a raccoon? Those things are dirty. |
| mandy | posted 5-Jan-2007 11:06am The ones I checked plus...mountain lion, bear, elk, antelope, buffalo, ostrich, and rocky mountain oysters |
| NikkiLovesDustin | posted 5-Jan-2007 3:09pm I'm not a big meat eater though I've tried alot of meat...I like most of it but my favorite would have to be deer jerky |
| Maarten | posted 5-Jan-2007 4:25pm Deer, quail, pheasant, rabbit, alligator, wild duck and wild hog. |
| JessicaWoman99 | posted 5-Jan-2007 9:48pm Making me sick here you cannibals who eat others |

Yuck" cannibals |
| cabinfever | posted 6-Jan-2007 1:05am Why are deer and moose clumped into one choice? I've had deer, but not moose. Not a fan of deer... very gamey. Rabbit tastes like chicken. I've had alligator meat in chili before, and it was good. The goose was smoked and very salty. In the 'other' category, I've had elk, bear, buffalo, antelope and shark before. All were very good. Right now I have about thirty pounds of elk burger in my freezer. Elk makes a great lean burger.
What is a field rat? |
| Enigma | (reply to JessicaWoman99) posted 6-Jan-2007 1:27am > Making me sick here you cannibals who eat others
Jessica... you don't eat meat at all? |
| RGirl | (reply to cabinfever) posted 6-Jan-2007 1:55am i've tasted shark before. It was good. That was when I ate meat. |
| ROCKMAN | posted 6-Jan-2007 8:07am I have had all of those except for:
Field rat Wild hog and woodchuck. I have also had bear, elk, caribou(sp?). I eat buffalo all the time but its not wild. I know a guy who raises them. I have two freezers full of dear, buffalo, elk, moose and of course beef. |

| cabinfever | (reply to RGirl) posted 6-Jan-2007 12:51pm Yeah, but now that I know more about endangered species, I won't eat shark again. This was back in high school, before I really knew anything. |
| cabinfever | (reply to ROCKMAN) posted 6-Jan-2007 12:54pm The buffalo I had was a steak. A bit of gristle in it, but it sure was good. I really like elk... I like that it doesn't stink up the kitchen when you cook it like deer does. |

| LindaH | posted 6-Jan-2007 8:21pm When I think of "wild game" I don't think of food. |
| Enigma | (reply to JessicaWoman99) posted 7-Jan-2007 12:22am But you do know how those hamburgers, turkey burgers and steaks end up on your dinner plate don't you.....? |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to cabinfever) posted 7-Jan-2007 7:49am Well I do almost all my meat cooking outside so I have never noticed that. I just smell good ole grill and/or smoker. I have the steaks sometimes too and your right on them. I usually stick to beef when I'm doing steaks. |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to LindaH) posted 7-Jan-2007 7:51am > When I think of "wild game" I don't

| they | posted 7-Jan-2007 9:01am none |
| they | (reply to bill) posted 7-Jan-2007 9:11am The smell of meat... ick.
For some reason, even though I'm the minority in my way of thinking... it still surprises me (and disturbs me) that other people don't carry around the same amount of guilt that I do about animals. It's silly I guess.. because I know that I'm ultra sensitive about it (I call it my curse).. Sometimes I feel like maybe I carry around extra guilt about the death of that deer or any of this wild game we're talking about.. just to make up for everyone else in the world who feels none... People must find it strange that I do eat meat. I like some of it--- as long as it doesn't just taste like MEAT... like a steak, or a plain burger or hunk of chicken. I'm such a hypocrite |
| LindaH | (reply to ROCKMAN) posted 7-Jan-2007 10:18am |
| bill | (reply to they) posted 7-Jan-2007 11:31am We got a big chunk of meat from that same deer for romkey, and he cooked it near Xmas, but he has trouble eating it... I'm not that into steak either... If the deer population is not controlled, it does lead to problems. They will destroy things, like trees (scraping the bark off). Also, the tick population explodes, so more Lime disease and suffering for pets that go out. Even for the deer, over winter there isn't that much food. So, if the population is high, many deer starve to death. We do have a place in the food chain. Certainly my cats don't have any hesitation with eating meat. We gave them some of the deer, even raw, and they loved it. Their kill rate for mice and other small rodents has been very high at times here. I'm not entirely OK with it, but I can see where there is a certain natural order of things. |
| JessicaWoman99 | (reply to Enigma) posted 7-Jan-2007 2:34pm > But you do know how those hamburgers, turkey burgers and steaks end
> up on your dinner plate don't you.....? Yes and I do not even think about because I would become a vegetarian, and I do eat vegetarian at times and I have had friends who are vegetarian and eat no meat, but yes pork chops just bought some of those and eggs that we use come from these chickens that are raised and bred on farms, and growing up back home in Connecticut how I remember so well my family had chickens in this chicken coop outside, we went out and got our eggs from the chickens that we had back then plus we had dogs and cats and picked strawberries in the field behind our home back East in Connecticut and yes apples as well |

I love it too. |
| thecomic22 | (reply to they) posted 7-Jan-2007 4:37pm man does he got a brother? |
| RGirl | (reply to they) posted 8-Jan-2007 1:46am I finally decided to stop eating meat for this reason. I made the decision for myself. I know I can get the nutrition I need without killing an animal. I consider myself on the same par as all the other animals and don't feel I have the right to take their life if I don't need to. As I said, it is my decision for me. I can't make anyone else think or feel or do what I do. Now the smell of raw meat makes my stomach lurch. But I did enjoy eating meat when I did. I loved steak and turkey legs especially. |
| ROCKMAN | (reply to LindaH) posted 8-Jan-2007 4:41am That's what I thought! |
| autumnlight | posted 8-Jan-2007 7:42pm I'm happy to say I've never had any of them. |
| Amanda | posted 8-Jan-2007 9:21pm I've had all of the listed ones except for opossum, field rat, and raccoon. I'm not going into the tastes of all of them. I will say my favorite is deer. |
| ausfox | posted 9-Jan-2007 5:46am I've had deer, quail and duck. I love duck, like quail, but find deer a bit rich. I also just had kangaroo spring rolls recently. Not bad! |
| Enheduanna | posted 9-Jan-2007 4:26pm Deer, quail, and rabbit. Deer is pretty gamey and meaty tasting, and I only like it in small doses. Quail and rabbit taste a lot like chicken. I've had goose and duck, but I don't think they were wild. |
| cloudhugger | posted 10-Jan-2007 12:30am Rabit was an awful experience. But I ate it to be polite, my friend went through alot of trouble to cook it for me. Dry and gamey. I've had turtle. gamey and tough. Wild duck, old and tough, dry yet greasy. Wild turkey was good. Deer, I like, moose I love. Buffulo is my first choice. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to mandy) posted 10-Jan-2007 12:35am > The ones I checked plus...mountain lion, bear,

| cloudhugger | (reply to FordGuy) posted 10-Jan-2007 12:36am What!? You don't like a litlle Wild Turkey? |
| FordGuy | (reply to cloudhugger) posted 10-Jan-2007 10:18am Sure I do - as long as it comes in a bottle, and is 90 proof. |
| cloudhugger | (reply to FordGuy) posted 10-Jan-2007 10:21am Indeed. I remember bellying up to some bar a time ago and had some Wild Turkey with a friend of mine. It was mighty fine. |
| patarnone | posted 15-Jan-2007 6:35pm I've had venison, but the rabbit was domestic, not wild. The best Swiss Steak I ever had was Elk Swiss Steak. |
| darkshadowsseeker | posted 6-Jun-2007 3:48am I've had deer, rattlesnake, pheasant, quail, & alligator (ground gator tail burger). I've also had rabbit, but that was domestic from a supermarket. The venison was good, a lot leaner than beef. Rattlesnake was okay, Pheasant & quail tasted pretty similar to me. The alligator burger tasted like a cross between chicken & fish. |
