This was way way back when I was about 10 years old or so. I was at my grandparents house (On my mother's side) and she made me watch Sesame Street with my grandparents, herself, older sister (10 years older) and my mother's boyfriend. My mother told my grandpa that it was my favorite show, and I tried to tell her that it is not my favorite show, and I stopped watching it about a year in a half ago, but she did not believe me. I did not want to argue with her about it, and I wanted to watch something else such as a cartoon, or a game show, and she would not even let me do that. Therefore, I got stuck watching the whole thing with the family.

When I was 18 My mom "borrowed" some of my money from my savings account without telling me. I knew this because when I went to withdraw the little money I had, it said that I had insufficient funds. While on the way to a festival, with my best friend in the back seat of our car, I questioned my Mom about the money. Well, to say the least, she let me have it and to this day, I feel she was not justified. It was my money and I worked hard for it.

I can't remember very specifically. But, there was some issue with something my friends had done (something of dubious morals, I'm sure). My dad made me go to their houses and tell them to do something... I forget what and I forget how it turned out. But, just the way he put it all on my to confront my friends sucked.

When they'd be sloppy drunk in public or if they had company.

My Father liked to recount what happened when we were on a 1955 television show back in New York. We lived in Walla Walla, Washington at the time and the name alone got us called for interviews when visiting some tv shows.

My folks chose to be on a show called "Feather Your Nest" because I could be on with them. I was in the 5th grade and as my Mother went around putting a feather on the living room item we wanted to win, my Father and I answered questions "flown" down a wire by this fake feathered bird and into a cage holding the question in its beak. We won a lot of stuff, as my Father is quite a trivia buff.

Anyway, they sent a question down to the cage, and the host said, "Well, Patti, here's one you can answer! What was the name of Christopher Columbus"s 3 ships?"

I rolled my eyes around, looked up at him and said, "The Mayflower?"

The crowd went wild, my Father leaned down and loud enough to be heard answered the question.

If I had been older, I would have been mortified, as it was, I was only embarrassed.

He never let me forget it and repeated the story, like, forever.

The first? My mother forgot to pick me up at my first Brownie meeting when I was about 5 or 6 and the ladies couldn't reach her on the phone. They were saying bad about her in front of me. They wanted to go home but they could leave me. By the time my mother arrived I hated her with a deep passion & I realized this is not some one I can depend on. That's the day I grew up too soon.

Another equally humiliating event was when my dad had passed out on the front lawn. The next morning he was trying to make to the house but kept falling. I locked the door & didn't answer it when he wanted in. We lived in a suburb with kids who went to my school. I didn't want to leave the house ever again.

To the extent that my parents embarrassed me when I was a kid, I think they did it simply by existing. They didn't tend to do particularly embarrassing things to me.

OK, I recall. In high school, friends would come over to see me, and if my mom didn't like them, she would be rude, then slam the door in their face. My sister and I decided after a few yesars of that, we wouldn't apologize for her anymore.

Probably their mere existence was the most mortifying thing when I was about 13.

I do fudge those memories. They were bad, but I don't think much about my childhood problems unless I'm.......answering surveys or something. I gave a talk once to some psychology students about growing up with alcoholic parents. That made a big difference, sort of going full circle, giving them a real taste of what the kids go through, what they are thinking, why they do certain things, being part of the solution.

If it makes you feel any better my dad drove into the neighbors mail box knocking it right out of the ground. He also passed out in the front yard for all the other parents to see as they left for work. The anger I felt was dangerous.
