Which of these statements best describe your feelings about cell phones?

Cell phones have grown from an accessory to a necessity... What are your feelings about them? How do people function without cell phones?

VotesAnswer
19Make life easier-you can be on-the-go, and not worry about missing important information. If you're at work, and you need to step out for the afternoon, or a few hours here and there, you can still be contacted with great ease.
18Give parents and children added security. If something happens (change in night plans, late to pick up, car accident, rape, etc) parents and children can communicate with each other, and problems can be fixed faster and safer.
14cell phones aren't safe for people driving, and so new laws had to be developed to maintain safety-no cell while driving
13Help you stay connected to the outside world. They provide you with a whole new way to keep your community (friends and family) connected.
13Cause disruptions in life: A nearby personal conversation becomes an inappropriate public one because the person next to you can't help but talk loudly into their phone.
7People can reach you anytime, day or night... You have to turn the ringer off at night, just to get some sleep.
6More money is spent on buying and upgrading for the lateset cell phone and equipment
5Households are switching to cell phones instead of the run-of-the-mill house phone, so contact is easier. In the long run, you're less likely to receive a call back when needed.
5New technology like hands free and blue tooth have been developed to eliminate driving issues
4people can't imagine a healthy life without cell phones as they've taken over our communication and in some cases, entertainment worlds
2If your phone breaks, you're personal info is safe because the SIM card eliminated past cell problems. Your phonebook, mp3 player, camera, internet access is safe, so you don't have to worry!
2The initial question of "how are you" has become "where are you"- less personal?
1Eliminate personal contact even moreso that the interent and emailing did..can't you just write a letter or sign a card and send it in the mail?

I think for some people it is very helpful, businesspeople etc. It seems to be a good way for parents to keep in touch with their children. On the other hand it is a mighty distraction I find. People also expect to be able to get a hold of you 24-7. Kids abuse them way too much too, using the texting in class, talking at 2am because their parents don't know they're on the phone. There's good and bad to everything.

They're a tool. Like any other tool, cell phones have positives and negatives. They can be used responsibly or they can be used irresponsibly.

I rarely use my cell phone and I function quite well, thank you.

(and who the hell sleeps with their cell phone by the bed, anyway??)

My cell phone is used exclusively for info giving and emergencies. Don't talk on any phone, hands free even, when driving please...thank you.

I clicked off about half of these.

I no longer have a land line, because the cell is cheaper. I also like being able to be anywhere and Caleb having a way to get in touch with me. They make life easier, as I don't have to worry if I'm going to miss a call, have car trouble, something happens and someone needs to get in touch with me, etc.

I'm guilty of that. The main reason I do is because my grandma is in a nursing home and if something happens I want them to be able to get in touch with me. Also, if Caleb's not with me, my cell is never out of earshot.

People can reach you anytime, day or night. - That's why I have it off most of the time. That thought scares me just as much as I find it convenient when I'm waiting for someone to get in contact with me.

Causes disruptions in life. As in people insisting on chatting loudly about their personal lives on buses, etc. I would never have one and have absolutely no use for phones at all myself; I would prefer to communicate mostly via email or instant messenger, and I feel that all phones are invasive, not just cells. With email you can answer when it is convenient for YOU. I will admit, however, that in some cases, like for emergencies and for people who have kids, cells are a good idea.

I think cell phones are a necessity today, because now we're "hooked". When I was growing up, we didn't have them, and we got by without them. It's what you get used to... They're great for emergencies, keeping track of the children.

I am guilty too. Mine goes on the night stand next to the bed. My Woman has hers on the night stand on her side of the bed too. That is also where the chargers are. Neither one of us ever tur our phones off unless it is required in a certain place, like court or something.

None of the options fit perfectly really. I chose that it makes life easier. I have a basic phone and that's all I care about. As long as my family and friends can contact me and I can contact them, I could care less about the bells and whistles of it all. It needs to be affordable and reliable for me.

You know this is a good question, I was kind of "late" on the cellphone thing......... When my company finally insisted I use one, I chose the cheapest phone , what I do is keep the thing in the car and only turn it on when I am on the road, my message even says " Please call me at work or home" as 95% of the time i am at either of these places.
I have grown to like the address/contact section to store numbers which is an asset.

My wife on the other hand is a complete phone phobic, latest ring tones, IM, Bluetooth, etc etc

I switched from landline to cell phone in 1999. I've never had both at the same time. I think around that time it became obvious that a cell phone was basically more economical. I paid maybe $200 for my first phone and I've upgraded to the more fashionable phones every couple of years. The phones are actually getting cheaper. I think the last one was about $40. I only pay $20 a month for the service, it includes a lot of extras. When I used landline only, it cost about $25 for the phone, which was always needing replacement because they build them like crap now days and they're always breaking. I think it was about $45 a month for the service and that didn't include any extras.

With a cell phone you can carry it with you anywhere. You don't get telephone solicitors. I've got all my numbers in memory, so I know who is calling me and I don't have to memorise phone numbers. It's just a lot better all around.

I have never ever been inconvenienced by a loud cell phone talker. I hear loud voices far more often by people who are face to face with each other. Talk about unneccesary.

I don't have a cell phone, but Alice sure needs hers for calls when we're out on the road.

She does bluetooth when driving.
